arxv: v1 [math.dg] 15 Jun 2007 Cohomology of dffeologcal spaces and folatons E. Macías-Vrgós; E. Sanmartín-Carbón Abstract Let (M, F) be a folated manfold. We study the relatonshp between the basc cohomology H b (M, F) of the folaton and the De Rham cohomology H(D F) of the space of leaves M/F as a quotent dffeologcal space. We prove that for an arbtrary folaton there s a morphsm H(D F) H b (M, F). It s an somorphsm when F s a Q-folaton. 1 Introducton Dffeologcal spaces were ntroduced by J.-M. Sourau [6] (and n a slghtly dfferent form by K.-T. Chen [2]), as a generalzaton of the noton of manfold. Spaces of maps and quotent spaces naturally ft nto ths category, and many defntons from dfferental geometry can be generalzed to ths settng. In partcular, due to ts contravarant nature, the cohomology groups of a dffeologcal space can be defned n a canoncal way. For a complete study of the De Rham calculus n dffeologcal spaces see P. Iglesas book [3]. From the pont of vew of folaton theory, the most nterestng example s the space of leaves M/F of a folated manfold, endowed wth the quotent dffeology D F. It s then a natural problem to compare ts cohomology H(D F ) wth the basc cohomology H b (M, F) of the folaton [5]. In ths note we prove that there s an morphsm B: H(D F ) H b (M, F). Also we prove that B s an somorphsm when F s a Q-folaton (n the sense of R. Barre [1]). Ths class of folatons ncludes remannan folatons wthout holonomy on a compact manfold; totally geodesc folatons; and folatons havng C. Godbllon s homotopy extenson property [4]. We thank F. Alcalde for several useful remarks. Partally supported by MEC Research Project MTM Span 1
2 Dffeologcal spaces Let X be a set. Each map α: U R n X defned on an open subset U of some eucldean space R n, n 0, wll be called a plot on X. A dffeology of class C on X s any famly D of plots satsfyng the followng axoms: 1. All constant plots are n D. 2. If α D s defned on U R n, and h: V R m U s any C map, then α h D. 3. Suppose that α: U R n X s a plot and that each t U has a neghbourhood V = V t U such that α V D. Then α D. A set X endowed wth a dffeology D s called a dffeologcal space. Let (X, D), (Y, E) be dffeologcal spaces. A map f: X Y s D-dfferentable f f α E for all α D. Example 1 (Fnte dmensonal manfolds) For nstance, on a C manfold M we can defne the C -dffeology D whch conssts on all the C plots α: U R n M, n 0. If M and N are C manfolds endowed wth the C -dffeology, then a map f: M N s D-dfferentable f and only f t s a map of class C. Example 2 (Folatons as dffeologcal spaces) Let (M, F) be a folated manfold. The space of leaves M/F (where two ponts on M are dentfed ff they are on the same leaf of F) can be endowed wth the so-called quotent dffeology D F : t s the least dffeology such that the canoncal projecton π: M M/F s D-dferencable, when we consder on M the C -dffeology. Explctly, a plot α: U R n M/F belongs to D F ff t U V t R n, neghbourhood of t, such that α Vt = π β t for some C -map β t : V t M. 3 Cohomology of dffeologcal spaces Let (X, D) be a dffeologcal space. A D-dfferental form of degree r 0 on X s a famly ω = {ω α } α D ndexed by the plots α: U R n X, α D, where each ω α Ω r (U) s an r-form n the doman U of α. We ask the famly ω to be compatble wth the C maps h: V R m U, n the sense that ω α h = h ω α. Let us denote Ω r (D) the space of D-dfferental r-forms. The exteror dfferental d: Ω r (D) Ω r+1 (D) s gven by dω = {dω α } α D f ω = {ω α } α D. It s well defned. Moreover t verfes d d = 0. The cohomology of the complex (Ω(D), d) wll be called the De Rham cohomology H(D) of the dffeologcal space (X, D). Let (X, D), (Y, E) be dffeologcal spaces, f: X Y a D-dfferentable map. The pull-back f : Ω r (E) Ω r (D) gven by (f ω) α = ω f α, α D, s well defned. Moreover f (dω) = d(f ω), ω Ω(E), hence f nduces a map f : H(E) H(D) n cohomology. 2
Theorem 3.1 Let M be a dfferentable manfold of fnte dmenson m < +, endowed wth the C -dffeology D. The map F: Ω(M) Ω(D) gven by F(ω) = {α ω} α D nduces an somorphsm H DR (M) = H(D) between the usual De Rham cohomology of M and the cohomology of the dffeologcal space (M, D). Proof: Clearly, the map F s well defned and commutes wth the exteror dfferental. We defne an nverse map G: Ω r (D) Ω r (M) as follows. Let us choose an atlas {ϕ : V M U R m } I on M. If θ Ω r (D), let G(θ) be the only r-form on M such that G(θ) V = (ϕ ) θ ϕ 1, I. We left the reader to check that the form G(θ) s smooth, well defned, and commutes wth the dfferental. Fnally, let us prove that F and G are nverse maps. If ω Ω r (M), then G(Fω) V = ω V, for all I. On the other hand, let θ Ω r (D). If α D s a plot wth doman U