arxiv:6.599v [mah.ca] 5 Nov 26 Counerexamples on Jumarie s hree basic fracional calculus formulae for non-differeniable coninuous funcions Cheng-shi Liu Deparmen of Mahemaics Norheas Peroleum Universiy Daqing 6338, China chengshiliu-68@26.com Ocober 5, 28 Absrac Juamrie proposed a modified Riemann-Liouville derivaive definiion and gave hree so-called basic fracional calculus formulae (u()v()) (α) = u (α) ()v()+u()v (α) (), (f(u())) (α) = f uu (α) ()and(f(u())) (α) = (f(u)) (α) (u ()) α where u and v are required o be non-differeniable and coninuous for he firs formula, f is assumed o be differeniable for he second formula, while in he hird formula f is non-differeniable and u is differeniable, a he poin. I once gave hree counerexamples o show ha Jumarie s hree formulae are no rue for differeniable funcions(cheng-shi Liu. Counerexamples on Jumaries wo basic fracional calculus formulae. Communicaions in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulaion, 25, 22(): ). However, hese examples canno direcly become he suiable counerexamples for he case of non-differeniable coninuous funcions. In he presen paper, I firs provide five counerexamples o show direcly he Jumarie s formulae are also no rue for non-differeniable coninuous funcions. Then I prove ha essenially non-differeniable cases can be ransformed o he differeniable cases. Therefore, hose counerexamples in he above paper are indirecly righ. In summary, he Jumarie s formulae are no rue. This paper can be considered as he corrigendum and supplemen o he above paper. Keywords: counerexample, fracional calculus, modified Riemann- Liouville s derivaive Inroducion Jumarie proposed a modified Riemann-Liouville fracional derivaive[-5]: f (α) d () = Γ( α) d ( x) α (f(x) f())dx. ()
and gave some basic fracional calculus formulae(see, for example, formulae (3.)-(3.3) in Ref.[4] or formulae (4.3), (4.4) and (4.5)in Ref.[5]): (u()v()) (α) = u (α) ()v()+u()v (α) (), (2) (f(u())) (α) = f uu (α) (), (3) where Jumarie requires he funcions u and v are non-differeniable and coninuous, while f is differeniable, a he poin. Jumarie s hird formula is given by (f(u())) (α) = (f(u)) (α) (u ()) α, (4) where f is non-differeniable and u is differeniable a he poin. The formula (3) has been applied o solve he exac soluions o some nonlinear fracional order differenial equaions(see, for example, Refs.[6-9]). In [], I once gave hree counerexamples o show ha Jumarie s hese so-called basic formulae are no correc. Bu, I negleced he condiions of he Jumarie s formulae. Indeed, for example, he formula (2) requires ha he funcions u and v are non-differeniable and coninuous, and he formula (3) requires ha f is differeniable while u is non-differeniable and coninuous, a he poin. Therefore, he examples in [] canno be considered as suiable direc counerexamples o Jumarie s formulae under he condiions of non-differeniable funcions. However, I will show ha hese counerexamples do hold indirecly. In addiion, since he funcions in [6-9] need o be differeniable, my counerexamples are sill righ for hese applicaions. In [], Jumarie emphasizes ha i is jus a some poin ha his formulae do hold. A such poin, he funcion is non-differeniable and coninuous, and he fracional derivaive exiss. In he presen paper, I furher provide five counerexamples which saisfy all condiions in Jumarie s formulae o show direcly ha Jumarie s formulae