A favourite coastal town among locals, it doubles as a melting pot for many cultures around the world. And, because of its pristine waters, white sand beaches, and incredible wildlife variety, this Caribbean coastal area has attracted luxury hotels such as Aguas Claras, a property that thrives within this lush tropical setting with an exclusive and artistic approach to taking time off. It s history is one of a prolonged infatuation from the owners with the town of Puerto Viejo and the south Caribbean magic it exudes, as they have been regular visitors for decades. While they fell in love with the area, opportunity arose for Elizabeth Steinvorth and Elena Rohrmoser. In the beloved complex of cabins that for many years functioned as a space of tranquility and escape for its guests (the original Aguas Claras), they found the pleasant surprise of an unexpected life project. This is how, in 2016, they began their architectural transformation in the area, with the aim of creating a luxurious accommodation space with minimal ecological impact, while carefully respecting the Victorian structure and design of the original bungalows. The complex of the hotel is made up of 6 bungalows that house different facilities, along with 5 themed suites (Pavlova Sweets), all designed to frame the Caribbean experience through the unique viewpoint of the motherdaughter team of owners. Luxuriously modernised, but keeping its Victorian-Caribbean style, each bungalow is carefully decorated with recycled materials, recreated furniture, and found objects crafted by different artists from around the world. 5 J P E S C A P E S This project may have come unexpectedly, but in hindsight, it s a culmination of both Elizabeth and Elena s artistic trajectories. Elizabeth is a renowned watercolourist, also known to be one of the pioneers of upcycling art in Costa Rica. Also, with her keen eye for detail and spotting new talent, she founded La Pulpería del Arte in 2001, one of the first art and design stores in San José. Elena, who s in charge of creative direction, studied Art History in Berlín and has a Masters in Fashion Communication from Parsons School of Design. Aguas Claras is a Caribbean feast for the soul Art is what makes up the essential thread throughout the hotel. Within the complex, the pieces created by several local and international artists, are not only viewed as decoration, they are also greatly valued within Aguas Claras as an intrinsic part of the experience. This process is led by Elizabeth herself, who crafted many standout upcycled artwork, transforming plastic bottle caps, egg cartons, and old magazines into beautiful objects like mirror frames. Her watercolour paintings also grace the interior of Floralia, the biggest house on the complex. Other creatives follow closely, bring the finishing touches to the unique premises. Local design studio, Obra Gris, made the uniforms and macramé objects, Paz Ulloa worked closely with Elena creating pieces for Pavlova Sweets, Natacha Nokin (owner of Lulú Berlú, an art boutique in Puerto Viejo) designed custom lamps and the beautiful mosaic shell mirror in the lobby, Christian Wedel created various murals and paintings, and Santa Furia designed the Papaya Room space. Collaboration is the key word in the Aguas Claras Universe, and the final result is carefully handcrafted, eclectic, graphic, and colourful a Caribbean feast for the soul. To enhance and stimulate creative production throughout Aguas Claras, Elena has created Paraíso Vibes, a series of collaborations intended to explore the secrets of tropical life within Aguas Claras and its surrounding area through the viewpoint of different artists across the world. The idea behind this space and its careful curation of activities and collaborations is for it to become a creative hub for international and local artists so they can connect and develop their ideas through the unique setting of the south Caribbean jungle of Costa Rica. These partnerships have featured creatives like French singer Soko and design studio Dusen Dusen, among others. The rich background that envelops this motherdaughter power duo is perfectly translated in every detail of Aguas Claras the eclectic decór, the architecture, the artists involved, are all carefully orchestrated through their vision.