R n, for each t U we take a chart ϕ : V M U R m such that α(t) V. Then we have, when restrcted to α 1 (V ) U, that F(G(θ)) α = α G(θ) = α ϕ θ ϕ 1 = (ϕ α) θ ϕ 1 4 Basc cohomology of folatons = θ ϕ 1 ϕ α = θ α. Let (M, F) be a folated manfold. A dfferental form ω Ω r (M) s basc f X ω = 0, X dω = 0, for any vector feld X tangent to the folaton. In other words ω s horzontal (t vanshes n the tangent drectons) and t s preserved by any tangent flow (the Le dervatve L X ω = 0). The basc cohomology H b (M, F) of (M, F) s the cohomology of the complex Ω b (M, F) of basc forms, endowed wth the usual exteror dfferental d on M. Theorem 4.1 There s a morphsm H(D F ) H b (M, F) between the cohomology of the leaf space M/F, endowed wth the quotent dffeology D F, and the basc cohomology of the folaton. Proof: Accordngly to the proof of Theorem 3.1, we have the morphsm B = G π : Ω(D F ) Ω(D) = Ω(M), where π s nduced by the map π: M M/F. We must prove that f θ Ω r (D F ), then B(θ) s a basc form. Take an atlas {ϕ : V M U W R p R q } I adapted to the folaton (p = dm F). For each I, we have the followng commutatve dagram U W ϕ 1 V M p 2 π π ψ T τ M/F W where π : V T s a submerson onto a local transverse manfold; ψ : W T s the nduced transverse chart; and τ : T M/F s gven by τ (x) = π(x) f π (x) = x. Then B(θ) V = ϕ θ π ϕ 1 = ϕ θ τ ψ p 2 = (p 2 ϕ ) θ τ ψ. 3
Let X be a vector feld tangent to F. For any x M let I be such that x V. Then ( X B(θ)) x (v 1,..., v r 1 ) = B(θ) x (X x, v 1,...,v r 1 ) = ((p 2 ϕ ) θ τ ψ ) x (X x, v 1,...,v r 1 ) = 0, because (p 2 ϕ ) x (X x ) = 0. A smlar argument shows that X db(θ) = 0. Remark 1 The morphsm π : Ω(D F ) Ω(D) s njectve. 5 Q-folatons A folaton F n the manfold M s called a Q-folaton when t has the followng C tubular property [4]: for any manfold X wth a gven base pont x; any par of maps β, γ: X M such that π β = π γ; and any tangental path µ: I M such that µ(0) = β(x), µ(1) = γ(x), there exsts a neghbourhood U X of x and a dfferentable homotopy H: U I M verfyng: H(y, 0) = β(y), H(y, 1) = γ(y), y U; H(x, t) = µ(t), t I; for any y U the path H(y, t) s tangental to F. Theorem 5.1 Let F be a Q-folaton. Then the De Rham cohomology H(D F ) of the quotent dffeologcal space M/F s somorphc to the basc cohomology H b (M, F). Proof: We follow the notaton of Theorem 4.1. Let ω Ω r b (M, F) be a basc r-form. In order to obtan θ Ω(D F ) such that B(θ) = ω we have to defne θ α for any plot α: U R n M/F n D F. We know that x U V U and β D (both depend on x) such that α V = π β. Then we defne θ α V = θ π β = β ω. Clearly ths form s smooth and satsfes the compatblty condton. Let us prove that t s well defned. Suppose that V W and that we take another lft γ defned on W, that s α W = π γ. Let x V W. Choose an arbtrary tangental path µ n M between β(x) and γ(x), and let H: U I M be a homotopy as n the defnton of Q-manfold. Then β ω = H0 ω whle γ ω = H1 ω, so we just have to check that the functon t (Ht ω) x s constant. We shall prove that ts dervatve s null at t = 0, the same argument beng vald for any t = t 0 I. The proof s nspred n the classcal defnton of Le dervatve [7, page 70]. Let p = µ(0) M. Let v = µ (0) T p M be the vector tangent to the curve µ(t) at t = 0. Let us denote 1 L v ω = lm t 0 t ((H t ω) x (H0 ω) x) 4
the dervatve of the functon above. In order to prove that L v ω = 0 we shall proceed n several steps. 1. If r = 0, that s f ω s a basc functon f, then L v f = (d/dt) t=0 (f H t )(x) = f p (v) = 0 because the vector v s tangent to the folaton. 2. If ω = df s the dfferental of a basc functon f, let w T x (V W) be a tangent vector. It s defned by some curve ξ(s), that s ξ(0) = x and ξ (0) = w. Let us defne the functon F(t, s) = fh t ξ(s) = fh(t, ξ(s)). Then because (L v df)(w) = (d/dt) t=0 (H t df) x(w) = ( 2 F/ t s ) (0,0) (1) (dh t f) x (w) = (f H t ) x (w) = (d/ds) s=0 (fh t ξ(s)). For each s, let v s be the vector tangent to the curve H(ξ(s), t) at t = 0, whch s tangent to the folaton. Then (1) equals ( 2 F/ s t ) (0,0), whch s zero, because ( F/ t ) (0,s) = (d/dt) t=0 (fh t ξ(s)) = f H(ξ(s),0) (v s ) = For any two forms ω, µ we have L v (ω µ) = L v ω (H 0 ) xµ+(h 0 ) xω L v µ. In fact Ht (ω µ) H 0 (ω µ) = Ht ω Ht µ Ht ω H0µ + Ht ω H0µ H0ω H0µ = H t ω (H t µ H 0 µ) + (H t ω H 0 ω) H 0 µ. 4. Fnally, any basc form can be locally wrtten (by means of an adapted chart ϕ = (x, y j )) as a sum of products f(y 1,..., y q )dy j1 dy jr of basc functons and dfferentals of basc functons. Hence L v ω = 0. References [1] Barre, R., De quelques aspects de la théore des Q-varétés dfférentelles et analytques. Ann. Inst. Fourer 23-3 (1973), pp [2] Chen, K.-T., Iterated path ntegral.