are incorrec for he cases of non-differeniable coninuous funcions. Finally, I prove ha essenially non-differeniable cases can be ransformed o he differeniable cases. Therefore, in oher words, hose counerexamples in he paper [] are indirecly valid. Recenly, some problems abou he rules of fracional derivaives have been discussed by some auhors(see, for example, [-3]). For insance, Tarasov[2] gave an imporan resul for Leibniz rule. For local fracional derivaive of nowhere differeniable coninuous funcions on open inervals, some deailed discussions can be found in [3]. 2 Counerexamples o formula (2) As in [], we need he 2 order derivaives of he following four funcions f() =,f() =, f() = 2 and f() = 3 2 wih f() = : () (/2) = 2 π, (5) 2
( π ) (/2) = 2, (6) ( 2 ) (/2) = 83/2 3 π, (7) ( 3 2 ) (/2) = 3 π. (8) 4 Counerexample (The counerexample of formula (2)). Take α = 2 and,, u() = (9) +, >. I is easy o see ha u() is coninuous, and is non-differeniable a =. Furher, we have H() = ( x) α x (f(x) f())dx = x dx,, x x dx+ x+x x dx, >. () And hen, we have H() = Le x = s 2. Then we have K() = Therefore, if <, If >, x x x dx = 2 x dx,, x x dx+ x x dx, >. u (/2) () = ( ) ( 2 ) = () ( s 2 )dx = 4 3 ( )3 2. (2) π 2 ; (3) u (/2) () = ( ) ( 2 ) + π K () = π ( ) 2, (4) π where we use Γ( 2 ) = π. And hence, a =, i follows ha u (/2) () exiss and π u (/2) () = 2. (5) Furher, by aking v() = u(), we have u (/2) ()v()+u()v (/2) () = π. (6) On he oher hand, we have u()v() =,, ( + ) 2, >. (7) 3
Hence, if <, we have If >, we have (uv) (/2) () = () ( 2 ) = 2 π ; (8) Furher, we have (uv) (/2) () = d π d x ( x+x ) 2 dx+ dx}. (9) x x (uv) (/2) () = () ( 2 ) + π 3 x+2(x ) x 2 x dx. (2) By compuing he las inegral, we ge (uv) (/2) () = 2 π + 8 π π 3 ( ) ( 2 arcsin )+2arcsin π}. (2) Therefore, a =, (uv) (/2) () does exis and (uv) (/2) () = 2 π π. From (6), i urns ou ha we have (uv) (/2) () u (/2) ()v()+u()v (/2) (). (22) This example shows ha Jumarie s formula(2) is no rue for he non-differeniable coninuous funcions. Nex, we give a more simple example. Counerexample 2. Take α = 2 and u() =,,, >. (23) I is easy o see ha u() is coninuous, and is non-differeniable a =. Furher, we have H() = ( x) α (u(x) u())dx = x x dx,, x x dx+ x 2 x dx, >. (24) And hen, we have H() = x x dx,, x x dx+2 x x dx, >. (25) Therefore, if <, u (/2) () = () ( 2 ) = 2 π ; (26) 4
If >, I follows ha u (/2) () = H () = 2 π π +4 π. (27) u (/2) () = 2 π. (28) Hence, from u() = we have 2u()u (/2) () =. (29) On he oher hand, we have u 2 () = ( ) 2 = 2 2+, and hen Therefore, we ge So we give (u 2 ) (/2) () = ( 2 ) (/2) 2() (/2) = 8 3 π π 2. (3) (u 2 ) (/2) () = 4 3. (3) π (u 2 ) (/2) () 2u()u (/2) (). (32) Therefore, if we ake v() = u(), we have equivalenly from (32) (uv) (/2) () u (/2) ()v()+u()v (/2) (). (33) This shows again ha Jumarie s formula(2) is no rue for he non-differeniable coninuous funcions. 3 Counerexamples o formula (3) Counerexample 3 (The counerexample of formula (3)). Take f(u) = u 2 and u() is also given by (9), and α = 2. Then f(u()) is given by,, f(u()) = ( + ) 2 (34), >. Firsly, herefore, we ge he 2 order derivaive of f(u()) a = (f(u())) (/2) = = (u 2 ()) (/2) = = 2 π. (35) Secondly, from (5) and u() =, a =, we have f u()u (/2) () = π. (36) So we find (f(u())) (/2) = f u u(/2) () =. (37) 5
