ON SCHRÖDINGER S EQUATION, 3-DIMENSIONAL BESSEL BRIDGES, AND PASSAGE TIME PROBLEMS arxiv:15.498v1 [mah.pr 21 May 21 GERARDO HERNÁNDEZ-DEL-VALLE Absrac. In his work we relae he densiy of he firs-passage ime of a Wiener process o a moving boundary wih he hree dimensional Bessel bridge process and a soluion of he hea equaion wih a moving boundary. We provide bounds. 1. The problem Problem 1.1. The main moivaion of his work is o find he densiy of he firs ime T, ha a one-dimensional, sandard Brownian moion B, reaches he moving boundary f: (1) T := inf B = f() where f() := a + f (u)du, f () >, and (f (u)) 2 du < for all >. Alernaively, assuming he previous assumpions: Proposiion 1.2. Given ha (2) h(s, a) := a exp a2 2πs 3 2s s, a R is he densiy of he firs ime ha B reaches he fixed level a, he process X is a 3-dimensional Bessel bridge, which has he following dynamics: d X = dw + ( 1 X X s ) d, X = a, [, s). 2 2 GERARDO HERNÁNDEZ-DEL-VALLE (Where W is a Wiener process.) Then, he disribuion of T equals (3) P(T < ) = [ exp 1 2 exp f (u) X u du (f (u)) 2 du f ()a h(s, a)ds Proof. From Girsanov s heorem, he fac ha he boundary f is wice coninuously differeniable, he following Radon-Nikodym derivaive: dp () := exp f (s)d B s 1 (f (s)) 2 ds d P 2 := exp f () B + f (s) B s ds 1 (f (s)) 2 ds, 2 is indeed a maringale [Novikov s condiion and induces he following relaionship: [ dp P(T ) := d P ()I (T ) [ dp = d P (T )I (T ) [ dp T = d P (T ) = s h(s, a)ds, where he second equaliy follows from he opional sampling heorem, and he hird from condiioning wih respec o T under P, and h is defined in (2). In Revuz and Yor (1999) (Chaper 11), i is shown ha calculaing: [ dp T (4) d P (T ) = s is equivalen o finding he expeced value of a funcional of a 3- dimensional Bessel bridge X, which a ime sars a a and a ime
ON SCHRÖDINGER S EQUATION, 3-DIMENSIONAL BESSEL BRIDGES 3 s equals. Indeed, [ dp T d P (T ) = s [ (5) = exp T f (T )a + 1 (f (u)) 2 du 2 [ = exp f (s)a + [ = exp T T = s f (u) B u du f (u)(a X u )du 1 2 f (s)a + (f (s) f ())a 1 (f (u)) 2 du 2 [ = exp f (u) X u du exp 1 (f (u)) 2 du f ()a 2 (f (u)) 2 du f (u) X u du hus he process a X equals a =, and a s reaches level a for he firs ime, as required [see Figures 1 3. From equaion (5) i is clear ha our nex goal is o compue he following expeced value: [ (6) exp f (u) X u du. Theorem 1.3. Suppose ha v(, a) : [, s R + R + is coninuous, is of class C 1,2 and saisfies he Cauchy problem v + f ()av = 1 ( 2 v 1 2 a + 2 a a ) v (7) [, s) R +, s a as well as v(s, a) = 1, a R +, v(, a) 1, a R +
4 GERARDO HERNÁNDEZ-DEL-VALLE Then v(, a) admis he sochasic represenaion v(, a) = E [exp,a f (u) X u du Proof. We proceed as in he proof of Theorem 5.7.6, pp , Karazas & Shreve (1991). Applying Io s rule o he process v(y, X y ) exp f (u) X u du, y [, s, and obain, wih τ n := inf y s X y n, v(, a) = [exp,a f (u) X u du I (τn>s) τn [v(τ +,a n, X τn ) exp f (u) X u du The second erm converges o zero as n, since τn [v(τ,a n, X τn ) exp f (u) X u du [v(τ,x n, X τn )I (τn s) y I (τn s) I (τn s) P,x (τ n s) ) = (max P,x X θ n θ s [max,x X θ 2m θ s n 2m [see Piman and Yor (1998) for he momens of he running maximum of X. Finally, he firs erm converges o [exp,a f (u) X u du eiher by he dominaed or by he monoone convergence heorem.
ON SCHRÖDINGER S EQUATION, 3-DIMENSIONAL BESSEL BRIDGES 5 2. Soluions of equaion (7) Proposiion 2.1. Soluions o (7) are of he following form where v(, a) = w(, a) h(s, a) (8) w (, a) + f ()aw(, a) = 1 2 w aa(, a). and h(s, a) as in (2). Proof. Seing u(, a) = 1/h(s, a) and v(, a) = u(, a)w(, a), we have ha [ a 2 u (, a) = 2(s ) 3 2 2(s ) [ 1 u a (, a) = a a u(, a) s [ 2 u aa (, a) = a + a2 2 (s ) 1 2 s and u(, a) u(, a) v = u w + uw v x = u x w + uw x v xx = u xx w + 2u x w w + uw xx. Hence from (7) and (8) i follows ha [ u 1 ( 1 2 u aa a a ) u a w = s as claimed. [ ( 1 u a + a a ) u w a, s Theorem 2.2. Soluions o (8) are given by (9) w(, a) = e 1 2 = e 1 2 (f (u)) 2 du+af () 1 2π (f (u)) 2 du+af () ω(s, a + where ω is a soluion o he hea equaion. Π(y)e 1 2 y2 (s )+iy(a+ f (u)du) dy f (u)du)

ON SCHRÖDINGER S EQUATION, 3-DIMENSIONAL BESSEL BRIDGES 7 Proof. Le (1) ŵ(, λ) := e iλa w(, a)da. Applying he Fourier ransform o (8) we have ŵ (, λ) + if ()ŵ λ (, λ) λ2 ŵ(, λ) = i := 1. Nex, se y = λ + if () and ŵ(, λ) = w(, y), ha is: ŵ = w + if () w y, which afer subsiuion in (1) leads o ŵ λ = w y Consequenly w(, y) = Π(y) exp 1 2 = Π(y) exp w (, y) (y if ()) 2 w(, y) =. (y if (u)) 2 du 1 2 y2 (s ) + iy which alernaively implies ha w(, a) = 1 2π = 1 2π as claimed. = e 1 2 f (u)du Π(y)e 1 2 y2 (s )+iy f (u)du+ 1 2 (f (u)) 2du e iλa dλ (f (u)) 2 du Π(y)e 1 2 y2 (s )+iy f (u)du+ 1 2 (f (u)) 2du e iya+af () dy (f (u)) 2 du+af () 1 2π Π(y)e 1 2 y2 (s )+iy(a+ f (u)du) dy Theorem 2.3. The densiy ω of he firs passage ime T defined in (1), is bounded by h(s, a)e af () 1 2 ( ω s, a + (f (u)) 2 du f (u)e a ( X u)du ) f (u)du h(s, a)e af () 1 2 (f (u)) 2 du where ω is a soluion of he forward hea equaion and h is as in (2).
