BESSEL BRIDGE REPRESENTATION FOR HEAT KERNEL IN HYPERBOLIC SPACE XUE CHENG AND TAI-HO WANG arxiv:7.94v mah.pr 7 Dec 7 Absrac. This aricle shows a Bessel bridge represenaion for he ransiion densiy of Brownian moion on he Poincaré space. This ransiion densiy is also referred o as he hea kernel on he hyperbolic space in differenial geomery lieraure. The represenaion recovers he well-known closed form expression for he hea kernel on hyperbolic space in dimension hree. However, he newly derived bridge represenaion is differen from he McKean kernel in dimension wo and from he Grue s formula in higher dimensions. The mehodology is also applicable o he derivaion of an analogous Bessel bridge represenaions for hea kernel on a Caran-Hadamard radially symmeric space and for he ransiion densiy of hyperbolic Bessel process.. Inroducion Hea kernel, also known as he fundamenal soluion for hea operaor, plays a crucial role in various branches of mahemaics including analysis, differenial geomery, and probabiliy heory. On Euclidean spaces, hea kernels have closed form expression given by he Gaussian kernels, which also serve as he ransiion densiy of Euclidean Brownian moions. Deriving, o some exen, analyical expression of hea kernel on general curved space is more involved if no compleely impossible. Symmery of he underlying space plays an imporan role. Hyperbolic space is one of he symmery spaces wih consan negaive curvaure ha has an expression for hea kernel in analyic form. As we shall see hroughou he aricle, due o symmery, expressions for hea kernels on hyperbolic space depend solely on geodesic disance. Derivaions of hea kernel on hyperbolic space in closed or quasi closed forms have been done by various auhors. We lis noable a few as follows. McKean in presened a quasi closed form expression (up o an inegral, nowadays known as he McKean kernel, for hea kernel on wo dimensional hyperbolic space, see (. below. A deailed derivaion of he McKean kernel using Fourier ransform, isomeries, and eigenvalues and eigenfuncions of he Laplace-Belrami operaor can be found in (Secion in Chaper X. The closed form expression for hea kernel on hree dimensional hyperbolic space, see (. below, and he Millson s recursion formula for
X. CHENG AND T.-H. WANG higher dimensional hyperbolic hea kernel were repored in. A differen proof of Millson s recursion formula based on he relaionship beween he hea kernel and he wave kernel and he explici formula for wave kernel on symmery space was given in 3. The following expression obained in 4 for he n-dimensional hyperbolic hea kernel is known as he Grue s formula ( / p H n(, z, w = e (n n + π(π n/ Γ e (π b / sinh(b sin(πb/ db, cosh(b + cosh(r (n+/ where r = d(z, w is he geodesic disance beween z, w H n. We refer he ineresed reader o for a derivaion of he Grue s formula and is relaionship o he pricing of Asian opions. A probabilisic approach, which is differen from he one employed in he curren aricle, of deriving he hea kernel on wo dimensional hyperbolic space can also be found in 7. As closed form expression is concerned, 9 obained expressions for hea kernels on symmeric spaces of rank. Finally, i is worh menioning ha a nice applicaion of he McKean kernel in quaniaive finance can be found in 5. In his aricle, we prove ye anoher represenaion for hea kernel on hyperbolic space: he Bessel bridge represenaion in Theorem. By working under geodesic polar coordinaes, Brownian moion in hyperbolic space is decomposed ino a one dimensional process in he radial par and a process on he uni sphere of codimension one. The radial par, also known as he hyperbolic Bessel process, is indeed a Brownian moion wih drif. Due o symmery of hyperbolic space, he drif in he radial par depends only on he geodesic disance. Girsanov s heorem allows us o define an equivalen probabiliy measure on he underlying probabiliy space hrough a Radon-Nikodym derivaive so ha, in he new probabiliy measure, he radial process becomes a Bessel process of order n. We hen subsiue he sochasic inegral ha resuls from he Radon-Nikodym derivaive wih a Riemann inegral by applying Io s formula. The bridge represenaion of hyperbolic hea kernel is hus obained by condiioning on he erminal poin of he radial process in he new probabiliy measure. The whole procedure is implemened in he proof of Theorem. Similar represenaion for he ransiion densiy of hyperbolic Bessel process is shown in Theorem. Wih minor modificaions, he same procedure is also applicable o he case of general Caran-Hadamard radially symmeric spaces and he resul is summarized in Theorem 3. We remark ha, in he one dimensional case, he idea of bridge represenaion for ransiion densiy of a diffusion firs appeared, o our knowledge, in 3, see also 4 for furher discussions.
