Covarant Theory of Gravtaton n the Spacetme wth nsler Structure Xn-Bng Huang Shangha Unted Center for Astrophyscs (SUCA), arxv: v1 [gr-qc] 31 Oct 2007 Shangha Normal Unversty, No.100 Guln Road, Shangha , Chna Abstract The theory of gravtaton n the spacetme wth nsler structure s constructed. It s shown that the theory keeps general covarance. Such theory reduces to Ensten s general relatvty when the nsler structure s Remannan. Therefore, ths covarant theory of gravtaton s an elegant realzaton of Ensten s thoughts on gravtaton n the spacetme wth nsler structure. 2 1 Introducton In Newtonan mechancs, the spacetme s treated as a three-dmensonal Eucldean space and an ndependent one-dmensonal tme. To solve the contradcton between the Newtonan spacetme and the Maxwell s electromagnetc theory, Ensten proposed the Mnkowskan spacetme n hs specal relatvty. urthermore, Ensten ntroduced four-dmensonal Remannan spacetme n hs gravtatonal feld theory. After that, large amount of astronomcal observatons have shown that our spacetme s curved. Hence, the hstory of physcs demonstrates that the geometry of our spacetme should be decded by the astronomcal observatons and the physcal experments. At present our fundamental feld theores are nvarant under tme reversal. But our everyday feelngs tell us that there do exst a tme arrow by whch our world, our lfe and everythng are controlled. So the drecton of tme should play a role n our theory on spacetme structure. The recent dffcultes encountered n solvng dark energy problems also hnt that the geometry of our spacetme may be not Remannan but ts generalzed case nsler geometry. In ths paper, we try to construct a covarant feld theory of gravtaton n the spacetme wth the nsler structure. We hope that ths theory wll provde a new powerful platform for solvng the problems appeared n modern cosmology. The paper s organzed as follows: The nsler structure n four-dmensonal spacetme s ntroduced, and by whch the fundamental tensor and the Cartan tensor are nduced n Secton 2. In Secton 3 we ntroduce the Chern connecton, whch s the elegant mathematcal tools n nsler geometry. The curvatures of Chern connecton are dscussed, and several knds of Banch denttes are gven n Secton 4. We ntroduce a new tensor Z k (x, y) n Secton 5, by whch a curvature-lke tensor H kl (x, y) s ntroduced. The covarant feld equatons of gravtaton are acqured n ths secton also. In the last secton, we dscuss the strong constrant gven by the conservaton of the energy-momentum tensor. The vertcal covarant dervatve of the tensor Z k (x, y) 2
s dscussed also. 2 nsler Structure n four-dmensonal Spacetme or the spacetme of physcs we need four coordnates, the tme t and three physcal space coordnates x 1, x 2, x 3. We put t = x 0, so that the four coordnates may be wrtten x, where the ndce takes on the four values 0, 1, 2, 3. Mathematcally suppose that four-dmensonal spacetme can be treated as a C manfold, denoted by M. Denote by T x M the tangent space at x M, and by TM := x M T x M the tangent bundle of M. Each element of TM has the form (x, y), where x M and y T x M. The natural proecton π : TM M s gven by π(x, y) := x. The dual space of T x M s Tx M, called the cotangent space at x. The unon T M := x M Tx M s the cotangent bundle. Therefore, { x } and {dx } are, respectvely, the nduced coordnate bases for T x M and T xm. The sad x gve rse to local coordnates (x, y ) on TM through the mechansm y = y x. (1) The y are fberwse global. So functons (x, y) that are defned on TM can be locally expressed as (x 0, x 1, x 2, x 3 ; y 0, y 1, y 2, y 3 ). In Ref.[1] a nsler structure of an n-dmensonal C manfold s gven from the mathematcal pont of vew. Smlarly a nsler Structure functon of the four-dmensonal spacetme can be defned globally : TM (, + ) (2) wth the followng propertes: In ths paper, the rules that govern our ndex gymnastcs are as follows: 1. Vector ndces are up, and covector ndces are down. 2. Any repeated par of ndces provded that one s up and the other s down s automatcally summed. 3. The rasng and lowerng of ndces are carred out by the matrx g defned by equaton (3), and ts matrx nverse g. 3
