Speaker: Stig Dalström Topic: Orchids of Bhutan February s featured speaker is internationally renowned taxonomist Stig Dalström. Stig s presentation will focus on how he ended up in Bhutan and his work as a research associate of the National Biodiversity Centre in Thimphu (the capitol) focusing on orchid research and conservation. Bhutan, officially know as The Kingdom of Bhutan, is home to one of the richest and most diverse orchid flora in the world. Over 369 species have been recorded and described, 82 being unique to Bhutan. During Stig s tenure there, among other things he was searching for, and had success finding, were new locations for Paphiopedilum fairrieanum and venustum. He was successful despite that venustum is still super rare to find in situ due to overcollecting some years ago by Indian collectors in combination with local villagers. In case you are curious, Bhutan is slightly larger than Maryland, with a population of under 1 million. Situated on the ancient Silk Road of the Himalayas eastern edge, bordered by Tibet Autonomous Region of China Bhutanese women in Kira in the north, the Sikkim state of India and the Chumbi Valley of Tibet in the west, the Arunachal Pradesh state of India in the east, and the states of Assam and West Bengal in the south. Despite the colonization of her neighbors, Bhutan miraculously has managed to maintained its independence throughout the centuries. The Bhutanese state has developed a distinct national identity that is based on Buddhism Often referred to as the last great Himalayan Kingdom this small paradise is known for its rich culture, monasteries, fortresses (or dzongs) and unspoiled dramatic landscapes that range from subtropical plains to steep mountains and valleys. Since the mid 1970 s tourism has been tightly controlled. All visitors (with the exception of Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian passport holders) are required to use state sanctioned tour agencies and guides. Please review the following carefully: For AOS judging, specific entry forms must be completed and left with the AOS clerks. Since this is an AOS-sanctioned show, all plants exhibited may be considered for AOS awards unless NO AOS JUDGING is written on the entry card or on the display. Plants may not be judged at a later date on the same inflorescence. Entry cards must be completed for all plants entered in competition. The exhibitor is responsible for removing the bottom portion of the entry card and submitting it to the plant entry desk. If the bottom part of the entry card is NOT given to the plant entry desk, the plant will NOT be judged in competition. Simply placing an entry card on the plant alone is not sufficient. No more than three (3) plants can be entered in a single Class by any exhibitor. Plants entered in show judging must have been cared for directly by the exhibitor for at least 6 months. Judges may decline to consider a plant if ownership is questioned. Plants incorrectly labeled or entered may be eliminated. To be considered as a specimen, an entry must be one clone, with all growths still connected by an intact rhizome (one individual plant). If a pot or mount contains more than one individual plant, which individual is entered for ribbon judging must be clearly indicated. If a plant is found to be infected or infested, it will be disqualified and isolated, and its exhibitor will be asked to remove it from the show. Exhibitors will be issued badges and must wear them during take down on Sunday. All plants and items exhibited must remain on display throughout the show. Removal cannot begin until Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Only those with vendor or exhibitor badges will be permitted in the exhibit area after closing on Sunday to break down their exhibits and remove their plants. The SFOS will provide 24-hour security guard services for the duration of the show. Every effort will be made to safeguard all items entered. However, exhibitors assume all risk and liability for their property. 13

