2 The Pederson Family Front row: (L to R) Helen and Ralph; back row: Lisa, Chad, Bricelyn, Gary and Suzet Welcome to our 34th annual production sale, this is our 50th year in the Red Angus business! How things have changed in the past half century! What an exciting time to be in the cattle business! It is nice to see cattle producers fi nancially rewarded for producing the safest, highest quality beef in the world! Cattle Fax recently reported cow calf producers were in the drivers seat of the beef industry and were forecasting all segments of the industry to have strong prices and a profi table year. It is a simple fact the economic machine in the beef business is the commercial cattle producer. If our commercial producers don t make money on the calves they raise, we don t make money on the bulls we sell. We rely on our customer s feedback to help us make our breeding decisions. We feel by staying in touch with and receiving feed back from our friends and customers we have been able to produce genetics that can benefi t our customers through the ups and downs of the cattle cycle. With this in mind our current goal is to breed and raise effi cient, sound Red Angus cattle with a balanced EPD profi le. We are proud to be raising cattle that fi t the beef industry needs, from pasture to plate! We breed our cattle to be deep bodied, long sided and heavy muscled. Soundness of feet and udders and quiet dispositions are not convenience traits here at Broken Heart Ranch, they are required traits. We cull hard for structure, productivity, effi ciency and disposition. We stand behind our cattle because our reputation depends on how they perform. Some of our customers have utilized our genetics for decades. We Thank You for the confi dence you have shown our program. We are offering one of the most uniform sets of bulls we have raised to perform in your herd. The calves were weaned the end of October. We will carcass ultrasound the bulls in February and a supplement sheet will be available on on our website and sale day that will include carcass data, scrotal circumferences, and updated EPDs. As well, we will be adding videos and color photos of the cattle to the website. After the first eight bulls, the cattle are listed in birth order in the catalog. A sale order will be available the day of the sale. Helen and Ralph The bred heifers come out of our replacements. They were ultrasounded by Dr. Pat Bierman, Mandan Veterinary Clinic last fall and their due dates noted in the foot notes of the sale book. Bricelyn We have sure had a nice winter and we hope that trend continues on sale day and through calving. It seems after the past four or fi ve tough winters that the Good Lord and Mother Nature had a chat and decided those good folks of northern plains have had enough. It s time to give them a break! We thank them and have sure been blessed with our winter thus far! We will be glad to assist you in any way. The cattle can be viewed at the ranch anytime. Stop in and have a cup of coffee with us; we d love to have you. Check our website at for videos, color photos and further information. We look forward to seeing you on March 7th. 10 Predicting Profit The Ranchers Guide to EPDs Cowherd Building Traits Profit starts at Reproduction! Placing selection pressure on traits that will have a direct impact on your marketed product (weaned calves, yearlings, carcasses sold in the meat) can certainly increase your revenue on a per calf basis. However, in order to achieve the higher goal of increased revenue per cow exposed, selection pressure must be placed on cow herd building traits. Profitable reproduction can be boiled down to success in these four Economically Relevant Traits: Calving Ease Direct (CED): The expected progeny difference of calves being born unassisted from two year-old heifers. The Red Angus CED model accounts for contemporary group birth weight differences and calving ease scores. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): The expected progeny difference of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): The expected progeny difference of a given animal's daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Stayability (STAY): The expected progeny difference of a bull's daughters remaining in the herd until at least six years of age. Females that don't stay in the herd that long are losing money, and they also contribute to a higher rate of replacement females that the rancher can t cash crop. 8 Pederson s Broken Heart Ranch Cows Eat Money! That s why Red Angus published the Mature Cow Maintenance Energy EPD (ME EPD), becoming the first beef breed to evaluate the expense side of the ranchers' profit equation. Here are the facts: ME predicts differences in maintenance energy requirements of mature daughters of a bull. Maintenance energy requirements are directly related to feed cost - often producers largest single expense. The lower the ME EPD, the less feed daughters require to maintain body condition. ME can be used to ensure environmental fit, and to estimate additional feed required by increased growth & milk. To receive a FREE 8-page Rancher s Guide to EPDs, contact this breeder or the Red Angus Association of America. With a long standing commitment to better serve this continually changing beef industry, Red Angus has prepared for tomorrow s challenges through New & Improved Genetic Predictions (EPDs). Red Angus has combined databases and subsequent EPD calculations with the American Simmental Association in order to simplify producers use of crossbreeding programs by supplying them with true multi-breed EPDs. This enhancement enables Red Angus to provide reliable EPDs on all animals in the database, regardless of breed composition. Additionally, with the recent changes to carcass value Red Angus has added Carcass Weight and Yield Grade to its arsenal of ERTs. EPDs are the most reliable predictors of an animal s true genetic merit. As the only major beef breed to mandate Total Herd Reporting (THR), Red Angus EPDs have the built in advantage of being calculated from 15 years of complete contemporary group data. EPDs have fast-tracked beef cattle improvement and removed much of the guesswork associated with selecting range bulls. Top 50% Top 25% Ranch Tested. Rancher Trusted. The Drifter calves are easy to find and certainly have a winning look to them. BHR Drifter 151 has more volume and capacity than any bull on test this year and backs it up with his impressive set of EPDs and weaning and yearling ratios of 107 and 109. His Golden Boy dam shows the same easy-keeping style that he does with an MPPA of 101. Lot 7 has Mulberry s sire, Golden Boy and Dakota Copper in his pedigree. He has a ¾ brother BHR Drifter 172.