1. Regularty: (x, y) s C on the entre slt tangent bundle TM o := TM\{0}. 2. Postve homogenety: (x, λy) = λ(x, y) for all λ > The components of fundamental tensor: where g (x, y) := [ (x, y)] [ (x, y)] y y := 1 2 y y, (3) 2 2 (x, y) y y. (4) In nsler geometry, the y (or x ) appear n downstars ndces usually denote the partal dervatves wth respect to the y (or x ). In the spacetme wth nsler structure, the components of fundamental tensor can be decomposed by ntroducng the tetrad matrx e a (x, y) n local coordnates g (x, y) = e a (x, y)e b (x, y)η ab. (5) we adopt the same sgn conventons as that used by Wenberg s book[2]. The metrc tensor of local Mnkowskan spacetme η ab s wrtten as follows η 00 = 1, η 11 = η 22 = η 33 = +1, η ab = 0 for a b, (6) whch s not postve-defnte. Gven a nsler structure (x, y) on the tangent bundle of four-dmensonal spacetme M, the par (M, ) can be called a nsler spacetme. In mathematcal books on nsler geometry, the nsler structure functon satsfes 0 and the fundamental matrx g (x, y) be postve-defnte at every pont of TM o. But n the case of four-dmensonal spacetme, the tangent space s a Mnkowskan spacetme, therefore (x, y) may not satsfy (x, y) 0 and g (x, y) s not postvedefnte ether. Now we need the mathematcal content of the pulled-back bundle π TM or ts dual π T M, Here we don t explan how to construct ths bundle, for more detaled 4
dscussons on the pulled-back bundle π TM or ts dual π T M, please read Chapter 2 n Ref.[1]. or ease of local computatons, t s to our advantage to work on an affne parameter space, where spacetme coordnates are readly avalable. In ths case, the preferred base manfold s the slt tangent bundle TM o. A good number of geometrcal obects are sectons of the pulled-back bundle π TM or ts dual π T M, or ther tensor products. These st over TM o and not M. Local coordnates {x } on M produce the bass sectons { x } and {dx }, respectvely, for T x M and T xm. Now, over each pont (x, y) on the manfold TM o, the fber of π TM s the vector space T x M whle that of π T M s the covector space Tx M. Thus, the x and dx gve rse to sectons of the pulled-back bundles, n a rather smple-mnded way. In the pulled-back bundles these sectons are defned locally n x and globally n y. Ths global nature n y s automatc because once x s fxed, these sectons do not change as we vary y. Hence a dstngushed secton l of π TM can be defned by l = l (x,y) := y = y (x, y) x =: l x. (7) Its natural dual s the Hlbert form ω, whch s a secton of π T M. We have ω = ω (x,y) := y (x, y)dx = y dx. (8) The defnton (7) ndcates that the components l of the dstngushed secton l satsfy l = y. Accordng to Euler s theorem n Ref.[1], t s obvous that l := g (x, y)l = y (x, y). (9) Thus the Hlbert form ω s expressble as ω = l dx. Both l and ω are globally defned on the manfold TM o. The asserted dualty means that whch s a consequence of Euler s theorem too. ω(l) = y y = 1, (10) The pulled-back vector bundle π TM admts a natural Remannan metrc g = g dx dx, (11) 5
where the components of g s defned by equaton (3), obvously g = y y + y y and g = g. Ths s the fundamental tensor, whch determnes the basc propertes of the nsler spacetme. It s a symmetrc secton of π T M π T M. Lkewse, another mportant tensor n the nsler spacetme s the Cartan tensor A = A k dx dx dx k, (12) where the components s gven by A k := 2 g y k = 4 [ ] 2, (13) yyyk whch s a totally symmetrc secton of π T M π T M π T M. Mathematcally the obect C k := A k = 1 g (14) 2 y k s called the Cartan tensor n the geometrc lterature at large. 3 Chern Connecton and Covarant Dervatves The components g of the fundamental tensor defned n equaton (3) are functons on TM o, and are nvarant under the postve rescalng n y. We use them to defne the formal Chrstoffel symbols of the second knd γ k := gm 2 ( gmk x + g m x g ) k k x m, (15) where g s the matrx nverse of g, and also the quanttes N := γ ky k C kγ k rsy r y s. (16) The above quanttes N can be reexpressed as follows whch s nvarant under the postve rescalng y λy. N := γ k lk A k γk rs lr l s, (17) 6
