1 The Rowland Institute at Harvard 100 Edwin H. Land Boulevard 116 Green Street Cambridge, MA Melrose, MA (617) (781) EDUCATION December, 2001 May, 1996 The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Ph.D., Analytical Chemistry, Conformations and Energetics in the Dissociation of Peptide Ions Advisor: Prof. Gary L. Glish Honors: GAANN Fellowship, Hoechst Celanese Fellowship Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville, MO B.S., Chemistry with honors, minor in English, Magna cum Laude Honors: President s Honorary Scholarship ( ) RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 2002-present Postdoctoral Fellow: The Rowland Institute at Harvard Study of intermediate conformations of gas-phase biomolecules with laser-induced fluorescence and mass spectrometry. Current work involves the study of the conformational dynamics of gas-phase double-stranded oligonucleotide anions. Ions are trapped in the quadrupole ion trap and analyzed concurrently with mass spectrometry and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET). The correlation of the fluorescence and mass spectra as a function of temperature assists in the characterization of the conformations adopted by double-stranded oligonucleotide ions during thermal dissociation to single-stranded oligonucleotide ions Graduate Research Assistant: The University of North Carolina Determination of boundary-activated dissociation onsets of peptide ions in the quadrupole ion trap formed by two different ionization techniques, nanoelectrospray ionization and liquid secondary-ion mass spectrometry. Through derivatization of peptides to fix their primary structures and by varying the collisional cooling conditions within the quadrupole ion trap, the persistent relative differences in dissociation onsets provided evidence secondary structural differences of gas-phase peptide ions as a function of the ionization technique used. Study of the effects of using only pulsed heavy gases (Ar, Kr, Xe) in the quadrupole ion trap in the absence of any added buffer gas on the trapping and dissociation efficiency of peptide ions. A relationship between the relative trapping efficiency of peptide ions in heavy gas

2 Page 2 versus He and the relative m/z values of the peptide ions and the gases was established. Study of the structural effects on dissociation patterns of peptides, specifically protonated and sodiated polyproline chains ionized via nanoelectrospray ionization and atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization. Experimental data showing a unique dissociation pattern of protonated polyproline chains was complemented by molecular modeling studies Research Assistant: Northeast Missouri State University Synthesis of novel self-assembled metal colloid monolayers and evaluation of their utility as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrates. Investigation of barium and lead leaching from pottery glazes via flame atomic emission spectrophotometry. TEACHING EXPERIENCE Fall, 2000 and 2001 Instructor: Analytical Methods Instructed undergraduate intermediate analytical chemistry course Fully responsible for creation and delivery of all lectures maintenance of regular office hours creation, administration, and grading of exams assignment of grades Fall, 1997 Teaching Assistant: Electronics Laboratory Supervised graduate level laboratory course Member of a team of teaching assistants responsible for creating and administering oral examinations Teaching Assistant: Analytical Methods Laboratory Instructed two sections each semester of undergraduate quantitative analysis laboratory Responsible for weekly pre-laboratory lectures, maintenance of regular office hours, creation of quizzes, and assignment of grades Teaching Assistant: General Chemistry I and II Laboratory Assisted professor with instruction of two sections each semester of undergraduate general chemistry laboratories Responsible for student supervision and grading of quizzes and exams
