1 Oservtion of phononic helicl edge sttes in mechnicl topologicl insultor Romn Su sstrunk nd Sestin D Huer rxiv: v1 [cond-mtmes-hll] 3 Mr 015 Institute for Theoreticl Phsics, ETH Zurich, 8093 Zu rich, Switzerlnd (Dted: Mrch 5, 015) A topologicl insultor is chrcterized dichotom etween the interior nd the edge of finite sstem: While the ulk hs non-zero energ gp, the edges re forced to sustin ecittions trversing these gps Originll proposed for electrons goverened quntum mechnics, it hs remined n importnt open question if the sme phsics cn e oserved for sstems oeing Newton s equtions of motion Here, we report on mesurements tht chrcterize the collective ehvior of mechnicl oscilltors ehiiting the phenomenolog of the quntum spin hll effect The phononic edge modes re shown to e helicl nd we demonstrte their topologicl protection vi the stilit ginst imperfections Our results open the door to the design of topologicl coustic met-mterils tht cn cpitlize on the stilit of the surfces phonons s relile wve guides The eperimentl hllmrks of the quntum spin Hll effect (QSHE) in semi-conductor quntum wells1 5 re two counter-propgting edge modes tht differ their spin degree of freedom As long s time reversl smmetr is preserved, these two modes re independent nd do not sctter into ech other Much of the interest in condensedmtter reserch involving topologicl sttes is driven the use of these protected edge modes for technologicl pplictions such s spintronics,6,7 mgnetic devices8 or quntum informtion processing9 The trnsfer of the phenomenolog of the QSHE from the quntum mechnicl relm to clssicl mechnicl sstems is therefore oth of fundmentl interest nd gtew towrds new design principles in mechnicl met-mterils Severl ke prolems in the engineering of coustic mterils cn potentill e ddressed cpitlizing on the phsics of the QSHE The edge chnnels re roust counter-prts to the well known whispering gller modes10,11 An ppliction tht requires energ to e confined to the surfces of some device, for emple virtion insultors, cn potentill mke use of such edge sttes In contrst to the whispering gller modes, which re etremel sensitive to the shpe of the surfce,1 the topologicl edge modes re stle under rod rnge of perturtions Moreover, due to the stilit of these modes, scttering-free phonon wve-guides of lmost ritrr shpe cn e relized This in turn enles the engineering of roust coustic del lines13 15 useful for coustic lensing16 How mechnicl sstem descried Newton s equtions cn reproduce the phenomenolog of quntum mechnicl model such s the QSHE hs, however, remined n open question17 19 Moreover, with view to potentil future pplictions, it is essentil to demonstrte tht the phsics of the non-intercting nd dmping-free QSHE cn e oserved in rel mechnicl sstem, which necessril suffers from losses, disorder nd non-linerities inherent to coupled mechnicl oscilltors A quntum-mechnicl lttice prolem is descried Schro dinger eqution of the form αβ β i~ψ iα = Hij ψj, where ψiα (1) re the wve-function mplitudes for n electron αβ with spin α on lttice site i nd Hij is the Hmiltonin mtri descriing the QSHE0,1 On the other hnd, the dnmics of collection of clssicl hrmonic oscilltors is descried Newton s eqution of motion i = Dij j, () where i re the coordintes of N pendul (i = 1,, N ) nd Dij is the dnmicl mtri contining the couplings etween them For either sstem, the eistence nd properties of the edge modes re fetures of the eigensttes of H or D lone nd depend neither on the interprettion of ψiα versus i, nor on the nture of the dnmics, ie, i t versus t Hence, we im to design dnmicl mtri D incorporting the properties of the QSHE c FIG 1: Setup, Illustrtion of two pendul mking up one effective site of our lttice model Si springs re ttched to ech pendulum for the coupling to its nerest neighors, Schemtic (top) view of the different tpes of couplings Ech green rectngle depicts logicl site hosting n nd pendulum swinging in the direction of the rrows The longitudinl couplings re simple springs connecting the pendul Trnsverse couplings re chieved vi one or two lever rms, depending on the required sign of the coupling (see App A) c, Our 9 15 lttice mde of 70 pendul The two helicl edge sttes known from the quntum spin Hll effect re indicted in lue nd red