Let [ x = x ( x 0, x 1, x 2, x 3 ), = 0, 1, 2, 3 ] be a change of coordnates on spacetme. Correspondngly, the chan rule gves y = x x ỹ. (18) The tangent bundle of the manfold TM has a local coordnate bass that conssts of the x and the y. However, under the transformaton on TM nduced by a coordnate change x x, the vector x transforms n a complcated manner as follows: x = x x x + 2 x x x k ỹk On the other hand, the vector y transforms smply y. (19) ỹ = x x y. (20) The cotangent bundle of the manfold T M has a local coordnate bass {dx, dy }. Here, under the sad coordnate change, the dx behave smply whle the dy transform complcatedly dỹ = x x dy + d x = x x dx (21) 2 x x x k yk dx. (22) To avod the complexty n the transformaton equatons (19) and (22), furthermore, to obtan the coordnate bases that transform as tensor under the sad coordnate change, Ref.[1] ntroduces two new symbols δ and δy δx δ are defned by δx and the δy are gven by δy δ := δx x to replace and dy respectvely. The x N y, (23) := 1 ( dy + N dx ), (24) 7
whch s nvarant under postve rescalng n y. Note that δ δx y natural dual dx, natural dual δy. Therefore, we ust ntroduce two new natural bases that are dual to each other: 1, the bases { δ, } for the tangent bundle of TM δx y o ; 2, the bases {dx, δy } for the cotangent bundle of TM o. The Ref.[1] ndcates that the horzontal subspace spanned by the δ δx s orthogonal to the vertcal subspace spanned by the y. The Chern connecton s a lnear connecton that acts on the pulled-back vector bundle π TM, sttng over the manfold TM o. It s not a connecton on the bundle TM over M. Nevertheless, t serves nsler geometry n a manner that parallels what the Lev-Cvta connecton (Chrstoffel symbol) does for Remannan geometry. Here we cte Chern theorem on Chern connecton n Ref.[1] n the followng. Chern Theorem: Let (M,) be a nsler manfold. The pulled-back bundle π TM admts a unque lnear connecton, called the Chern connecton. Its connecton forms are characterzed by the structural equatons: 1. Torson freeness: d(dx ) dx ω = dx ω = 0. (25) 2. Almost g-compatblty: dg g k ω k g k ω k = 2 A m δy m. (26) In fact, The torson freeness s equvalent to the absence of dy k terms n ω, that s to say together wth the symmetry ω = Γ k dxk, (27) Γ k = Γ k. (28) 8
urthermore, almost metrc-compatblty mples that Γ k = γ k gl ( A lm N m k + A klm N m A km N m l ). (29) Equvalently, Γ k = gl 2 ( δglk δx + δg l δx k δg ) k δx l where the operators δ δx have been defned by equaton (23)., (30) Usng the Chern connecton, the covarant dervatves of the tensors that are the sectons of the pulled-back bundle π TM or ts dual π T M, or ther tensor product can be calculated. or nstance, let T := T x dx be an arbtrary smooth (1, 1)-type tensor, whch sts on the manfold TM o. Its covarant dfferental s T := ( T) x dx, (31) where ( T) s ( T) := dt T k ω k + T k ω k. (32) The components ( T) are 1-forms on TM o. They are therefore be expanded n terms of the natural bass {dx } and { δy }, set ( T) = T k dxk + T ;k δy k, (33) where T k s the horzontal covarant dervatve of ( T) and T ;k s the vertcal covarant dervatve of ( T) respectvely. In order to obtan formulas for the coeffcents, we evaluate equaton (33) on each ndvdual member of the dual bass { δ δx, y }. We also use the fact that the Chern connecton forms for the natural bass have no δyk terms, and are gven by equaton (27). Therefore the results are T k = T ;k = ( δ δx k ( y k ) T T ) = δt δx k + T l Γ lk T lγ l k, (34) = T y k. (35) The treatment for tensor felds of hgher or lower rank s smlar. Here we lst the covarant dervatves of several mportant tensors. rst Chern theorem says that the 9
Chern connecton s almost g-compatble, namely ( g) = dg g k ω k g k ω k = 2 A l δy l. (36) Ths shows that the covarant dervatves of fundamental tensor are g l = 0, (37) g ;l = 2 A l. (38) The obvous equatons (g g k ) l = 0 and (g g k ) ;l = 0 yeld g l = 0, g ;l = 2A l. (39) Secondly, the covarant dervatves of the dstngushed l are l = 0, (40) l ; = δ l l. (41) These, together wth (37) and (38), can then be used to deduce that l = 0, (42) l ; = g l l. (43) Those covarant dervatves wll be used n the process of constructng the feld equatons of gravtaton. 4 Curvature and Banch Identtes The curvature 2-forms of the Chern connecton are Ω := dω ω k ωk. (44) Snce the Ω are 2-forms on the manfold TM o, Chern proved that they can be expanded as Ω = 1 2 R kl dxk dx l + P kl dxk δyl. (45) 10
