1 First non-trivi upper bound on the circur chromtic number of the pne. Konstnty Junosz-Szniwski, Fcuty of Mthemtics nd Informtion Science, Wrsw University of Technoogy, Pond Abstrct rxiv: v1 [mth.co] 5 Jun 015 We consider circur version of the fmous Neson-Hdwiger probem. It is know tht 4 coors re necessry nd 7 coors suffice to coor the euciden pne in such wy tht points t distnce one get different coors. In r-circur cooring we ssign rcs of ength one of circe with perimeter r in such wy tht points t distnce one get disjoint rcs. In this pper we show the existence of r-circur cooring for r = It is the first resut with r-circur cooring of the pne with r smer thn 7. We so show r-circur cooring of the pne with r < 7 in the cse when we require disjoint rcs for points t distnce beonging to the intern [ 10 11, 1 11 ]. 1 Introduction We refer to the fmous Neson-Hdwiger probem nd we studied cooring mode - circur cooring. The Neson Hdwiger probem is the question for the chromtic number of the euciden pne, which is the minimum number of coors required to coor the pne in such wy tht no two points t distnce 1 from ech other hve the sme coor. The exct number is not known. We ony know tht t est 4 coors re needed [5] nd 7 coors suffice []. For comprehensive history of the Hdwiger-Neson probem see monogrph [7]. An r-circur cooring of grph G = (V, E) is function c : V [0, r) such tht for ny edge uv of G hods 1 c(u) c(v) r 1. Notice tht n r-circur cooring cn be seen s n ssignment of rcs of ength 1 of circe with perimeter r to vertices of G in such wy tht djcent vertices get disjoint rcs. The circur chromtic number of grph G is the number χ c (G) = inf{r R : there exists r-circur cooring of G}. Circur cooring ws first introduced by Vince [8]. For survey see pper by Zhu [9]. Circur cooring ppies in scheduing theory, to minimize the verge time of process, tht re repeted mny times. It is known ([8]) tht the circur chromtic number does not exceed chromtic number, but is bigger thn the chromtic number minus one, formy χ c (G) (χ(g) 1, χ(g)] for ny grph G. In this pper we consider the circur cooring of the pne. Precisey the circur cooring of infinite grph G 0, with the set of points in the pne s the vertex set nd the set of pirs of points t distnce one s the set of edges. If we combine known bounds for the chromtic number of the grph G 0 with properties of the circur chromtic number we obtin < χ c (G 0 ) 7. The ower bound cn be improved by compring with nother interesting prmeter - frction chromtic number. To define it we need to define first j-fod 1
2 cooring of the pne. A function is j-fod cooring if it ssigns j-eement set of ntur numbers to the vertices of grph G in such wy tht djcent vertices get disjoint sets. The frction chromtic number of G is defined by χ f (G) = inf{ k j : there exists j-fod cooring of G using k coors.} It is known [9] tht the frction chromtic number does not exceed circur chromtic number. The best known ower bound for the frction chromtic number of G 0 is 9.55 nd it cn be found in the book of Scheinermn nd Umn [6]. This gives us ower bound on the circur chromtic number of the pne. DeVos, Ebrhimi, Ghebeh, Goddyn, Mohr, Nsersr [1] improved this bound by showing tht the chromtic number of the pne is t est 4. In this pper we give first non-trivi upper bound on the circur chromtic number of the pne. Exoo considered more restricted cooring of the pne in []. He sked for the minimum number of coors to coor the pne in such wy tht ny points in t distnce beonging to given interv [1 ɛ, 1 + ɛ] get different coors. For ɛ = 0 the probem reduces to Neson-Hdwiger probem. The frction nd the j-fod Exoo type cooring ws studied in [4]. The method of circur cooring of the pne presented in this pper cn be dpted to Exoo type cooring of the pne. Min