Ralph and Helen purchased their fi rst Red Angus female in They began selling bulls through private treaty and at the local auction market in Timber Lake for many years prior before they had their fi rst offi cial cataloged sale forty years ago. We have enjoyed producing Registered Red Angus all our lives and have met many producers and have made some lifelong friends. We are very proud of that fact that our genetics have played a role in commercial programs that are recognized for top selling replacement quality females and steers that push the scales to the limit. Your success is what drives us to select and produce cattle that are exceeding industry average. The Red Angus breed just keeps growing in popularity and doesn t show any indication of slowing any time soon. Heifers are out selling their steer mates and more and more breed associations are using red females for their crossbreeding selections. With the advancement of technology there are numerous tools to help with herd bull selection. Feel free to visit us anytime and we can use our decades of experience to answer questions that will assist you in fi ne tuning your herd. Our philosophy hasn t changed about raising cattle. Staying consistent and selecting for a balanced set of traits. We simply focus on females that are feminine, highly maternal, with outstanding feet and leg structure, with level udders. We strive to have these qualities along with cattle that are deep sided, long bodied and plenty of muscle wrapped up in a quiet and easy to handle package. The bulls and replacement heifers were weaned in mid-september and the bulls will be carcass ultrasounded in late February. A supplement sheet will be available on our website ( and our Facebook Page (Broken Heart Ranch). Videos will also be available on our website and Facebook page. Oahe Vet will be our sale day vet and we plan on having the commercial heifers palpated and the bulls evaluated by them also. We will not have them semen tested due to their young age but we do stand behind them when that time arrives prior to breeding. We always stand behind our cattle except during the heart of lush green grass season while wearing church clothes. We would like to thank our hired man, Tim Johnson for his help through the past years. Tim is a valuable asset to our operation and we couldn t get everything done without him. Nathan Swift has also been part of our crew part time throughout the year. Logan Pederson (Gary and Sue s grandson) has also helped us out during the summer months and he too is an asset in tackling the summer workload. 4 Sale Information DELIVERY: It is our policy to assist in delivery to your ranch or to central locations on major highways within 300 miles. Bulls or bred heifers picked up within three or four days will receive a $50 hauling refund. We will keep the bulls until April 1 at no charge but we will not be responsible for sickness or injury. However, we will keep you informed if anything turns up. We would like to start delivering bulls as soon as weather permits. We re giving a 5% discount on 5 or more bulls to the same ranch and a 10% discount for 10 bulls to the same ranch. HEALTH: All cattle are on a complete vaccination program and are BQA Certifi ed. The open heifers have been Bangs vaccinated and will have had two shots of Fusaguard. Oahe Veterinary Clinic, (605) , is our primary veterinarian and will also be available on sale day. None of the cattle have had creep feed. COMMERCIAL HEIFERS: The commercial heifers have been sorted into three groups and will sell in groups of 10 head with the option to take as many as the buyer would like. There is no delivery on the commercial heifers, but we will assist in coordinating trucking as much as possible. INSPECTION OF CATTLE: Cattle will be available for inspection at any time prior to the sale. BREEDING GUARANTEE: We guarantee all bulls to be breeders although we recommend you have the bull s semen tested a couple of weeks before turn out time. If after two tests a bull is found to be a non-breeder, we will replace the bull or allow credit toward next year s sale. This guarantee is void if there is evidence of improper management in caring for the animal, or the bull s inability to breed is due to sickness or injury which was incurred after being sold. The bull shall be returned by the purchaser or other arrangements made with us. Scrotal measurements and ultra sound data on the bulls will be available on sale day. All bulls are born and raised on this ranch. LIABILITIES: All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The owners assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur. SEMEN INTEREST: Broken Heart Ranch is retaining a 1/3 semen interest in all bulls and selling full possession, full salvage, plus 2/3 semen revenue. This means any semen sold on any of the bulls, Broken Heart will receive 1/3 the selling price per unit. We also reserve the right to collect semen on any of the bulls, for our own use. 5 In Memory In Memory of Gene Webb & Larry Harrison In the past year we said goodbye to a couple of valued customers, Gene Webb of Eagle Butte, South Dakota and Larry Harrison of White River, South Dakota, who supported our program for many years, and became part of our Broken Heart Ranch family. These two gentlemen were always enjoyable to deal with and certainly had the eye of great cattle producers. His dam has an MPPA of 105 and is the type of cow that will be produce future herd bulls. When we took a photo of this bull it was hard just to take one. Every step he took he would show off and pose like a stud. It shouldn t be difficult to find him on sale day. His dam is a beautiful cow that should have been on a halter. She is in the top 1% of the breed for milk and her udder is tight, level and looks like a first calf heifer s rather than an older cows. She has truly earned her 113 MPPA. He is the total package herd bull. 32 Commercial Open Heifers We will have our replacement heifers numbered from 101 through 200 with the high bidder having the option to take a minimum of five or as many of the whole offering as they choose in Lot number sequence. All the heifers are top cuts from our Registered herd and Commercial herd. We have culled any female that we did not feel would be replacement quality. All of these heifers will sell as commercial.