The obects R, P are respectvely the hh, hv curvature tensors of the Chern connecton. The wedge product dx k dx l n above equaton demonstrates that R kl = R lk. (46) The frst Banch denttes deduced from the torson freeness of the Chern connecton uncovers a symmetry on P kl and the frst Banch dentty for R kl P kl = P k l (47) R kl + R k l + R l k = 0. (48) In natural coordnates, formulas for R kl and P kl are expressed n terms of the Chern connecton Γ k as follows R kl = δγ l δx k δγ k δx l + Γ hkγ h l Γ hlγ h k, (49) and Note that equatons (28) and (50) mply (47). P kl = Γ k y l. (50) The Chern connecton s almost metrc-compatble. Usng ths property, some Banch denttes are found. After exteror dfferentaton on equaton (26) and some manpulatons, we get Ω + Ω = 1 2 (R kl + R kl ) dx k dx l + (P kl + P kl ) dx k δyl = (A u R u kl) dx k dx l 2(A u P u kl + A l k ) dx k δyl + 2(A k;l A k l l ) δyk δyl. (51) Here, we have ntroduced the abbrevatons R kl := l R kl. (52) P kl := l P kl. (53) 11
There are three denttes that one can obtan from above equaton (51). We carry them out systematcally. The coeffcents of the dx k dx l terms n (51) tell us that R kl + R kl = 2 A u R u kl. (54) The coeffcents of the dx k δyl terms n (51) tell us that P kl + P kl = 2 A u P u kl 2 A l k. (55) Apply (55) three tmes to the combnaton (P kl + P kl ) (P kl + P kl ) + (P kl + P kl ). (56) Through some operaton, the result takes the form P kl = (A l k A kl + A kl ) (A u P u kl A ku P u l + A ku P u l). (57) Contract ths equaton wth l, respectvely, adopt (40) and the facts P k lk = 0, l A k = 0, we then reduces the contracton to the mportant statement P kl := l P kl = A kl. (58) Here, Ȧ kl := A kl m l m. (59) Then (57) and (58) together lead to the consttutve relaton for P kl P kl = (A l k A kl + A kl ) + (A u ormula (58) can be used to reexpress equaton (55) as Ȧ ukl A u A ul + A u A ul ). (60) k k A l k = A u Ȧ ukl 1 2 (P kl + P kl ). (61) nally, the coeffcents of the δyk δyl terms n (51) gves A k;l A l;k = A k l l A l l k. (62) 12
So we have dscussed all formulas taken from (51). Exteror dfferentaton of (44) gves the second Banch dentty dω ω k Ω k + ω k Ω k = 0. (63) Wth (27) and (45), one can expand the above equaton as follows 0 = 1 2 ( ) R kl t P kur u lt dx k dx l dx t ( ) R kl;t 2 P kt l + 2 P kuȧu lt dx k dx l δyt + ( P kl;t P kll t ) dx k δyl δyt. The above equaton s equvalent to the followng three denttes: R kl t + R lt k + R tk l = P kur u lt + P lur u tk + P tur u kl, (64) R kl;t = P kt l P lt k ( P ku A u lt P luȧu kt), (65) P kl;t P kt;l = P kl l t P kt l l. (66) Makng use of (40), Contractng (64) wth l, one can obtan R kl t + R lt k + R tk l = A kur u lt A lur u tk A tur u kl. (67) In general relatvty, Ensten used the second Banch dentty n Remannan geometry to deduce the mportant Ensten tensor, the contracton of whose covarant dervatve s vanshed. As we wll show, the second Banch dentty n nsler geometry also plays an mportant role n buldng the elegant feld equatons of gravtaton. 5 The eld Equatons of Gravtaton n nsler Spacetme We fnd that a tensor Z k (x, y)dx dx dx k s necessary n constructng the covarant feld equatons of gravtaton. The tensor Z k (x, y)dx dx dx k s descrbed by Z l k = Z u Ȧ u kl P kl. (68) 13
By comparng (61) wth (68), we obtan a smple relatonshp A k = 1 2 (Z k + Z k ). (69) Above equaton shows that Z k (x, y)dx dx dx k s closely related wth the Cartan tensor A k (x, y)dx dx dx k. We ntroduce a curvature-lke tensor H kl as follows H kl := R kl + Z u R u kl, (70) whch s a combnaton of hh-curvature tensor R kl and an addtonal revsed-curvature tensor Z u R u kl. The defnton (70) and formula (54) tell us that H kl = H kl. (71) The defnton (70) and formula (46) tell us that H kl = H lk. (72) In the curvature-lke tensor H kl, the second Banch dentty on R kl has been gven, namely equaton (64). Now we try to fnd a smlar dentty on Z u Ru kl. rst ( ) Z u Ru kl t = Z u t Ru kl + Z u Ru kl t. (73) Apply (73) three tmes to the followng combnaton ( ) Z u Ru kl t + ( ) Z u Ru lt k + ( ) Z u Ru tk l. (74) Wth the help of (67), (68) and (73), we can get the result of expresson (74) as follows ( ) Z ur u kl t + ( ) Z ur u lt k + ( ) Z ur u tk l = P ku Ru lt P lu Ru tk P tu Ru kl. (75) Therefore, combnng (64) wth (75), we have an mportant dentty H kl t + H lt k + H tk l = 0. (76) 14
