Analele ştiinţifice ale Universităţii Al. I. Cuza Iaşi Tomul LVII, fasc. 2, s. II a. Biologie vegetală, 2011 NEW CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FLORA OF ROMANIA A. OPREA, C. SÎRBU, M. DOROFTEI Abstract: In this paper, the authors report new data on chorology of various plant species in Romania, as: Chenopodium ambrosioides L., Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx., Paspalum paspalodes (Michx.) Scribn., Lupinus polyphyllus Lindl., Oenothera glazioviana Micheli, and so on. Corispermum canescens Schult., C. hyssopifolium L., and Rosa villosa subsp. villosa are confirmed in the flora of Romania, by herbarium material. All the collected specimens are deposited in the Herbarium of University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Ion Ionescu de la Brad, Iaşi (IASI). Keywords: alien plants, natural occurrence, Romania s flora. Introduction In the last decades, there is a continuous enrichment of flora with other new species, which are generally alien species, due to a better coverage of the Romanian territory with floristic studies and especially, because of the intensification of human pressure on habitats and the increase of the internal and international movement of people and goods. Therefore, new alien species have been reported in recent years, both in Moldavia [66-71] and in other historical provinces of Romania [2-5; 13; 26]. Data on occurrence, ways of introduction and ecology of different plant species in the flora of Romania (e. g. Amaranthus hypochondriacus, Celosia argentea var. cristata, Chenopodium ambrosioides, Commelina communis, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Impatiens balsamina, Panicum miliaceum subsp. miliaceum, Perilla frutescens var. frutescens etc.) are given in this paper. A special section is represented by those native species in the flora of Romania. Thus, the authors confirm the presence of several plants in Romania s flora of the next taxa: Corispermum canescens, Corispermum hyssopifolium, and Rosa villosa subsp. villosa. Materials and methods The floristic and chorological data are based on our recent field investigations, conducted in different localities of Romania. For each identified species, there are given informations concerning their previously reported occurrence, as well as their current distribution in Romania. Herbarium vouchers are deposited in the general herbarium of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Iaşi. The species nomenclature is given according to Flora Europaea [74-75]. Terminology and definitions recommended by Richardson & al. [61] and Pyšek & al. [58], were used for establishing the status of alien plants. Anastasie Fătu Botanical Garden, Al. I. 2 Most of the alien species in this paper are casual species (i. e. vagrant species occasionally within a location, and do not having a stable and regular occurence within a certain region, locality, or belt of vegetation). Results and discussions During our field surveys in the recent years, we have identified new vascular plant species in the spontaneous and / or sub-spontaneous flora of Romania. Some of these species are native to Europe (e. g. Corispermum canescens Kit., Corispermum hyssopifolium L., Rosa villosa subsp. villosa), while the others are alien species into the Romania s flora. Among the alien species, two are xenophytes, being introduced accidentally (e. g. Paspalum distichum, Panicum dichotomiflorum), while the others were intentionally introduced by humans, for different uses (mainly as ornamental plants) and, subsequently, escaped from cultivation in the wild (hemerophyte species). Having in mind the number of localities in which these plants were identified in Romania, the following taxa show an invasive tendency, as they are: Chenopodium ambrosioides, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Lupinus polyphyllus, Oenothera glazioviana, Paspalum distichum, etc. The other species could be naturalized, due to they form fertile seeds (e.g. Perilla frutescens var. futescens, Oxalis corniculata, Panicum miliaceum subsp. miliaceum) or show a great capacity for the vegetative propagation, being able to form stable populations, without human help. Except Corispermum canescens Kit., Corispermum hyssopifolium L., and Rosa villosa L. subsp. villosa, which grows in natural habitats, all the other identified species are integrated into anthropogenic habitats. Some of these species, as: Paspalum distichum, Lupinus polyphyllus, Chenopodium ambrosioides and so on, also penetrate into the natural habitats, as: riverbanks, river