BESSEL BRIDGE REPRESENTATION HYPERBOLIC HEAT KERNEL 3. Hea kernel on hyperbolic space Throughou he ex, sochasic processes and random variables are assumed defined on he complee filered probabiliy space (Ω, F, P, {F }, saisfying he usual condiions. We shall denoe he n-dimensional hyperbolic space by H n and he associaed hea kernel on H n beween z, w H n a ime by p H n(, z, w... The hyperbolic space. Convenionally, hyperbolic spaces are paramerized by wo isomerically equivalenly models: he half-space model and he ball model. The underlying space in he half-space model is he half plane R n + = {(x,, x n : x n > }, while he underlying space in he ball model is he open ball B n = {y = (y,, y n : y < }. The ransformaion beween he wo models can be found for insance in (p.64. In paricular, for n =, he ransformaion beween he wo models is given by he Möbius ransform, T : C + B, w = T (z = z i z + i. In he half-space model, he meric ds and he Laplace-Belrami are given respecively by ds = dx + + dx n, x n ( M = x n x + + x n + ( nxn n ; whereas in he ball model, he meric is given, in polar coordinaes (ρ, θ, θ S n, by ds = 4 ( dρ + ρ dθ, ( ρ M = ( ρ 4 where dθ is he Riemann meric and S n ( ρ + ρ ρ + ρ Sn, he Laplace-Belrami operaor on he sandard uni sphere S n. Moreover, if we make he ransformaion ρ = anh ( r, hen (r, θ becomes he geodesic polar coordinaes for H n. We shall be working primarily in he geodesic polar coordinaes (r, θ, S n under which he Riemann meric and he Laplace-Belrami operaor of H n are given respecively as ds = dr + sinh rdθ, H n = r + (n coh r r + sinh r S n.
4 X. CHENG AND T.-H. WANG We remark ha he geodesic polar coordinaes on H n is a global diffeomorphism, henceforh defines a global coordinaes, since hyperbolic space is Caran-Hadamard... The hea kernel. Generally speaking, hea kernel on a differeniable manifold M is a fundamenal soluion o he (probabilis s hea operaor M, where M is he Laplace-Belrami operaor on M. The minimal hea kernel also serves as he ransiion densiy of Brownian moion on M. We refer he reader o 6 for exposiions of Brownian moions on manifolds and heir relaionships o hea kernel. For reader s reference, we reproduce he hea kernel on he wo and hree dimensional hyperbolic spaces in he following. e / p H (z, w, = (π 3/ and d(z,w ξe ξ cosh ξ cosh d(z, w dξ (. e r p H 3(z, w, = e (π 3/ where r = d(z, w is he geodesic disance beween z and w. r sinh(r, (. Noe ha he hea kernels given in (. and (. are densiies wih respec o he volume form. In he following, we apply Girsanov s heorem o derive an expression for he hea kernel over H n, for n, in which he closed form expression (. for H 3 is recovered. Noe ha since he Laplace-Belrami operaor on H n is roaionally invarian, he hea kernel, or equivalenly he ransiion densiy for he Brownian moion on hyperbolic space, is also roaionally invarian, hence a radial funcion. Consider he processes (R, Θ governed by he SDEs dr = dw + n coh(r d, (.3 dθ = sinh(r dz, (.4 where W is a sandard one dimensional Brownian moion and Z is a Brownian moion on he sandard sphere S