3 3 L R Splitting rtio Splitting rtio c - π - π / 0 π/ π Angle FIG 3: Bem splitter, Geometr of the em splitter An ritrr polriztion is injected t the indicted site t 13 Hz The reltive weights A on the two shded oes (R/L) define splitting rtio, Splitting rtio on the Bloch sphere The north (south) pole of the sphere corresponds to left (right) circulr polriztions of the drive nd the color indictes the splitting rtio The colormp is n interpoltion sed on 7000 dt points The miml splitting is not reched t the poles, indicting the presence of disorder The dots mrk mesurements long gret circle through the points of miml splitting c, Splitting rtio long the gret circle The lck line mrks cosine epected for n optiml em-splitter The mimll reched splitting is 9980(4)% ddition of digonl term µ Second, D hs to e strictl non-imginr, s it encodes idel springs Owing to the time-reversl smmetr, this cn e ttined unitr trnsformtion comining the locl Krmers pirs α = ± ( ) r,s = 1 r,s ( ) ( 1 i ψ + r,s 1 i ψr,s }{{} =u ), U = u 1 lttice Ech of the new coordintes r,s nd r,s descries onedimensionl oscilltor t lttice site (r, s) In the following, we interpret ( r,s, r,s ) s the coordintes of twodimensionl pendulum It is then evident from the structure of u tht the eigenmodes of the sstem chrcterized α = ± correspond to left nd right circulrl polrized motions Hence, these two polriztions replce the notion of pseudo-spin up nd down of the quntum mechnicl prolem We implement the dnmicl mtri D = U HU using pendul s depicted in Fig 1 D inherits its structure from the Lndu guge in Eq (3): In s-direction, there is no cross-coupling etween r,s nd r,s±1 (no Peierls phse in H) Along the r-direction, D lso mies the - nd -degrees of freedom with strength tht depends on the r-coordinte (see App A) The totl sstem consists of 70 pendul in lttice of L r L s = 9 15 sites The re eigenfrequencies of the pendul due to grvit is ω 0 /π 075 Hz, which chnges with the restoring forces of the spring couplings to ω/π 34 Hz (see App A) We hrmonicll ecite one lttice site with welldefined polriztion forcing the position of the two pendul B trcking the position of ll pendul one cn etrct the two-dimensionl trces [ r,s (t), r,s (t)] From these we otin the men deflection A r,s s well s the polriztion (left hnded, liner or right hnded) relted to the lg etween the nd pendulum (see App D), cf Fig () To estlish the eistence of the edge sttes, we scn the frequenc t which one edge site is ecited For ever frequenc we wit until the sstem reches sted stte efore we etrct the totl response χ = r,s A r,s/n, where N is the numer of sites Figure (d) shows tht the sstem responds pprecil etween 17 Hz nd 9 Hz, s epected (see App A) Moreover, there re two regions with sequences of pronounced peks The width of these peks is Γ 004 Hz, indicting the dmping of the oscilltors In order to mke the connection to edge modes we seprte the sstem into the outermost line of lttice sites χ e = edge A r,s/n edge nd the rest χ = ulk A r,s/n ulk The reltive weight χ e /(χ + χ e ) is shown in Fig (e) There re three nds where the response lies minl in the ulk which re seprted two frequenc regions where the response is dominted the edge To illustrte this further, we show in Fig () & (c) the recorded mode structure t ulk nd n edge frequenc, respectivel Given the nlog to the QSHE effect, we epect the edge sttes to e helicl The edge spectrum ω(k), where k is the wve vector long the edge, cn e etrcted from the sted sttes shown in Fig (c): Beond A r,s nd the polriztion, we determine the position of ech twodimensionl oscilltor t given time [ r,s (t 0 ), r,s (t 0 )] The ngle of this vector with respect to the positive - direction defines locl phse φ r,s, cf Fig () The chnge k = φ r,s+1 φ r,s defines the wve vector in units of the inverse lttice constnt We show the resulting edge dispersions ω(k) in Fig (g) For ech polriztion, there is chirl (tht is, uni-directionl) mode per gp, s epected The edge dispersion indictes tht the clssicl sstem fithfull implements the QSHE However, the edge stte of the QSHE re protected the smmetr T In the mechnicl cse, this smmetr is not relted to time reversl Insted D is onl smmetric under T if the rtios of the locl couplings re correctl implemented Hence, disorder in the spring constnts induces oth T -reking terms tht cn remove the edge modes s well s enign disorder effects which onl remove left- nd right circulr polriztion s glol integrl of motion For clen sstem, linerl polrized ecittion on oundr site is split into two counter-propgting circulrl polrized modes Therefore the edge sttes cn e used s polrizing em splitter T -smmetr reking diminishes the efficienc of the em splitter coupling the two polriztions T -smmetric disorder, on the other hnd, onl leds to selection of different polriztions in the splitting process We mesured the rtio of ecittion L A r,s/ R A r,s etween the left nd the right long edge fter eciting in