meadows, grasslands, etc. a) Species confirmed in Romania Corispermum canescens Kit. annual, T, VII-IX, cm, simple or long branched, usually pubescent; leaves liniar; spickes long and lax; bracts ovate, acute, broadly membranous-margined, covering fruits; achene of mm, ovate or orbicular; wing broad, 1/4 1/8 as wide as the achene, translucent, erose. Some authors, as Schur (1866) [64], Borza (1947) [7] and Morariu, in Săvulescu (1952) [63] have cited C. canescens Kit. as a synonim of C. marschalii Stev.; however, in Flora Europaea [1; 75], but also in the most recent edition of an identification field book of Romanian flora [14], C. canescens Kit. and C. marschalii Stev. are recognized as distinct taxa. These two species have different types of inflorescences, irrespective, spikes usually short and dense at C. marschalii and long, lax spikes at C. canescens! Brândză ( ) [11] said that C. canescens Kit. was spread on sandy places in Moldavia (cf. Szabo Exsic.). Grecescu (1898) cited this species as C. canescens Kit. in litt. Schultz oest. flora 1 p. 7 (1814); Moq. -Tend. in DC. Prodr. 13, part. 2, p. 141; Neilr. diagn. p C. intermedium auct. hung. quoad pl. hung. non Schweig. C. marschalii v. floridum lus 2 Fenzl. in Ledeb. fl. ross. 3, p August-September; sands on Danube dunes; Bucura 80

towards Pătule, Mehedinţi county; Calafat at Poeana; sandy dunes at Constanţa towards Tăbăcărie, Mamaia and Tuzla [29]. Prodan (1935) [55] cited this species from Danube Delta, on Letea and Caraorman sand dunes, as well as from Constanţa county (sand dunes at Constanţa Tăbăcărie, toward Mamaia and Tuzla), but with no any referrence to the existence of collected herbarium material (probably, all his data were cited according to Grecescu, 1898 [29]). It should be noted that in the last edition of the identification field book of romanian flora [14] there is said:...there are no herbarium material in herbarium collections in Romania.... Nevertheless, in Flora Europaea (2010, I: 120), this species is cited growing in Romania s flora [1; 75]. The authors of this paper confirm the presence of C. canescens Kit. in Romania, distributed as many individuals, on sandy banks, along the Siret river, at Şerbeştii Vechi (Galaţi county) (leg. A. Oprea & C. Sîrbu, 2011, August, 2). Origins: Central & East Europe. Obs.: C. canescens Kit. is a very rare species in Romania, so it could be considered as vulnerable (VU), according the IUCN criteria [77], as the habitat of this species is extremely vulnerable to the human activities, as well as to the natural flooding, in the Inferior Basin of Siret river. Corispermum hyssopifolium L. annual, T, VII-IX, cm, stem branched from the base; leaves liniar, spikes long, narrow, ± lax; lower bracts longer than achene, upper ones shorter and narrower than achene; perianth segments 1 ( 3); achene mm, ovate; wing very narrow, thin, 1/10 as wide as the achene, sometimes absent, apex rounded, entire [32; 1]. C. hyssopifolium L. is cited in flora of Romania by Prodan (1939) [56] and Prodan, in Săvulescu (1952) [63], from Leorda, Huşi and Fălciu, toward the banks of Siret river, but it is said there are no any herbarium material, its presence being dubious in Romania s flora [63]. Also, accordingly to Flora Europaea [1; 75] (2010: 120), C. hyssopifolium sensu L. is absent in Romania. The authors of this paper confirm now the presence of C. hyssopifolium sensu L. in flora of Romania, distributed as many individuals, on sandy banks, along the Siret river, at Şerbeştii Vechi (Galaţi county) (leg. A. Oprea & C. Sîrbu, 2011 August, 2). Origins: South & Central of Russia, Ukraine [32]. Obs.: although C. hyssopifolium sensu L. was not confirmed in flora of Romania till now, this species is registered as rare (R) into one of the Red List of Vascular Plants in Romania [47]. Indeed, it is a very rare species in Romania, so it could be considered as vulnerable (VU), according the IUCN [77] criteria, as the habitat of this species is vulnerable to the human disturbancies, as well as to the natural flooding. Rosa villosa L. subsp. villosa (Syn.: R. pomifera J. Herrmann; R. villosa L. subsp. pomifera ( J. Herrmann) Hook. fil.; R. mollis Buia, non Sm.) shrub, Ph, VI-VII. This species has been previously reported from Bârnova village and Repedea hill (Iaşi county) [38], Pojorâta village on Muncel Montain (Suceava county) ( in Prodan, 1932 [54] cited by Nyárády, 1955, as spontaneous?) [46]), and from Codru-Moma Mountains (Câmpul Scheriţei de Jos towards the summit of Lupăriei-Moneasa) [53]. 81

