2 Helen and Ralph Welcome to our 37th Annual Production Sale. We are certainly excited about the cattle industry and particularly the Red Angus breed. Not only are Red Angus cattle topping the markets across the country, our breed is taking a leading role in rebuilding the nation s cow herd as the favored female. It is certainly hard to believe the changes that the breed and the industry has been through over the past half century. For the last 50 years in the Red Angus business, our ranches focus has been on the herd. We have continually selected for females that are feminine, highly maternal, with outstanding feet, legs, udders and have a quiet disposition. They are deep sided, soft made cattle with plenty of length, muscle and bone. For us these females offer a lot of longevity, fertility, and the ability to raise market-topping steer calves who are efficient, high-gaining cattle in the feed yard and hang high quality carcasses in the packing plant. These combined traits offer a profitable animal to the industry. The yearling bulls and heifers were weaned in late September and early October. The bulls will be carcass ultrasounded in late February. A supplement sheet containing the carcass data will be provided sale day and on our web site (www. pedersonbhr.com). Videos will also be available on our website and on our Facebook page (www. facebook.com/pedersonbhr). The heifers have come out of the heart of our replacement pen. The bred heifers were pregnancy ultrasounded by Dr. Brittany Chaney, Oahe Veterinary Hospital, Mobridge. We will be selling the commercial heifers first, then the bulls, and end with the registered heifers. We d like to thank our hired man, Tim Johnson, for his help through the past year. Tim is a valuable asset to our operation and we couldn t get everything done without his help. Logan Pederson, our great grandson, grandson, nephew was here this past summer. Logan was a huge amount of help and we appreciate his assistance. Gary and Sue The Pederson Family If you have any questions or if there is any way we can assist you please don t hesitate to contact us. The cattle can be viewed at the ranch anytime. Stop in and have a cup of coffee with us we d love to visit with you. Check our website ( and Facebook page ( for updated color photos, videos and supplement sheets. We look forward to seeing you on March 4. The Pederson Broken Heart Ranch crew Chad, Lisa and Bricelyn

5 On November 23, 2014, we said goodbye to our wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma, and ranch matriarch, Helen Pederson. She left us 96 years young and after being married to Grandpa Ralph for just over 71 years! Grandma lead a great life. It s hard to imagine all the changes Grandma witnessed. Grandma Helen was a true ranch wife many ladies of her era were housewives who occasionally helped on the ranch. Grandma Helen was a ranch wife through and through who could and would complete any task on the ranch. Two of her favorite ranch activities were working cattle, where she always had to be bringing cattle up the alley (even at 80+ years of age) and driving silage truck I don t think her foot knew where the brake was at! Grandma offered a vision and foresight that made our ranch the success it is today both on the cattle and horse parts of our operation. It was her vision that convinced Grandpa Ralph that we needed to breed our then commercial Hereford cattle to Red Angus bulls, and then pushed him to purchase our first Red Angus female in the early 1960s. That decision has allowed us to remain faithful Red Angus breeders for well over 50 years. It was Grandma s love and passion of horses, especially racehorses, that drove our ranch legacy of breeding Quarter Horses for over 50 years too. Grandma appreciated the economic impact of the cattle portion of our ranch, but her true love was her horses. Because of her love and dedication of breeding, she and Grandpa s home is filled with racing awards from around the country. They even bred and raised an AQHA World Champion in Western Riding. Grandma was a humble and kind individual. She knew hard times and even harder work, both of which made her appreciate good times and success. We ll miss you Grandma Helen, but know you are watching cows and mares grazing belly deep in hard West River grass, while their calves and foals are playing in the sun on the hillside. We also know you won life s greatest race, and will be winning many more horse races in heaven. We pledge to keep your humbleness, passion, faith, work ethic and kindness alive for many generations to come. Pederson s Broken Heart Ranch 3