4 4 c d e f Position in mm Time in s t 0 σ 10 σ Normlized mplitude t Time in s right liner left Polriztion FIG 4: Topologicl protection -d, Sted sttes with sequence of removed sites illustrting the stilit of the edge sttes ginst oundr roughness The ottom right site is driven with liner polriztion t frequenc in the upper gp e, Wve pckets lunched t the mrked site with liner polriztion t frequenc in the lower gp Ech clock represents n edge site on which the lue (red) wedge is centered t the time t 0 when the wve pcket trverses the site The ngle of the wedge indictes the width σ of the wve pcket s illustrted in pnel f The color represents its polriztion From these clocks one cn red off the propgtion of the wvepckets throughout the sstem f, Anlsis of the wve-pcket t given site from which the pssing time t 0 nd the width of the wve-pcket σ re etrcted the middle of short edge (Fig 3()) We scnned ll possile polriztions chnging the reltive mplitude nd time-lg etween the two locl pendul In nlog to the quntum mechnicl cse, we plot the splitting rtio s colormp on Bloch sphere, where the north pole (south pole) corresponds to right (left) circulr polriztion of the drive, respectivel The miml imlnce etween the left nd right edge re not reched on the north (south) pole, ut on two pproimtel ntipodl points rotted 15 w from the poles (see Fig 3()) However, s illustrted in Fig 3(c), we rech splitting fidelit of 9980(4)% t the optiml points From this we conclude tht on the length-scle of our sstem, onl disorder smmetric under time reversl is relevnt (see App E) Surfce sttes in mechnicl sstems with concve oundries re known s whispering gller modes 10,11 To demonstrte tht our edge sttes re not mere whispering gller modes nd to highlight the roustness of the phononic edge sttes descried here, we remove sequence of sites from the dnmicl prolem, effectivel creting conve oundr In Fig 4() (d), we show the resulting mode structure for frequenc in the lower gp The result demonstrtes tht the ect shpe of the oundr hs no influence on the stilit of the edge sttes, in contrst to whispering-gller modes, which re equisitel sensitive to imperfections To further strengthen the point tht the edge sttes re topologicl rther thn imposed the finite-size geometr, we crete domin wll etween two different topologicl sectors We invert the effective flu seen the two polriztions on si rows of the sstem (see App A) At the oundr etween the two sectors, the spin Chern numers chnge their vlues, which requires the presence of in-gp modes We illustrte these topologicl in-gp modes long the sector oundries eciting linerl polrized wve-pcket on the short edge of the lrger sector There we lso demonstrte the unique ilit, owing to the long timescles in our eperiments, to investigte dnmicl rther thn sted-stte properties As shown in Fig 4(e), the wve pcket splits into two circulrl polrized pckets, ech trveling long one edge At the oundr to the second sector, the re deflected into the interior of the lttice (where the interfere to linerl polrized wve-pcket gin), efore the ech trvel independentl long the phsicl edge of the second sector in reversed directions In this work, we hve relized mechnicl topologicl insultor displing the phenomenolog of the QSHE Our results show tht the topologicll protected edge sttes re oservle in mechnicl sstem despite the presence of disorder nd dec processes For potentil technologicl pplictions, the ilit to define edge sttes long domin-wlls etween different topologicl sectors is prticulrl promising B stcking different domins, where the length of the domin wlls cn e controlled the precise shpe of the interfce, stle coustic del lines cn e engineered 16 Moreover, the work presented here estlishes the ridge etween the quntum mechnicl phenomen of topologicl insultors nd mechnicl sstems The outlook to implement the coustic counter-prt of three-dimensionl topologicl insultors is peculirl interesting We would like to thnk T Donner, T Esslinger, P Mletinsk, EPL vn Nieuwenurg, M Tovmsn, nd O Zilererg for discussions Specil thnks go to C Drio for pointing out the technologicl relevnce of our work We cknowledge finncil support from the Swiss Ntionl Foundtion
