THS General Biology Unit 4 Exam Review Content: Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration You should be able to complete all of the following tasks, objectives, and answer any questions, without the use of any notes or resources, in order to be successful on the quiz. Good Rule of Thumb : If you can have a conversation about it, then you know and understand it. This Exam: Is 60% of your class grade. Has 13 difficult multiple choice questions. o 4 questions on photosynthesis. o 4 questions on cellular respiration o 2 questions on the connection between photosynthesis and cellular respiration. o 3 questions on ATP and energy cycling. Has 1 difficult application, written response question. o Interrelatedness of photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
Photosynthesis Content: 1. Define photosynthesis. 2. Identify the full chemical equation for photosynthesis. 3. What is the purpose of photosynthesis? 4. Discuss how energy is transferred and converted during photosynthesis. Cellular Respiration Content 5. Define cellular respiration. 6. Identify the full chemical equation for cellular respiration. 7. What is the purpose of cellular respiration? 8. Discuss how energy is transferred during cellular respiration. Other Content: 9. What is ATP? 10. What is chemical potential energy? 11. What is electromagnetic energy? 12. What is kinetic energy? 13. How do photosynthetic organisms rely on non-photosynthetic organisms? 14. How does energy move through the environment?
BIG Written Question to Plan Ahead for: (We will NOT go over these answers in class. As a student, you are advised to practice writing out your responses ahead of time, and asking your teacher for any clarification if necessary.) Background Information: Scientists were trying to study the relationship/s between plants and animals in an experiment. The scientists set up the experiment and in one specific set-up, 1 small aquatic plant and 3 aquatic snails were all placed together in an aquarium tank. The organisms were given fresh, pure distilled water, and were provided a regular source of UV sunlight (through a sunlamp). After letting the plant and snails live together for 24hours, the scientists came back to record data and observations. Surprisingly they found that the plant was still living, but 2 out of the 3 snails had died.
The following includes a variety of data collected throughout the experiment: Experimental Set-Up SET-UP A 1 Aquatic Plant (in water with sunlight) SET-UP B 1 Aquatic Animal (in water with sunlight) SET-UP C 1 Aquatic Plant (in water without sunlight) SET-UP D 1 Aquatic Animal (in water without sunlight) SET-UP E 1 Aquatic Plant and 1 Aquatic Animal (in water with sunlight) SET-UP H 1 Aquatic Plant and 3 Aquatic Animals (in water with sunlight) Bromothymol Blue Results Blue Yellow Yellow Yellow Green Yellow-Green

CER WRITING PROMPT: Use relevant pieces of data from the experiment, along with your understanding of Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis, to EXPLAIN WHY THE 1 PLANT SURVIVED THE EXPERIMENT, BUT 2/3 OF THE SNAILS DIED.
CER Writing Elements: Contains a clear, concise and scientifically accurate claim. Claim is written without the use of personal pronouns. ( I, we, my, etc.) At least two clear, detailed, and scientifically accurate examples of evidence/data are provided. Examples of evidence/data support claim. Reasoning is provided as explanation for the evidence/data supporting the claim. Highly Proficient Proficient Minimally Proficient Not Proficient Writing had a complete, clear, and scientifically accurate 10pts claim. Writing did not contain personal pronouns. Writing contains at least two clear and/or accurate 9pts examples of scientific evidence/data. Scientific evidence/data supports initial claim. Writing explains accurately and completely how the scientific evidence/data supports the claim. Writing had a complete, clear, and scientifically accurate 8pts claim. Writing did not contain personal pronouns. Writing contained at least two clear and/or accurate 7pts examples of scientific evidence/data. Scientific evidence/data supports initial claim. Minimal, missing, and/or inaccurate explanations of how the evidence/data supports the claim. Writing had a complete, clear, and scientifically accurate 6pts claim. Writing may have used personal pronouns. Writing had 1 or less clear and/or accurate examples of 5pts scientific evidence/data. Scientific evidence may not have supported initial claim. Minimal, missing, and/or inaccurate explanations of how the evidence/data supports the claim. 4pts Writing did not have a complete, clear, and/or 3pts scientifically accurate claim. Writing may have used personal pronouns. 2pts Writing did not contain at least two clear and/or accurate examples of scientific evidence/data. Lack of support for claim.
Minimal to no detailed explanation. 0pts Entire CER writing not attempted at all.
