1 mivelg Study Packet (revised October 2017) Attached you will find the materials necessary to prepare for the Chalutzim test and, more importantly, for a wonderful summer in Chalutzim. All of these materials were designed to help you to ensure your success on the entrance exam. The questions on the exam will be drawn from the material in this study guide. If you master the material in the guide, you should have no problem passing the test. You may be familiar with many of the words in the glossary, from previous summers at OSRUI and/or from your Hebrew education at home. You should learn all the words in glossary and be able to translate them from Hebrew to English and English to Hebrew. We suggest that you create flash cards that you can review for 15 minutes every day. This kind of practice will help you tackle the list and feel confident in your knowledge of the vocabulary words and phrases. After you master the vocabulary, turn to the simple questions found on the study pages. Think about how you would answer these questions about yourself. On the exam you will asked a few of these questions. On the last page of the study packet you will find the t fillah (prayer) section. Although you may already feel competent in reciting these prayers, it is important for you to be able to translate the key phrases in them. You should focus your efforts on the ability to translate them from Hebrew into English. In addition to the above, you may be asked to write a short paragraph of at least three sentences in Hebrew. You might be asked to write about things such as your typical day, your family, or why you want to go to Chalutzim. It is recommended that you practice writing a couple of these sample paragraphs BEFORE sitting for the test, as it will help you immensely on the day of the test. The passing score for the Chalutzim Entrance Exam is 70%. If you do not pass the test on the first try in February, we will provide an opportunity for a retest in March. The main purpose of the Chalutzim entrance exam is to motivate all of our campers, or chanichim, to study Hebrew during the fall and winter in order to prepare for the summer. If you feel that you need more support in preparing for this test, a number of congregations in the Chicago area offer Chalutzim prep classes for a nominal fee. If you are in need of such a class, please contact the camp office for a list of locations or speak with your Rabbi, Cantor or Educator for additional help. This year, Rabbi Baden will be coordinating the testing on behalf of the Chalutzim faculty. If you need additional help with preparation for the exam you may contact her by at ibaden@templechai.org or by phone at We want to help our 2018 chanichim prepare for and pass the Chalutzim entrance exam. Have fun and happy studying!
