2 We would like to extend an invitation to cattle producers to join us on March 2 for our 38th annual production sale. The Pederson Family The Red Angus breed continues to gain market share as the nation s cowherd continues to rebuild. We certainly are fortunate to have repeat customers that have supported us for the last five decades and our new customers that are trying our program. Our philosophy on raising cattle is staying consistent and selecting for a balanced set of traits. We simply focus on females that are feminine, highly maternal, with outstanding feet and leg structure with level udders. We strive to have these qualities along with cattle that are deep sided, long bodied and plenty of muscle wrapped up in a quiet, easy-to-handle animal. Gary and Sue The bulls and yearling heifers were weaned in late September and early October and will be carcass ultrasounded in late February. A supplement sheet will be provided sale day and on our website ( and Facebook page ( Videos will also be available on our website and our Facebook page. Ralph The heifers have come from the heart of our replacement pen. We have culled anything that we would not use ourselves. Oahe Vet from Mobridge did the pregnancy ultrasound for our bred heifers. Chad, Lisa and Bricelyn We would like to thank our hired man Tim Johnson for his help through the past year. Tim is a valuable asset to our operation and we couldn t get everything done without him. 4 Sale Information DELIVERY: It is our policy to assist in delivery to your ranch or to central locations on major highways within 300 miles. Bulls or bred heifers picked up within three or four days will receive a $50 hauling refund. We will keep the bulls until April 1 at no charge but we will not be responsible for sickness or injury. However, we will keep you informed if anything turns up. We would like to start delivering bulls as soon as weather permits. We re giving a 5% discount on 5 or more bulls to the same ranch and a 10% discount for 10 bulls to the same ranch. HEALTH: All cattle are on a complete vaccination program and are BQA Certified. The bred heifers have been ultrasounded by the Oahe Veterinary Clinic. The open heifers have been Bangs vaccinated and will have had two shots of Fusaguard. Oahe Veterinary Clinic, (605) , is our primary veterinarian and will also be available on sale day. None of the cattle have had creep feed. COMMERCIAL HEIFERS: The commercial heifers have been sorted into three groups and will sell in groups of 10 head with the option to take as many as the buyer would like. There is no delivery on the commercial heifers, but we will assist in coordinating trucking as much as possible. INSPECTION OF CATTLE: Cattle will be available for inspection at any time prior to the sale. BREEDING GUARANTEE: We guarantee all bulls to be breeders although we recommend you have the bull s semen tested a couple of weeks before turn out time. If after two tests a bull is found to be a non-breeder, we will replace the bull or allow credit toward next year s sale. This guarantee is void if there is evidence of improper management in caring for the animal, or the bull s inability to breed is due to sickness or injury which was incurred after being sold. The bull shall be returned by the purchaser or other arrangements made with us. Scrotal measurements and ultra sound data on the bulls will be available on sale day. All bulls are born and raised on this ranch. LIABILITIES: All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The owners assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur. SEMEN INTEREST: Broken Heart Ranch is retaining a 1/3 semen interest in all bulls and selling full possession, full salvage, plus 2/3 semen revenue. This means any semen sold on any of the bulls, Broken Heart will receive 1/3 the selling price per unit. We also reserve the right to collect semen on any of the bulls, for our own use. This semen will be collected at our expense and the buyer s convenience. We are also retaining the right to one in-herd fl ush interest in all females to be collected at the seller s expense and the buyer s convenience. During the 2016 Cattle Industry Convention in San Diego, California, NCBA and the Beef Checkoff recognized Pederson, who serves as her state s BQA specialist at North Dakota State University, with the 2016 BQA Educator of the Year Award. During the presentation, farm broadcaster Russell Nemetz, who served as emcee for the program, outlined how Pederson has enthusiastically worked with beef and dairy producers across North Dakota to help them improve cattle health and overall management to protect beef quality and optimize productivity. Pederson has also served as one of the founders and a driving force behind the national Bovine Emergency Response Plan (BERP). That plan, developed by specialists at several universities, aims to provide training and education for fi rst responders in communities around the country with a goal of ensuring rapid and appropriate response to emergencies involving cattle, such as trailer wrecks on highways. The BERP training helps responders set a plan for contacting local producers and veterinarians to quickly assist in containing cattle at the accident scene and treating or humanely euthanizing injured animals as needed. Pederson has conducted more than 500 BQA certifi cation and educational meetings for beef, dairy, youth and allied industry audiences in North Dakota over the last 16 years. Pederson grew up on her family s ranch in southwestern Colorado and earned her bachelor s and master s degrees from Colorado State University. She and her husband, Chad, and daughter Bricelyn, are part of the family s registered and commercial Red Angus operation, Broken Heart Ranch, at Firesteel, South Dakota.