In a paper about the lignaceous plants in Romania, both in the wild and in cultivation, it is said this species is cultivated in the Botanical Gardens of Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest [24]. In Flora Europaea (2010: 31), it is said that Rosa villosa L. subsp. villosa is growing in the wild flora of Romania [74]. This species has been identified by us in a new location in Romania, namely: the Nature Reserve Cheile Şugăului Munticelul, Eastern Carpathians (Neamţ county). Origins: Central & South Europe, extending northwards to the Netherlands [74]. Obs.: Rosa villosa L. subsp. villosa is a very rare taxa in Romania, so it could be considered as vulnerable (VU ), according the IUCN criteria [77], as the habitat of this species is vulnerable to the human activities. b) Alien species (xenophytes) identified in new localities of Romania Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx. annual or perennial, T H, VII-VIII. It was cited along the railways, between Feteşti (Ialomiţa county) and Cernavodă (Constanţa county) towns [44]. Also, this plant species has been identified in Maramureş, Oltenia, and Muntenia provinces [44]. In Moldavia, it has been reported for the first time in Tecuci South railway station (Galaţi county) [48] and Socola-Iaşi shunting station (Iaşi county) [49]. This species has been recently identified in Transylvania s flora (Cluj-Napoca railway station) [26]. It is reported now in other new localities, namely: Galaţi, Movileni, and Tirighina- Barboşi railway stations (Galaţi county), as well as in Sibiu railway station (Sibiu county). Origins: North America. Paspalum distichum L. ( Syn.: Paspalum paspalodes (Michx.) Scribn.; Digitaria paspalodes Michx.) perennial, H, VII-X. This species has been cited, for the first time in Romania s flora, in the surroundings of Letea village (Danube Delta, Tulcea county) [62]. Later on, Anastasiu & al., 2005, cited it on Moldova Veche Island and the Nera pond Caraş-Severin county (along the Danube river) [2]. It is reported now in a new location in Romania: Danube Delta, at Mila 28, along a drainage channel, parallel with the Sulina channel, inside the Rusca zone, powered by the infiltration waters or periodic floodings; the water level is stagnant and sunny. Origins: Tropics. c) Alien species (hemerophytes) identified in new localities in Romania Amaranthus caudatus L. annual, T, VII-X. It is a cultivated species in Romania, as ornamental; sometimes, it is spread as sub-spontaneous in the wild. As an escaped plant from cultivation in ruderal places it is cited occasionally in Transylvania [7; 9; 44], Maramureş [52], Muntenia [10; 19] and Dobrudja [15]. This species is reported now as a new one in Moldavia s flora (identified in Iaşi city), and in other new localities, as Crişan village and Sulina town (Danube Delta, Tulcea county). Origins: South America. Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. (Syn.: Amaranthus hybridus L. subsp. hypochondriacus (L.) Thell., A. hybridus L. subsp. erythrostachys Moq.) annual, T, VII- 82

X. It is cultivated in Romania as an ornamental plant; sometimes, it is reported as subspontaneous in the wild. It has been identified by Schur, 1866 [64] in Sibiu city (Sibiu county) (on garbages resulting from gardens, in ruderal places, etc.). Later on, it has been identified in other localities in Transylvania, and in other historical provinces, as: Maramureş, Banat, Oltenia, Muntenia, Dobrudja) [7]. In Moldavia, this species has been cited as sub-spontaneous in the wild, firstly, by Răvăruţ et al., 1961 [59], as A. hypochondriacus L. var. erythrostachys Moq. (still, due to the fact that herbarium material is lacking, all samples designated as A. hypochondriacus are, as a matter of fact, A. powellii S. Watson, in those three official herbaria in Iaşi: I, IAGB, IASI!). There is possible that the old data were given as erroneous in Romania!. This species has been collected in Nicolina-Iaşi railway station, as well as in Moţca village (Iaşi county) and Taşca village (Neamţ county), always around the railways [67]. This species is reported now as a new species into the Danube Delta s flora: Crişan village (Tulcea county). Origins: South-West of North America. Antirrhinum majus L. annual, T, VII-X. It is cultivated as an ornamental species, in Romania. The first mention of this species in Romania as escaped from cultivation ( but, with no precisely location! ) has been made by Baumgarten, 1816 [6]. Later on, it has been reported in various localities, as a sub-spontaneous one in the wild: Maramureş, Transylvania, Banat, Oltenia, Muntenia, and