This shows ha he Jumarie s formula (3) is no correc for non-differeniable coninuous funcions. Counerexample 4. Take u() as he same as (23) in counerexample 2, and f(u) = u 2. According o he counerexample 2, we have and I urns ou ha (f(u())) (/2) = = (u 2 ) (/2) () = 4 3 π, (38) f (u)u (/2) () = = 2u()u (/2) () =. (39) (f(u())) (/2) = f u u(/2) () =. (4) This shows again ha he Jumarie s formula(3) is no correc for non-differeniable coninuous funcions. 4 Counerexamples o formula (4) Counerexample 5. We ake α = 2, u() = 2. f(u) is aken as he following form u, u, f(u) = (4) u+u, u >. I is easy o see ha f(u) is non-differeniable a u = and f ( 2 ) () = π 2 from he formula (5). Therefore, we have f ( 2 ) (u)(u ())) π 2 = = 2. (42) On he oher hand, since u() = 2, we have,, f(u()) = + 2, >. (43) Therefore, when <, we have When >, we have (f(u())) (/2) = () (/2) = 2 π. (44) (f(u())) (/2) = () (/2) = 2 π + 2 ( π 3 ( )3 2 ). (45) In fac, when >, we have H() = ( x) α (f(u(x)) f(u()))dx = x x+x 2 dx+ dx. x x (46) 6
And hen, we have hence, we have H() = x x 2 dx+ dx. (47) x x (f(u())) (/2) = H () = () (/2) + 2x dx. (48) π π x By aking x = s 2, we have I follows ha Therefore, we ge x x dx = ( s 2 )ds = 3 ( )3 2. (49) (f(u())) (/2) = 2 π ( )3 2. (5) By (42) and (5), i urns ou ha (f(u()) (/2) = = 2 π. (5) (f(u())) (/2) = (f(u)) (/2) (u ()) 2 =. (52) This shows ha he Jumarie s formula (4) is no rue for non-differeniable coninuous funcions. 5 Explanaion Theorem. Le u () and u 2 () be wo coninuous differeniable funcions on [,+ ), ha is, belong o C [,+ ). Take he funcion u() as u (),, u() = (53) u 2 (), >, where > is a fixed poin, u ( ) = u 2 ( ) and u ( ) u 2 ( ), ha is, u() is coninuous and non-differeniable a he poin. If u (α) () is coninuous, and u (α) ( ) exiss and is finie, hen u (α) ( ) also exiss and u (α) ( ) = u (α) ( ), where < α <. Proof. By he definiion of u() and he condiions of he heorem, we have (α) u u (α) () = (), <, d Γ( α) d u (x) u () ( x) dx+ u 2(x) u () α ( x) dx}, > α. (54) 7
Furher, we have (α) u u (α) () = (), <, d Γ( α) d u (x) u () ( x) dx+ u 2(x) u (x) α ( x) dx}, > α. Therefore, we ge (α) u u (α) () = (), <, u (α) ()+ d u 2(x) u (x) Γ( α) d ( x) dx, > α. Since u 2 (x) u (x) is differeniable, we have d d u 2 (x) u (x) ( x) α dx = (55) (56) u 2 (x) u (x) ( x) α dx. (57) Because u 2(x) u (x) is coninuous from he condiions of he heorem, and ( x) α is inegrable in [,], by he mean value heorem of inegral(see, for example,[4]), we have u 2 (x) u (x) ( x) α where ξ (,). Hence, we obain d lim d u 2 (x) u (x) ( x) α dx = (u 2 (ξ) u (ξ))( ) α, (58) α dx = lim (u 2 (ξ) u (ξ))( ) α α From he coninuiy of u (α) () a he poin, i follows ha =. (59) u (α) ( ) = u (α) ( ). (6) The proof is compleed. According o he above heorem, we know ha u (α) ( ) doesn depend on he funcion u 2, ha is, u (α) ( ) doesn depend on he values of u() on (, ). On he oher hand, from he definiion (), we can also see he fac. Therefore, o compue u (α) ( ), we can smoohly coninue he funcion u() from u () on [, ] o (, ), such ha u() is differeniable a he poin. In oher words, essenially, hose counerexamples in [] are also righ. For insance, he funcion u() = in he counerexample in [] is jus he smooh coninuaion of he funcion defined on [,] in he counerexample in he presen paper. 6 conclusion By he above counerexamples and heory, we have showed ha he Jumarie s hree basic formulae for fracional derivaive are no correc for non-differeniable coninuous funcions.
