3 Research Facilities Group Leader: DELICHERE Pierre Research equipments dedicated to the characterization of catalytic materials are grouped together in a scientific platform. A group of fifteen persons, mainly engineers, are in charge of this large instrumental park as well as of the development of techniques for the characterization of divided solids especially under reactive conditions. The equipments of this platform are open to the research teams of IRCELYON and carry out work for outside laboratories and industries in the form of collaboration or service agreements. Since 1958, when the CNRS funded the first french laboratory fully dedicated to catalysis, headed by Professor Marcel Prettre, the Institute actively contributed to the development of that field of chemistry, from the preparation and characterization of catalysts, to the overall understanding of catalyzed reactions. Nowadays, IRCELYON is a joint research laboratory of the University Claude Bernard Lyon1 and the CNRS (UMR 5256) and its activities are covering a wide range of research areas, from fundamental investigations, to applied developments in the fields of Energy, Chemistry and the Environment. Addressing scientific, technological and environmental challenges has been made possible by the amazingly complementary skills brought together by our recognized staff. Structured around five research teams, IRCELYON benefits also from a strong technical expertise. This creates a unique research environment challenging new scientific breakthrough, at the frontline of chemistry such as : Conception of catalytic materials (oxides, metallic, MOF, biomimetic ): from design to applications Synergy between catalysis and environmental chemistry (water and air treatments, depollution, trace analysis, understanding of reaction mechanisms, impact assessments ) Deep characterization (including in-situ or operando, analysis of complex media) From model molecules to real feedstocks (heavy oils, lignocellulosic materials, soots ) Fruitful collaborations are engaged with french, european, and international academic groups within the French National Research Agency, european programs, bilateral or international projects We are also in strong interactions with industrial partners to develop project from fundamental to applied research (TRL 1-4). CARE s research activities are at the crossroad of several major societal problems, especially those related to water and air quality. CARE addresses all aspects from basic to applied research, from the characterization of pollutants, their catalytic treatment to their environmental impacts, with a specific attention at he reaction mechanisms and kinetics. The main research topics are focused on: Valorization of bioresources for fuels and chemicals production Eco-efficient refining and petrochemistry processes Conversion of solar energy through photocatalysis Keywords Fuels, Base Chemicals Transition Energy Hydrogen Vector Biomass & Bioressources Inorganic Solid Catalysts Photocatalysis Real Feeds In situ and Operando Techniques Multifunctional Catalysis In situ/operando Raman Cell Reaction Scheme of Guiaiacol Hydrodeoxygenation XRD Local Analysis A Strong expertise has been developed in the group towards the analysis and the characterization of pollutants at trace levels in all phases i.e., aqueous, gaseous and particulate. We also aim at formulating and shaping new catalysts for pollution abatement and to the development of innovative catalytic processes such as photocatalysis, catalytic wet air oxidation, catalysis on thin films and the electrochemical promotion.
