7 A Tribute to Our Fire Rescue Companies By Peter W. Riffle '64 My original plan for this article was to write a brief history of each fire rescue company and to sprinkle in a few of my personal memories. Upon beginning to do my research, I quickly realized that books could be and have been written on one or more of these companies and that possibly my pathetic attempt to do them justice would fail miserably. So please bear with me as I reminisce about the "Adamstown Fire Company" the one I knew best while growing up. Back in the day the term fire company, not fire rescue company as it is appropriately named today, was used when discussing your town's unit. Little did I realize how much our fire company served as the hub of community activity in Adamstown as well as did the fire companies in every other town I knew. Fire companies, just like elementary schools, were found in each community. Most of us, me included, never gave a thought as to how a fire company came to be; it was simply there as expected with no thought as to how it came into existence. Many fire companies had "fire halls" that were used for most of the town's social events. Sweet Sixteen parties (Why didn't parents also have those celebrations for their sons?), wedding receptions, BINGO, Halloween parties, Christmas parties which always included Santa, dances, basketball games, music recitals, and the list goes on and on. The Denver and Schoeneck fire companies held "record hops" a couple of times a month, and these much anticipated events I never missed. The worst punishment my parents could dole out was, "You're not going to the dance!" One unique event that I attended at the A-town fire hall was tap dance lessons. Yes, that's correct, tap dance lessons! I enrolled with all of the town's little kids. For those of you who know me, you're probably laughing visualizing me trying to do this. I was extremely tall and about as thick as a string of thin spaghetti going "heal and toe, heal and toe." My tap dancing career was very short lived, as were my drum lessons which lasted one day due to a hole I somehow put in the drum! A few of our local fire companies also had carnival grounds where country music legends actually displayed their talents. Carnivals were major social events for teenagers as there was loud music, great food, games of chance, and tons of kids to meet. Adults seemed to enjoy themselves as well since crab cakes and other delightful treats were for sale during the day's events. Housing of a new apparatus called for a daylong celebration which always included a parade with companies participating from many different surrounding towns and frequently featured a few Dalmatians perched proudly on antique engines. The Housing Ceremony reflected traditions as old as the fire service itself. The first part of the ceremony included transferring water from the retiring engine to the new engine. "This part of the ceremony is the act of transferring old to new. Like many things in life, it is important not to forget the past. This water is ready to protect life and property and now we are moving it to our new apparatus." For the next part of the ceremony, the crew washed down the tires of the new apparatus. During the hub and spoke wooden wheels era, washing the wheels kept them from drying out after a fire. The horse-drawn wagon was also cleaned before pulling it into the fire station. The final part of the traditional housing ceremony involved having the firefighters push the new apparatus into the firehouse, a fire service tradition that dates back to the 19th century. In Adamstown most of the teenage boys joined the junior fire company considering it to be a really "cool" thing to do. I had a chrome junior fireman badge which I carried in my wallet for a number of years. Saturday morning's Chief Elmer "Moony" Mohn and a few of the other men taught us basic fire-fighting techniques, always stressing safety. We were schooled on the truck, its compartments, and where each piece of equipment was stored. Eventually they timed us on our ability to quickly find a specific object they called out. Chief emphasized the importance of being able to locate equipment at a moment s notice. During one of our training sessions someone exclaimed that it would be exciting to fight a great fire. Co i ued o Page 7

8 (Continued from Page 6) Instantly the session turned very serious with Chief sitting us all down and using an uncharacteristic tone of voice he said, "Don't ever say that again; that great fire you're referring to might be destroying the lives of a family forever. It's more important to prevent fires than fight one." Then he asked us what we thought were the most prized possessions that are sadly impossible to replace after a house fire. To the total surprise of all of us the answer was photographs because a fire can quickly destroy these pictorial records of precious family memories. Our junior fire fighters got to do some fantastic "stuff." During the Adamstown bicentennial parade in 1961, we wore black derby hats and pulled the antique pumper along the parade route. Unlike today, we were actually active in fighting a couple of brush fires using heavy Indian tanks, which were actually backpack tanks that held water which fed a hand pump nozzle to fight brush fires. One event I will always remember is our hayride when I was in tenth grade. It was the only one I ever went on as my ancient mind recalls. I will always fondly remember that day as one of the best days of my life. I shot my first pheasant that morning, played Muhlenburg in football that afternoon getting crushed (note: I was the only CU player that didn't get in the game), and that evening I went on the hayride with my girlfriend! Laughing, singing, and throwing hay at each other for a couple of hours was the order of the night. Oh, the innocence of youth! Another special memory associated with a fire company has to do with the Spring Township Fire Station in West Lawn. I always have my family for Palm Sunday dinner, and as a special treat one year I arranged for my grandchildren and their parents to go to the station for a tour. Two firemen, Jeremy and Gary, began a seminar on basic fire equipment when suddenly an ear-splitting alarm sounded. The adults thought this was part of the tour until Jeremy went rushing past me and said, "Fire, we have to leave!" The men in their gear climbed into their trucks, blasted the sirens, and went flying up the street leaving us standing there as dazed witnesses to an authentic fire call. Now here's the funny part of this story: all the kids thought this was normal since this is what they have seen on TV. Reminiscing about my time as a junior fireman and the learning experience that took place while writing this article proved to be both an enjoyable and rewarding endeavor for me. Being naïve, as most teenagers are, I didn't appreciate the training and countless hours these men and women put in to keep us all safe. I'm embarrassed to say that I took their service for granted as too many people do. If anyone didn't understand or appreciate our fire rescue people, the tragedy of 9/11 brought home respect for them all across America. My friend Jeremy, who has been a lifelong member of a local fire rescue station, succinctly stated their noble mission: "When everyone else is running out of a burning building, we're running in." There are countless memorials to "first responders" who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The Lancaster County Safety Training Center is located at 101 Champ Boulevard, Manheim. The beautiful and moving memorial shown below is the focal point of that center. Tragically every year across our country names are added to memorials in honor of our fallen heroes who gave their lives in order to protect us. Next time you see a member of one of these organizations simply say thank you to them. That simple gesture will mean the world to these brave firefighters as they can never be taken for granted. God bless you and keep you all safe. - Pete Riffle 64 The Cloud Chaser By Peter W.
