5 Web of Life Type Size (metric): Characteristic Placoid Scales Note: Bio-facts station can let you see a preserved shark skin under a microscope. Take a look at the microscopic placoid scales and read how these structures help sharks and man. In the circle below, draw what you see. Now that you have had fun with the Web of Life activity, see if you can draw lines on this chart showing all the interconnections of an ocean food web. 6 Field Trip Day! Today s the day! Come visit the sunken ship Albatross and help the ship s Naturalist regain some of the research that was lost in the wreck! This section of your booklet is for you to use while exploring the salt and freshwater galleries of the aquarium. Remember, this is a public aquarium so please be respectful of other people, the staff and the facilities. Put a check mark in the brackets located near each set of questions assigned to you. Wear something you can roll the sleeves up on or that can get wet. Stingrays sometimes splash! 7 Comparing... (There are corals in tanks and a coral sign on the side of the Sunken Ship) Choose one characteristic and write about how this helps the animal to survive. Characteristic There are two basic types of coral they are: and Circle the type above that is primarily responsible for reef building. and You can find organisms that filter feed at our Bio-Facts Station, the coral reef and Lion Fish exhibits. Some to look for are: Tube worms, porcelain crab, sea apple, and a tube anemone. What do you think (hypothesize) the filter feeders are eating? _ Observe an organism and write what you think their feeding behavior is. (How they feed) (Use magnifying glass if provided) Type of organism Feeding behavior With a partner to keep time, count the number of times you observe the feeding behavior in one (1) minute and write it here. The following pages highlight a few of the animals you will encounter at The Living Planet Aquarium. Observe these creatures; look at how color or texture, shape, movement or appendages play a role in survival. Choose a characteristic of interest to you and fill in the questions about it. For size, your best guess is ok, but use the metric scale as well. You will find a conversion table at the end of this book. 10 7
