Benedikt Uhl Number of Places 1 Basis for a systematic improvement of modern batteries is a detailed understanding of the processes at the electrode-electrolyte interface. We aim at a molecular scale understanding of the interactions between electrode and electrolyte, and of the electrochemical and electrocatalytic processes occurring during O2 reduction. This will be studied using well defined model systems, by applying a combination Working Areas for of ultrahigh vacuum methods such as UHV-STM and different spectroscopic methods (XPS, UPS, IR, TDS) on the one hand and spectro-electrochemistry methods (CV, DEMS and in situ IR spectroscopy). The work includes the preparation of suitable model systems, their structural and spectroscopic characterization, as well as spectro-electrochemical studies using these well-defined model electrodes. Yuchen Wang Number of Places 1 Our main aim is to unravel the microscopic, molecular scale reaction mechanism of heterogeneously catalysed reactions (gas-solid interface) on the basis of model studies on realistic (powder) catalysts under well-defined reaction conditions. In the present project we are specifically interested in the catalytic performance of gold catalysts (Au nanoparticles supported on various metal oxides) for the (preferential) CO oxidation reaction. Working Areas for Applying kinetic measurements and ex-situ as well as in-situ specthe Interns troscopic characterization techniques (XPS, infrared spectroscopy) it shall be clarified how the catalytic perfomance and the catalyst itself are affected by the reaction conditions, e.g. reaction temperature and reaction atmosphere. From possible correlations it shall further be elucidated which factors are responsible for the observed high activity and selectivity of Au catalysts. - Basic knowledge of heterogeneous catalysis and catalytic processes - First experiences in experimental catalysis research - Experiences with infrared spectroscopy and/or gas chromatography
