1 service offer MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION AND TESTING PLATFORM Materials
2 Materials Characterization and Testing Platform LIST's Materials Characterization and Testing Platform supports all Luxembourg and international companies in its research and innovation projects by: Providing a unique and optimum combination of advanced characterization facilities and mechanical testing to respond to the needs of internal and external researchers and industries, Developing and maintaining leading-edge expertise and methodologies in characterization and mechanical testing. We work: From bulk to surface sample, From the macroscopic to the nanoscopic range, From one-time analysis to quality control or contractual research, For a broad range of industries, R&D actors and research institutions. We are committed to excellence in our professional practices, willing to give the best support to our customers and partners by providing high quality analysis or testing results within a short timeframe. Thus, our platform is engaged in an accreditation process (ISO 17025) that leads it to a continuous improvement spirit. Key clients: Industries, R&D laboratories and institutional research centres in the fields of manufacturing, building, packaging, automotive, aeronautic, cosmetics, and medicine. The Facility focuses on both molecular imaging and identification. A wide range of complementary techniques, TOF-SIMS (Time-Of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) and High-Resolution (HR-MS) Mass spectrometry (Orbitrap), (additionally, MALDI-MS, GC/MS, GPC/ fractionation, LC/MS, FT-IR) are available to optimally chose the right combination of tools to address topics related to the detection or localization of small (bio) molecules, resins or even high molecular weight polymers. The Facility offers on-demand analytical developments in a very wide range of applications. The latter namely include defect analyses, monitoring of production/synthesis processes, reverse engineering, and biological tissue imaging. Access to direct services in / Elemental and Isotopic Analysis The Facility aims to carry out the relevant characterization of the surface and the bulk of materials using dynamic-secondary ion mass spectrometry (D-SIMS) and electron spectroscopies (XPS, AES, UPS). It allows the determination of the elemental composition (from H to U), to provide chemical state information on the detected elements and to trace isotopes with an excellent sensitivity (from ppb up to 100%). The facility addresses problematic areas such as adhesion, surface and interface chemistry, failure analysis, element and isotope tracking, corrosion, segregation or diffusion, among others. Our facility is the only public lab worldwide equipped in SIMS with both a CAMECA NanoSIMS and a CAMECA SC-Ultra. Structure, Morphology and Topography Mechanical Testing and Accelerated Ageing The aim of the Structure, Morphology and Topography Facility is to cover all areas related to structure, morphology and topography. In this respect, the facility owns several instruments (X-Ray Diffractometer, Scanning Electronic Microscope, Atom Force Microscope, 3D profilometer) in order to support the growing research activities relative to inorganic and composite materials, polymers and powders. The Mechanical Testing and Accelerated Ageing Facility is dedicated on one hand to determining mechanical properties of materials, on the other hand to evaluating the long-term effects under expected levels of short-term stress. The equipment available in the facility is: Activities dedicated to fire testing will permit research into material properties in the field of fire behaviour and fire retardant. The use of complementary techniques namely the cone calorimeter, smoke chamber and flammability chamber allows the determination of combustion heat, smoke opacity and toxicity of smoke, burning time and flame propagation velocity. Thermal analysis is a range of advanced techniques for determining the thermophysical properties of materials and characterizing their thermal behaviour. It is an indispensable tool for solving materials-related problems in both research and quality control. The facility addresses a very wide range of applications: structure identification, texture analysis, phase transition, topography, morphology, thickness of coatings, surface roughness, material failure, etc. An impact tester A static universal testing machine Two dynamic universal testing machines A set of climatic, artificial light and salt spray chambers. Our analytical capabilities and skills have already been helpful for the packaging, building, automotive, trains and plane manufactories, polymer industries. Equipment: Cone calorimeter coupled to FTIR Smoke chamber coupled to FTIR Flammability chamber Thanks to the large panel of techniques available in our facility, including Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Dilatometry, Thermogravimetry (TGA) coupled to Mass Spectrometry (MS) and Infrared (IR) spectroscopy for evolved gases analysis, Laserflash (LFA) for thermal diffusivity and conductivity, we are able to characterize, in a large temperature range (from -180 C up to 1550 C), a wide variety of materials such as polymers (thermoplastic, thermoset, elastomers), copolymers, blends and additives (plasticizers, stabilizers, fillers, pigments, etc), metals, metal oxides, metallic salts, alloys, composites, pharmaceuticals, catalyst systems, cays and minerals, lubricants, greases or adhesives.

6 ABOUT LIST The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a mission-driven Research and Technology Organization (RTO) that develops advanced technologies and delivers innovative products and services to industry and society. As a major engine of the diversification and growth of Luxembourg s economy through innovation, LIST supports the deployment of a number of solutions to a wide range of sectors, including energy, IT, telecommunications, environment, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing at national and European level. Thanks to its location in an exceptional collaborative environment, namely the Belval Innovation Campus, LIST accelerates time-to-market by maximizing synergies with different actors, including the University of Luxembourg, the national funding agency and industrial clusters. MRT (Materials Research and Innovation), one of the three departments of LIST, translates cutting-edge research into smart materials to industrial innovation. It focuses on two key enabling technologies: nanotechnologies and advanced materials, and investigates research questions related to transducing materials and actuators, photocatalysis and energy harvesters, transparent electronics and smart nanocomposites, point-of-care and drug delivery, modelling and design of structures and multifunctional composites, bio-based polymers and composites, adhesion and compatibilization of fibres/matrix, process engineering and advanced manufacturing.