resuts Let us introduce some definitions nd nottion. For (x 1, y 1 ), (x, y ) R by d((x 1, y 1 ), (x, y )) = (x1 x ) + (y 1 y ) we denote the euciden distnce. For x R nd R + we define x = x nd (x) = x x. Notice tht for = 1 function x is the stndrd foor function x. By G ε we denote n infinite grph with the vertex set R nd the set of edges {(x 1, y 1 )(x, y ) : d((x 1, y 1 ), (x, y )) [1 ε, 1+ε]}. Our min resut is the first non trivi bound on the circur chromtic number of the pne in sense defined in Neson-Hdwiger probem i.e. on χ c (G 0 ). Theorem 1. χ c (G 0 ) Proof. We not ony give the bound on the circur chromtic number but ctuy present the (4 + 4 )- circur cooring of the pne. Let = + nd et r = = Let us strt with some intuition on the construction r-circur cooring of the pne. Let R denote rectnge [0, ) [0, 1 ). We define r-circur cooring of the rectnge R by c(x, y) = x, (where (x, y) R). Then we extend this cooring in circur wy on strip S = R [0, 1 ). We simpy join copies of the rectnge R by their vertic sides so they form strip S. Ech copy of R is coored in the sme wy s the origin rectnge R. Then we tke copies of the strip S nd join them with horizont sides. Ech strip S is coored
3 in the sme wy, but we shift ech copy of S by (1 + ) to the right compring with the strip beow (see Figures 1-). Figure 1: Prtition of the pne into copies of rectnge R Figure : (4 + 4 )-circur cooring of the pne, bck nd white Formy the r-circur cooring of the grph G0 is defined by: c(x, y) = x ( + )byc 1 ` To prove tht c is circur cooring of G0 we show tht for ny pir of points (x1, y1 ) nd (x, y ) t distnce 1 the the condition 1 c(x1, y1 ) c(x, y ) r 1 is fufied. Without oss of generity we ssume
4 Figure : (4 + 4 )-circur cooring of the pne, coor tht c(x1, y1 ) c(x, y ) i.e (x1 (+ )by1 c 1 )` (x (+ )by c 1 )`. Let (x01, y10 ) = (x1 x, y1 by c 1 ) nd (x0, y0 ) = (0, y by c 1 ). Notice tht d((x01, y10 ), (x0, y0 )) = d((x1, y1 ), (x, y )). Moreover using fct tht fct tht by by1 c 1 c 1 = by c 1 by1 c 1 nd ( b)` = ()` (b)` for ()` (b)` we obtin: (x1 x ( + )by1 by c 1 c 1 )` 0 = = = (x1 x ( + )(by1 c 1 by c 1 ))` = (x1 ( + )by1 c 1 (x ( + ))by c 1 ))` = (x1 ( + )by1 c 1 ))` (x ( + )by c 1 )` = c(x1, y1 ) c(x, y ) = c(x01, y10 ) c(x0, y0 ) Therefore without oss of generity we my ssume tht x = 0 nd y [0, 1 ). Rec tht d((x1, y1 ), (x, y )) = 1. 4 ]. Consider foowing cses: 0, x1 > 0. In this cse x1 (, 1] nd c(x1, y1 ) (1, ] [1, + 4 ] 0, x1 < 0. For sm vues of ε the number χ c (G ε ) is stricty smer thn the known bound on the cssic chromtic number of G ε. Theorem. For ε 1 (5 6 71) hods χ c (G ε ) ε ε 10ε + < 7 Proof. The proof is nogous to the prove of Theorem 1. We prtition the pne into copies of rectnge, nd coor ech copy in the sme wy. The difference is the size of rectnge nd the fctor in the cooring function. Let = + ε + ε 4+4ε 10ε +, r = 4 + ε. To prove the Theorem we define r-circur 10ε+ cooring of the G ɛ by : c(x, y) = ( ( ) ) x 1 + ε 10ε + y 1+ε ε 10ε ε To mke formus shorter et = 1 ε 10ε +. Then r = 4 + +ε c(x, y) = 1 ( ) x (1 + ε + ) y 1+ε. 1 + ε To prove tht c is circur cooring of G ε we show tht for ny pir of points (x 1, y 1 ) nd (x, y ) t distnce in [1 ε, 1 + ε] the condition 1 c(x 1, y 1 ) c(x, y ) r 1 hods. Without oss of generity we ssume tht c(x 1, y 1 ) c(x, y ) i.e ( x 1 (1 + ε + ) ) ( 1 + ε y 1 1+ε x (1 + ε + ) nd ) 1 + ε y 1+ε Let (x 1, y 1) = (x 1 x, y 1 y 1+ε ) nd (x, y ) = (0, y y 1+ε ). Notice tht d((x 1, y 1), (x, y )) = d((x 1, y 1 ), (x, y )). Moreover, simiry s in the proof bove, one cn prove c(x 1, y 1) c(x, y ) = c(x 1, y 1 ) c(x, y ). Therefore without oss of generity we my ssume tht x = 0 nd y [0, 1+ε ). Rec tht d((x 1, y 1 ), (x, y )) [1 ε, 1+ε]. It remins to prove tht c(x 1, y 1 ) c(x, y ) = c(x 1, y 1 ) [1, r 1].