n, independen of W. The infiniesimal generaor of he process (R, Θ is H n. Thus, i represens a Brownian moion on Hn in geodesic polar coordinaes. We se he iniial condiion Θ o be a random variable uniformly disribued on S n so ha he disribuion of Θ remains uniformly disribued on S n for all. The main resul of he aricle is given in he following heorem. Theorem. (Bessel bridge represenaion Le z, w H n. The hea kernel p H n(t, z, w on he hyperbolic space H n has he
BESSEL BRIDGE REPRESENTATION HYPERBOLIC HEAT KERNEL 5 following represenaion p H n(t, z, w = e (n T ( r n e r T Ẽ sinh r (πt n r e (n (n 3 sinh (R R d, (.5 where r = r(z, w is he geodesic disance beween z and w. Ẽ r denoes he condiional expecaion Ẽ R T = r, where R is a Bessel process of order n in he P-measure. Proof. Le (R, Θ be he process saisfying (.3:(.4 wih iniial condiions R = and Θ being uniformly disribued on S n. We sar wih calculaing he expecaion of an arbirary bounded measurable radial funcion f as Ef(R T = f(rp(t, r sinh n rdrdω, S n where dω is he volume form on S n and p(t, r = p H n(t, z, w, r = r(z, w denoes he geodesic disance beween z and w. For he radial process R, define he new measure P by he Radon-Nikodym derivaive d P dp = T e h(rdw h (R d, (.6 where h(r = n coh(r. Noe ha h is a bounded funcion, in fac, h(r r n for all r. Thus (.6 is a well-defined change of probabiliy measure. Therefore, Girsanov s heorem implies ha, under he measure P, W is a Brownian moion wih drif h. Moreover, in he P-measure, he SDE for he radial process R becomes dr = d W + n d R, which is a Bessel process of order n. Therefore, we have Ef(R T = Ẽ f(r T dp = d P Ẽ = f(r Ẽ T e h(rd W f(r T e h(rdw+ h (R d h (R d. (.7 We subsiue he sochasic inegral in (.7 wih a Riemann inegral by applying Io s formula as follows. Le H be an aniderivaive of h, i.e., H = h. Apparenly, H(r = n ln ( r sinh r. Then by applying Io s formula we have h(r d W h (R = H(R T H( + n I follows ha he exponen of he exponenial erm in (.7 becomes h(r d W h (R d h(r d. R
6 X. CHENG AND T.-H. WANG = H(R T + H( + sinh(rt = ln Hence, we have R T n Ef(R T = e (n T Ẽ h (R + n (n (n (n 3 T { sinh(rt f(r T R T h(r h (R R } n e (n (n 3 d sinh (R R In paricular, when n = 3, he las expression has a much simpler form: Ef(R T = e T Ẽ f(r T sinh(r T. R T sinh (R R Finally, since R in P measure is a Bessel process of order n, we end up wih f(rp(t, r sinh n rdrdω = Ef(R T S n { } n = e (n T sinh(rt Ẽ f(r T e (n (n 3 sinh (R R d = e (n T Ẽ r = e (n T Ẽ r Γ ( n π n S n e (n (n 3 S n e (n (n 3 R T ( sinh r f(r r sinh (R R ( r f(r sinh r sinh (R R d n n e r T d r n e r T (T n Γ ( n (πt n drdω sinh n rdrdω, d. d. where in passing o he penulimae equaliy we used he probabiliy densiy p B of he Bessel process R given by p B (, r = rn e r ( n Γ ( n which saisfies he Fokker-Planck equaion u = r u n ( u r r wih iniial condiion u(r, = δ(r, he Dirac dela funcion cenered a. Also noe ha he normalizing consan π n Γ( n comes from he volume of Sn. Thus, we obain he bridge represenaion (.5 for he ransiion densiy of hyperbolic Brownian moion.
