Dry night. Michigan After one winter comparison of rumble stripe to surface stripe. Wet night. Surface stripe is still visible on a dry night. The surface stripe disappears on a wet night. 7

8 Structured MMA Striping Application Applying Pavement Marking Correctly High retro-reflectivity plays an essential part in improving safety along US 2 If applied correctly, striping will last. Picture as of February 3, Lessons Learned Inspectors were given retroreflectometer and templates to inspect markings. Retroreflectivity good. Milderwinter with no snow plowing (sofar) Some rain No complaints Pavement Marking System is performing as intended. MMA and Profiled MMA Began using profiled MMA in late 1980 s primarily as a safety measure to get the button crew off the highway. Standard Plan M I assume that we began using flat MMA about this time MMA Performance Very durable WSDOT has profiled MMA on I 5 that is over 10 years old. Provides audible noise (can be too loud) Initial retroreflectivity can be low for extruded MMA. Retroreflectivity decreases to R L +/ and remains at this level. Supplemented with RPMs for wet night retroreflectivity 8

9 Snow plow damage WSDOT Striping Future Goal Provide an appropriate pavement marking on all highways, 365 days per year. Pavement Marking Management More durable products to provide striping i goal Marking protection where needed The Button Machine We have fire, the wheel, boats, trains, automobiles, airplanes, spacetravel, the internet and now: Georgia DOT and Georgia Tech have a working prototype of a Button Machine that applies buttons at 5 mph Video and questions Thank you. 9