Dobrudja provinces [63]. In Moldavia, this species has been collected from Piatra Neamţ [69]. It is reported now as a sub-spontaneous species in other localities in Moldavia s flora, namely: Unirea (Vrancea county), the railway stations of Bârlad and Negreşti (Vaslui county), Nicolina, Leţcani and Paşcani railway stations (Iaşi county), Târgu Bujor town (Galaţi county) and Iaşi city (Iaşi county). Origins: Mediteranean region. Callistephus chinensis (L.) Nees annual, T, VIII-X. It is cultivated in Romania, as an ornamental plant. This species is reported now as new into the sub-spontaneous flora of Dobrudja: Crişan village ( Tulcea county), and in a new locality, in Transylvania: Sibiu city. Origins: East Asia. Celosia argentea L. var. cristata (L.) O. Kuntze (C. cristata L.) annual, T, VIII- X. It is cultivated in Romania, as an ornamental plant. It has been reported as a subspontaneous species in the wild, in surroundings of Bucharest city [63]. This plant is reported now as a new one into the sub-spontaneous flora of Danube Delta: Crişan village (Tulcea county). Origins: Tropics. Chenopodium ambrosioides L. ( Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clements) annual, T, VIII-X. Sometimes, this plant is cultivated as a medicinal one in Romania. This species is cited as sub-spontaneous in the wild, in the first half of the 18 th century, being identified firstly in Transylvania, in Axente Sever and Zlatna (Sigerus 1791, cited by Fuss, 1846, 1866 [27; 28] and Simonkai, 1866 [65; 66]. Nevertheless, all those data were considered dubious by Simonkai, 1886 [65]. Heuffel, 1858 [30] consider this species as common in Banat, in ruderal places, along the roads, etc. 83

Ch. ambrosioides has also been reported in the 20 th century, in various localities in Romania s flora, as: Vişeu Maramureş county [60], Cluj-Napoca city (incl. Cetăţuia hill [17; 56], Turda [27; 28], Dupuşul [63; 65; 66], Arpaşu de Jos, Avrig, Axente Sever and Sibiu (Sibiu county) [23], Timişoara at Ronaţ [12], Orşova along the Graţca valley Mehedinţi county [42], Codru-Moma Mountains (at Câmpul Scheriţei de Jos towards the Summit of Lupăriei-Moneasa [53], in railway stations of Ploieşti South and Teleajen Prahova county [45], Comana Giurgiu county [73], Gropeni Brăila county (personal communication, I. Sârbu, 2004), Sulina [20], Casimcea and Cheia Tulcea county [31]. As a wild plant in Moldavia s flora it has been cited from Galaţi as Ch. anthelminticum [34; 37], Podu Iloaiei [39], Bârnova and Repedea hill Iaşi county [38]. Ch. ambrosioides could be considered as a rare or sporadic plant in Romania nowadays, being present in all regions, from the forest-steppe zone to the nemoral zone. It is reported now in other new localities in Romania, as: Galaţi (incl. Cotul Pisicii), on sand banks along the Danube river, along the Siret banks at Şerbeştii Vechi and on Musura Island (Danube Delta, Tulcea county). Origins: Tropics. Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsumura et Nakai annual, T, VII-VIII. The first mention as a sub-spontaneous species in the wild has been made by Uechtritz & Sintenis brothers (1876) ( in Kanitz, [33]) from Dobrudja. Morariu, 1943 also cited this species in Romania s flora, giving no precisely location, however [41]. It is reported now as a new sub-spontaneous plant in the wild, as a vagrant species, into the Danube Delta (Crişan village, Tulcea county), and in Moldavia s flora (Iaşi - Iaşi county and Huşi -Vaslui county). It has been edited as Commelina coelestis Willd. (FRE No. 2642, collected in Mileni village, Mehedinţi county (leg. Em. Ţopa, 1944). It is reported now as a new, vagrant species, into the Danube Delta (Crişan and Sulina Tulcea county) and in new localities in Moldavia: Barboşi village (Galaţi county). Origins: Temperate Asia. Euphorbia marginata Pursh annual, T, VIII-IX. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in Romania, and it has been reported as a sub-spontaneous species in the wild in several localities, as: Hupca - Vaslui county [66] and Letea (Danube Delta, Tulcea county) [20]. It is reported now in Crişan (Danube Delta) and Sagna (Neamţ county). Origins: North America (from Minnesota to Colorado and Texas). Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marshall (Syn.: F. pubescens Lam.) tree, Ph, VI-IX. It is an introduced species in Europe for ornamental, forestry or anti-erosional uses, since 1780 [16; 24]. It is spread as an alien plant in numerous countries of Central Europe [18; 21]. It is is an invasive plant, threatening native habitats and vegetal communities, in 84