Remark. BESSEL BRIDGE REPRESENTATION HYPERBOLIC HEAT KERNEL 7 Noe ha when n = 3 he represenaion (.5 reduces o p H 3(T, z, w = e T r sinh r e r T (πt 3 which coincides wih he closed form expression (.. However, for n =, (.5 reads p H (T, z, w = e T r e { } r T T sinh r πt Ẽr sinh e (R R d. Noice ha ( This expression is differen from he McKean kernel (. or he Grue s formula in he sense ha a he power of πt is in he correc dimension ( n = and b he Gaussian erm e r T is facored oufron naurally. ( The inegrand in he exponenial erm, i.e., he funcion φ(x := is sinh x x increasing in, wih lim x + φ(x = and lim 3 x φ(x =. Therefore, φ is bounded above by and below by 3. As applicaions of he bridge represenaion (.5, a series expansion and an asympoic expansion in small ime for he hyperbolic hea kernel are almos sraighforward. For noaional simpliciy, hereafer in his subsecion we shall denoe by (n (n 3 g(r = sinh (r. r Noe ha g is sricly decreasing and g(r (n (n 3 4 for all r >. Corollary. The hyperbolic hea kernel p H n has he following series expansion p H n(t, z, w (. ( = e (n T r n e r T e T ( sinh r (πt n g(rd T k k k! I suffices o deal wih he condiional expecaion erm in (.5. { } sinh Ẽ (R R d r e (n (n 3 k=

( k {g(r g(r } d k {g(r g(r } d by dominaing convergence heorem since he random variable {g(r g(r } d is bounded. In fac, {g(r g(r } d (n (n 3 T almos surely. Finally, by making he change of variable = T s we obain he series expansion (.. We remark ha in fac we have he freedom of selecing he deerminisic pah r in he series expansion (.. We choose he pah as such since i serves as a firs order unbiased esimaor in he small ime asympoic expansion in he corollary ha follows. Corollary. As T +, he hyperbolic hea kernel p H n asympoic expansion up o second order has he following small ime where r is given in (.9. p H n(t, z, w (. As shown in he plos, he unbiased esimaor does a prey decen job; whereas he sraigh line approximaion is off for high dimensions. dimension =, = dimension = 5, = densiy..6. densiy geodesic disance geodesic disance dimension =, = dimension = 5, = densiy e+ e 4e densiy.e+.e 4.e geodesic disance geodesic disance Figure. Transiion densiy of hyperbolic Bessel process. The radial par R of hyperbolic Brownian moion saisfying (.3 is also referred o as he hyperbolic Bessel process. Hyperbolic Bessel processes and he calculaions of heir relaed momens are exensively explored in recen papers and. By he same oken as in Theorem, we may as well derive a Bessel bridge represenaion for he hyperbolic Bessel process. The advanage of he bridge represenaion is ha he expression is consisen across dimensions. However, formulas given in (see Theorem 3.3, obained by applying he Millson s recursion formula, become more and more inracable as dimension goes higher.
