1 Nov. 3, 2016 Thinking About Next Year Managing Weeds this Fall When harvest winds down, it s natural for growers to start thinking about the next growing season. One of the first, and best thing to do is get a jump on weeds with fall applications. Many of our most troublesome weeds early in the season are winter annuals that germinate in the fall and establish prior to ground freeze-up and winter. Dandelion, Marestail, Prickly lettuce, Biennial thistles, Field pennycress, Henbit, and Others = Fall is best time to control these tough weeds as they carry nutrients to the root zone before dormancy. Kochia, Giant ragweed, Lambsquarters, Sunflower, Marestail, and Others = Fall residual applications can provide control of these early spring annual weeds. Waterhemp/Palmer pigweed, Foxtail, Velvetleaf, Nightshade, Morningglory and Others = For summer annual weeds like these, a spring application or a fall/spring split of residual s would be best to provide the residual needed for in-season control. For Fall Applied Residual Herbicides, the best timing is when soil temps are F and going down. By then, most winter annuals are emerged to allow for maximum control with the burndown and reduces degradation of residual s by microbes to extend control longer into the spring. Fall applications of residual s on coarse textured soils is generally not recommended to prevent leaching and loss of the with winter and spring moisture. 2 Non-Residual Programs for Winter Annuals for Corn, Soybeans Controlling emerged winter annual weeds (marestail, henbit, pennycress, shepherdspurse, chickweed) in the fall can be effective using 2,4-D or 2,4-D + Dicamba tankmixes / premixes. For winter annual grasses like downy brome, cheat, Carolina foxtail, foxtail barley, add glyphosate at labeled rates. Fall is the best time to kill these grasses or also to take out old alfalfa stands. 2,4-D 1 qt./a + dicamba 4-8 oz. this fall. Apply appropriate labeled Authority s, Anthem MAXX, Anthem ATZ program next spring as a preplant/at-plant for residual in-crop. Fall Applied Residual Corn or Soybeans Use oz/a 2,4-D LV4 or oz/a 2,4-D LV oz/a dicamba Plus Authority MTZ DF at oz/a Flex-crop advantage Rotate to either corn (4 month corn rotation at 14 oz or less) or soybeans. Take advantage of changes in commodity prices to keep cropping choices open. Excellent residual kochia, lambsquarters in early spring. Non-ALS option to help combat resistance. (Fall) Guidelines & Expectations for Fall Applications Fall Applications are NOT intended to provide full season residual control the following year of weeds like waterhemp, velvetleaf, Palmer pigweed, grasses, and other summer annuals. Sequential or overlapping residual s At-Plant or Post are required for control through the growing season. Apply residual s when soil temperature is F and declining to prevent degradation and extend residual farther into spring. Generally after Oct. 15 th, but that may depend on the fall weather. Include labeled rates of glyphosate for control of emerged winter annual grasses. 10 gpa minimum spray volume. Use 15 gpa for heavy crop residue / weed cover for better coverage. For chickweed, either glyphosate, dicamba, or Express is needed. Authority s applied in the FALL may provide some grass suppression up to planting. If grass control is a concern, than add a PRE grass in fall like pendamethalin (Prowl ) to the above residual programs for additional grass activity.

3 Kochia Management Fall: OK, KS, NE, SD, WY, & CO. Kochia is an early emerging summer annual weed. It takes advantage of spring moisture from snow, rain and establishes before most other weeds. It can germinate in late February or March depending on where in the High Plains you are. Because of its early emergence, it can establish itself before weather conditions are good for burndown spraying in early spring. The spread of glyphosate resistant kochia and now the confirmation of dicamba resistance in kochia makes it more critical that we do not let kochia become established in fields. Controlling it with PRE s applied in the fall is an effective alternative to trying to kill it after it s up in the spring. Authority or Spartan s are very strong on kochia and have demonstrated outstanding residual performance from fall applications. By getting ahead of kochia germination, we can keep kochia from emerging and allow for better control when we plant in the spring and in-crop Fall Fallow Residual Treatments KSU. Authority MTZ DF Fall Applications for Kochia: Plant Corn or Soybeans after 4 months Authority MTZ DF : 8-14 oz/a + 2,4-D LV oz/a Generally use oz on medium/fine soils. On high ph soils (>7.5), low O.M. soils (<1.5%), use 8-10 oz Authority MTZ DF in the fall will also provide good control of lambsquarters, Russian thistle, and other weeds that can emerge before planting. Follow a fall application with a strong residual program like Anthem ATZ, Anthem MAXX + Balance Flexx, Corvus, Acuron preemergence or early post for corn. Soybeans: Follow with a sequential treatment of Authority preplant or at-plant for extending spring control. Anthem Maxx post in soybeans is an option for extending residual activity, but needs to be applied before kochia begins to escape the previous treatment. Authority Assist, XL, or Authority First DF s can also be used in the fall ahead of soybeans for kochia control. Follow all label directions and restrictions for use. Spartan Charge Fall application Field Peas, Sunflowers oz/a = For early kochia control as well as lambsquarters and other early weeds. Follow with a sequential application at planting of either Spartan Charge or Spartan Elite to further the residual control in-crop. A split/sequential application provides greater crop safety on sensitive crops like peas and sunflowers while getting better residual control. Get ahead of kochia this fall.