Austria [25]. It is also considered as one of the most invasive alien plant in Hungary, being common everywhere [16]. The number of localities in which F. pennsylvanica is met in Romania (as a subspontaneous tree in the wild) is continuously increasing, therefore this species was recorded on the list of the invasive species [4]. It grows well on light, wet, well drained soils, tolerating well floods and frost [24]. Also, this species produces many fruits, easily spreaded by the wind, in almost all of these localities. The authors of this paper have identified quiet frequently this species in Moldavia during the recent years, especially along the roads, railways and in railway stations, and on ruderal lands, in: Hanu Ancuţei (Neamţ county) [71], Miclăuşeni [71], Iaşi (Socola railway station and along the C. A. Rosetti Street [71]), Vaslui, Munteni de Jos, Bârlad, and Sălcioara (Vaslui county) [71]. It is reported now in other localities in Romania: Crişan village (Danube Delta, Tulcea county). Origins: Eastern part of North America. Impatiens balsamina L. annual, T, VII-IX. It is a rare, sub-spontaneous species, in the wild, cited from: Constanţa harbour [3], Muntenia [5], Iaşi [66] and Piatra Neamţ [69]. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in Romania. Since the first half of the 20 th century. It has been reported as a more or less common sub-spontaneous species in the wild, in many localities, as in Muntenia [40] and Transylvania [7; 57]. Later on, it has been cited from the other provinces. Nowadays, it is currently being naturalized, invasive sometimes. In Moldavia, it has been recently cited as a sub-spontaneous species [50]. It is reported now as a sub-spontaneous plant in Crişan village (Danube Delta, Tulcea county). Origins: Tropical America. Lupinus polyphyllus Lindl. perennial, H, VIII-IX. It was introduced as an ornamental or a fodder plant in Romania. Starting with the mid of the 20 th century it began to be reported as a sub-spontaneous plant in the wild in Transylvania (Arieş valley, Alba county) and Maramureş (however, with no precisely location! ) [7]. It was collected also in Moldavia, at Fundu Moldovei village (Suceava County) ( IASI herbarium, leg. anonymous, 1952) and later on, it has been cited in other several localities of the same county: Moldoviţa-Ferăstrău [43], Şarul Dornei [35], Vama [36], Vadu Negrilesei (on the banks of a tributary of the Negrileasa stream) [71]. According to Morariu, 1972 [43] in Moldoviţa-Ferăstrău village (Suceava county) it has been brought from Austria, as a fertilizer in nurseries, passing on in nearby meadows, producing fruits and viable seeds. It is reported now in a new location in Romania: Valea Putnei village (Suceava county), in cemetery, where it grows abundantly and produces many fruits and fertile seeds. Origins: North America. Mentha spicata L. subsp. spicata (Syn.: Mentha viridis (L.) L.; M. crispa L.) perennial, H, VII-IX. It is cultivated as a medicinal herb in Romania. Sometimes it is was 85

Muntenia and Banat (with no precisely location, however!) [5; 7], Moldavia (Huşi - Vaslui county, leg. C. Sîrbu, 2007; Pituluşa - Vrancea county, leg. C. Sîrbu, 2010). It is reported now as a new species in the flora of Dobrudja: Crişan village (Tulcea county). Origins: Tropical Africa. Zinnia elegans Jacq. annual, T, VII-IX. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in Romania. As a sub-spontaneous plant it has been cited from various localities, as: Urecheşti - Vrancea county [66], Iaşi (Nicolina, CUG and Mircea cel Bătrân neighborhoods) [66], Huşi, on a ruderal field nearby the railway station (Vaslui county) [68]. It is reported now as a new species in Dobrudja: Crişan (Tulcea county) and in an other locality in Moldavia: Folteşti (Galaţi county). Origins: Tropical Africa. Conclusions All the species presented in this paper, except Corispermum canescens, Corispermum hyssopifolium, and Rosa villosa subsp. villosa, are alien plants (neophytes, xenophytes and hemerophytes). Some species are new for the flora of Moldavia and Dobrudja, while others are quite rare for these regions of Romania. Through their exotic nature and because they can reproduce themselves without human help are a warning signal concerning their future evolution in Romania. Corispermum canescens Kit. and C. hyssopifolium L. are confirmed now, by herbarium materials, in Romania. Rosa villosa subsp. villosa it is a rare plant species in Romania, being registered in Romanian Red List of Vascular Plants, its presence in Moldavia being confirmed now in the wild.