X. CHENG AND T.-H. WANG Theorem. The ransiion densiy p HB (T, x, y of he hyperbolic Bessel process R of order n from x o y has he following Bessel bridge represenaion. For T > and x, y >, p HB (T, x, y (. { } n = e (n T sinh(y Ẽ x e (n (n 3 sinh (R R d sinh(x R T = y e x +y T ( xy πt T n n Γ( n π e xy T cos(ξ sin n (ξdξ. Proof. As in he proof of Theorem, for any bounded measurable funcion f, he expecaion of f(r condiioned on R can be wrien as Ef(R T R = e (n T Ẽ R f(r T { } n sinh(rt R e (n (n 3 R T sinh(r sinh (R R d, where Ẽ is he expecaion in he P-measure defined in (.6, under which R is a Bessel process of order n. Recall ha he ransiion densiy p B (, x, y of Bessel process of order n from x o y in ime is given by ( y ν x ye x +y ( I xy ν p B (, x, y = y n e y ( n Γ( n if x ; if x =. where ν = n. Hence, he ransiion densiy p HB(, x, y (from x o y in ime for he hyperbolic Bessel process (i.e., R in he P-measure has he represenaion p HB (T, x, y { = e (n T sinh(y x y sinh(x ( y ν ( ye T x x +y xy T I ν T = e (n T e x +y T ( xy πt T } n Ẽ x { } n sinh(y Ẽ x e (n (n 3 sinh(x n n Γ( n π e (n (n 3 e xy T sinh (R R d sinh (R R d cos(ξ sin n (ξdξ, R T = y R T = y
BESSEL BRIDGE REPRESENTATION HYPERBOLIC HEAT KERNEL where in he las equaliy we used he following inegral represenaion for he modified Bessel funcion I ν I ν (z = z ν π ν π Γ(ν + e z cos(ξ sin ν (ξdξ. In paricular, when n = 3, (. can be expressed in elemenary funcions as = e p HB (, x, y sinh(y sinh(x e x +y π = e sinh(y x +y π sinh(x e = e π sinh(y sinh(x xy ( e (x y π e xy cos(ξ sin(ξdξ (e xy e xy e (x+y which coincides wih he formula in. We summarize he resul in he following corollary. Corollary 3. The ransiion densiy p HB of he hyperbolic Bessel process R of order 3 has he following closed form expression. For > and x, y >, ( p HB (, x, y = e sinh(y e (x y e (x+y. π sinh(x Noice ha, since he condiional expecaion erm in (. is exacly he same as he one in (.5, one can easily derive series and small ime asympoic expansions for he ransiion densiy of hyperbolic Bessel process, similarly as he ones in Corollaries and. For example, we have Corollary 4. As T +, he ransiion densiy p HB of hyperbolic Bessel process has he following small ime asympoic expansion up o second order p HB (T, x, y = e (n T e x +y T { sinh(y sinh(x ( xy πt T where r is given in (.9. } n n e (n (n 3 n Γ( n π sinh (r r d e xy T cos(ξ sin n (ξdξ { + O(T }.
X. CHENG AND T.-H. WANG 3. Bridge represenaion in radially symmeric spaces Le M be a radially symmeric space ha is also Caran-Hadamard. We recall ha a Caran-Hadamard manifold is a negaively curved, complee and simply conneced Riemannian manifold whose exponenial map a any given poin defines a global diffeomorphism. Consequenly, he geodesic polar coordinaes a pole are globally defined for such manifolds. We refer he reader o 6 and he references herein for more deailed discussions. In geodesic polar coordinaes, he Riemann meric ds and he Laplace-Belrami operaor M on M can be wrien respecively as ds = dr + G (rdθ, (3. M = r + (n G (r G(r r + G (r Sn, (3. where r is he geodesic disance and, as before, dθ denoes he sandard Riemann meric over he uni sphere S n. The radial funcion G is nonnegaive and saisfies G( = and G ( =. Conceivably due o symmery, hea kernel on such spaces has analogous Bessel bridge represenaion as for he hyperbolic space wih minor modificaions. We presen he represenaion in he following heorem bu omi is proof since i is almos idenical wih he proof of Theorem. Theorem 3. (Bessel bridge represenaion in radially symmeric space Le M be an n-dimensional Caran-Hadamard radial symmeric space wih Riemann meric and Laplace-Belrami operaor given by (3. and (3. respecively a is pole z M. Then, for w M, he hea kernel p M (T, z, w has he following represenaion = p M (T, z, w { r } n e r T G(r (πt n E r e ( (n (n 3 { ( } G R (R n G (R d G(R 4 G(R, (3.3 where r = r(z, w is he geodesic disance beween z and w. E r denoes he Bessel bridge measure, i.e., he condiional expecaion E R T = r. Remark. Similarly, in hree dimensional case, n = 3, he represenaion (3.3 has he following slighly simpler form p(t, z, w = r Ẽ G(r (πt 3 r e e r T G (R G(R d,

Finally, a direc applicaion of (3.3 is he following expansion in small ime of he hea kernel on radially symmery space: Corollary 5.