The event features food wine and other beverages, a special presentation by Steve Kirby on Orchid Conservation in Costa Rica, and a fund raising auction of special orchids donated by OCA members and friends. A wonderful opportunity to connect with the orchid conservation community. Tickets $100 per person. Due to limitations in the venue, tickets are strictly limited, so please buy your ticket in advance! contact: Mary Gerritsen Mary@orchidconservationalliance.org Shindig is just below the USCF parking garage. Directions: yelp.com/map/shin-dig-san-francisco-2 The Orchid Conservation Alliance raises monies to protect Orchids and their Habitats. A portion of your ticket purchase is a tax deductible donation. 20 SFOS Board Meeting Minutes January 7, 2019 You can help... Board Attendees: Jeff Harris, Erik Sayle, Faye Rabino, Jeremiah Chua, Antonnette Queri, Ron Norris, Angelique Fry Board members not present: Dave Hermeyer, Debra Vails-Qualters, Claire Zvanski/Florence Inserto Zoom Meeting called to order: 7:03pm CFO Report - Faye Reviewed this month s report including some mintor outstanding items our accountant is reconciling. We ve paid for our 2019 meeting rent, insurance, and are in good shape for POE. Ron made a motion to accept the report as presented by Faye; Jeremiah seconded the motion - Jeff called for a vote which was unanimous to accept. The San Francisco Orchid Society joins other orchid societies and businesses participating in the 1% FOC campaign by committing to budget 1%or more of our net revenue towards in situ orchid conservation projects. For more information: VP report - Erik Dan Newman (Hanging Gardens) will be the speaker and supplying the plant table for the meeting on 01/08/19. Tom Perlite will do a skills session on Preparing Plants for Shows/Displays The Feb 5 speaker is Stig Dalstrom, and Bob Hamilton (Hawk Hill) is donating the plant table. John McCallen will do the skills session on Growing Phragmipedilums. President s update - Jeff: SFOS Meeting Rooms Open discussion on keeping the skill session room vs other options. Current monthly SF CFB rental costs are $39 for the rec room (for skills session) for 2 hours (6-8p), ~$25 for the garden club room (for judging) for 2 hours (7-9pm), and $132 for the main auditorium for 4 hours (6-10pm). Group agreed to keep the current arrangement, but we ought to better promote the skill sessions to get more use out of that space. POE Updates - Angelique Fry We re currently experiencing a ticketing issue on the website that will cost us roughly $400 for the necessary updates. Angelique also noted this year s gala musicians, The Letterboxers, have graciously agreed to perform for co-promotion as a sponsor. Old Business - Filoli & POE display Several members have stepped up to help with the Filoli plant displays - Tom Perlite is putting a large Phal amabilis in the entry way; Lynne Murrell is bringing some plants from her own collection, as well as potentially from her neighboring greenhouse growers - Susan Anderson, Sergio Garcia and Tom Pickford; Gary Barg is bringing some Cattleyas in bloom; and Bob Hamilton and John Leathers are bringing some odontoglossums. We still need volunteers to staff the show (4 per day Jan 10-21) and also to plant to bring plants for display during POE. SF Flower and Garden Show We have to a small booth to have members promote SFOS, but need members to volunteer to staff that booth. Officer/Board search committee We re looking for another person to help search for new board members with Chris Mende. Current Board, if you are thinking of stepping down, please reach out to Jeff and Chris. Upcoming Orchids in the Wild trips April 16, 2019 Yunnan, China June 4, 2019 Rio Negro, Brazil September 17, 2019 Madagascar For more information, see the OCA website: org 20

21 Orchids in the Park dates Orchids in the Park, we ve decided to keep the same dates as last year 7/20-21 dispite concerns about overlapping event dates with the last two days of 2019 Flower Piano event. Update on Jack s Case No new relevant updates - next court date still on Jan 30. New Business - Possibility of Collaboration with SFBG Corey Barnes - Associate Curator at the San Francisco Botanical Garden (SFBG) - contacted Jeff to discuss a potential collaboration with SFOS at a November 1st SFBG sales event. He also invited two other people, Jessa Barzelay, SFBG Director of Learning and Engagement as well as Brittney Burrows, SFBG Event Manager to discuss other opportunities to work together. Cory will be ing Jeff for more information on the collaboration sale. A dialogue has been opened but nothing has been confirmed. Stay tuned. New Business - Membership Donation/Levels Should we leave the current wording on the membership page or change our dues/donor membership levels? Will reopen for discussion in the March/April, after POE. Next POE Show Committee meeting - will be moved from Jan 21 to Feb 04.
