1 PRACTICE MATERIAL FOR 11+ ENGLISH ENTRANCE EXAM All answers are to be written in ink on the question paper, in the spaces provided. Read the questions and passage carefully - you may highlight or underline information as you read. Answer all the questions carefully in full sentences. Use your own words whenever possible. 3 This story is set in America. Mary Call is 14 years old and has assumed the responsibility of bringing up her brothers and sisters single-handed. They are very poor and fighting for survival under very difficult circumstances. A heavy fall of snow has caused the roof of their house to collapse. Read the passage through twice before answering the questions. The Grey Fox The pig had advanced into the room and was thirstily licking the snow. The rooster ruffled his wings, hopped over to stand beside the pig, filled his throat with air, and foolishly crowed. A plop of snow fell on the bare calf of my leg and I looked up and saw the grey fox of the night before or one just like him. With his tattered back humped high and bristling and his eyes glowing red, he was crouched on the edge of the roof-hole hungrily looking down. His head was motionless. Only his eyes moved, wary and mean, following the movements of the pig and the rooster. Something spoke to me and in the same instant that it did, the rooster crowed and the fox jumped. I smelled it, its wild scent as it hurtled past me and landed almost on top of the pig. The pig screamed and the rooster squawked and flew straight up into the air and I saw my hand move, take up a splintered piece of two-by-four. The pig had slipped away from the fox, was teetering towards the door and the rooster had come down and was dancing in the snow; his terrorized shrieks rent the air. The pieces of two-by-four caught the fox square across the forehead. His eyes rolled up in his head. He reeled backward in the snow. I walked over to him and kicked him hard in the gut. He quivered once and was still. Because I had to, I sat down again. I was a little sick to my stomach but I felt good. Not even a wild fox can lick me, I thought. I just proved it.