We shall be partcularly concerned wth the contracted form of (76). Recallng that the horzontal covarant dervatves of g l vansh, we fnd on contracton of wth l that H k t H t k + H tk = 0, (77) where we have adopted the defnton H k := g l H kl = H k. (79) Contractng equaton (77) agan gves H t H t H t = 0, (80) or where the scalar H s ( H t 1 ) 2 δ t H = 0, (81) An equvalent but more famlar form for (81) s H := g H = H. (82) ( H t 1 ) 2 gt H = 0. (83) In general relatvty, the energy-momentum tensor T s conserved to make sure the conservaton of energy and momentum [2]. Smlarly, we ntroduce the energymomentum tensor T (x, y)dx dx n the manfold π TM. The covarant dervatves of the energy-momentum tensor are ( T ) = T k dxk + T ;k δy k, (84) We strongly feel that H k satsfy H k = H k, but tll now we cannot prove t. But we beleve that geometers can fnd t. If not, we have to redefne H kl as follows H kl := 1 2 ( Rkl + R kl + Z u R u kl + Z klu R u ). (78) Ths re-defnton wll not change our feld equatons. But the theory wll be slghtly ugly. 15
where T k are the horzontal covarant dervatves of T (x, y) and T ;k are the vertcal covarant dervatves of T (x, y). When the nsler structure s Remannan, T ;k vansh, and the horzontal covarant dervatves T k become the covarant dervatves of the energy-momentum tensor. Therefore, from the physcal pont of vew, the energy and momentum conservaton can be kept when the horzontal covarant dervatves T k of the energy-momentum tensor satsfy T = 0. (85) rankly speakng, we stll do not understand the physcal meanng of the vertcal covarant dervatves of the energy-momentum tensor. Wth the energy-momentum tensor T (x, y) sttng over the nsler spacetme, when ts horzontal dervatves satsfy (85), we propose the covarant feld equatons of gravtaton as follows H 1 2 g H = 8π G T, (86) where G s the Newtonan constant. Obvously, (83) makes sure that the energymomentum tensor n (86) satsfes (85). Therefore, the feld equatons (86) do reserve the energy and momentum conservaton. Obvously, for the empty spacetme, the energy-momentum tensor n (86) dsappears, the feld equatons of gravtaton reduce to H = 0. (87) When the nsler structure s Remannan, the tensor Z k vanshes and the curvaturelke tensor H kl becomes the Remannan curvature tensor of Remannan spacetme, our feld equatons becomes Ensten s feld equatons exactly. Therefore, our covarant feld equatons of gravtaton n the nsler spacetme are the natural result of Ensten s thoughts on gravtaton. 16
6 More Dscussons The equaton (84) demonstrates that the energy-momentum conservaton n nsler spacetme can be dvded nto two knds. rst, the weak energy-momentum conservaton, used n last secton. In ths knd of energy-momentum conservaton, we requre that T = 0, the feld equatons of gravtaton has been dscussed. Secondly, the strong energy-momentum conservaton, we call, that s, both T and T ; vansh. The constrant condton T ; = 0 (88) sets a serous constrant on the vertcal covarant dervatves of tensor Z k. If conservaton (88) s needed, the feld equatons (86) tell us that ( H 1 ) 2 g H = 0. (89) ; But we cannot draw a concse equaton on Z k;l from (89). We fnd that the constrant equaton of Z k;l gven by (89) s so complcated that no valuable nformaton can be obtaned. Maybe, further studes wll demonstrate that (68) and (89) are exclusve, then the strong energy-momentum conservaton cannot be requred n the spacetme wth the nsler structure. In a concluson, we use the Chern connecton and the curvatures gven by the Chern connecton to set up the feld equatons of gravtaton n the nsler spacetme. After ntroducng the tensor Z k and ts related curvature-lke tensor H kl, we obtan the feld equatons of gravtaton, formally lke Ensten s feld equatons. We show that our feld equatons exactly reduces to Ensten s feld equatons when the nsler structure s Remannan.
