4 Earth Science: Teacher Notes What Makes Up the Earth?* NSTA Standards (5 8): A, D Objectives: Students will: identify and label the layers of the earth find and record one fact about each layer understand the general composition of the layers of the earth Suggested Web Site: Click page 15, site 1 Alternate Web Site(s): Layers of the Earth Pre-Internet Activities: Ask students the following: if it were possible to slice the earth in half, what would they expect to find inside? Explain that scientists think the earth is made up of three major layers, each one being distinctly different than the others. We live on the outermost layer of the earth. Post-Internet Activities: After students have found the names (crust, mantle, and core) and one fact about each of the main layers of the earth, briefly describe the composition of each layer. Explain that the crust is made up of solid moving plates that float on top of the molten mantle. The mantle is very hot and liquid. This is where lava comes from. The core of the earth is made up of dense heavy metals nickel and iron. The outer core is liquid nickel and iron, and the inner core is solid nickel and iron. Extensions: Direct students to brainstorm how scientists are able to determine what is inside the earth without actually going there. After brainstorming and sharing ideas, direct students to form a hypothesis. Remind students that scientists might use a variety of techniques or information to determine what is inside the earth. Then invite students to find the answer on the Internet. The suggested Web site is a good place to start. Using this lesson as a starting point, continue on to study the tectonic plates of the lithosphere. Discuss how the movement of the plates is the reason why there are earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mountains. Go even further and have students plot earthquake or volcano locations using data from the Internet (see the lesson titled, Earthquake Patterns), and then have students look for patterns. Make Your Own Word Search Puzzle Free Online Puzzle Maker Pre-Internet Activities: This activity is best done to reinforce terms to which students have already been introduced. Before doing this activity, be sure to discuss major geological concepts such as the layers of the earth, weathering and erosion, tectonic plates, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Show students how to create a word puzzle using the suggested Web site or an alternate Web site. Note: the Web site you choose to use may allow students to create a variety of different word puzzles such as crossword puzzles or word finds. Extensions: After creating the word puzzles, allow students to print them and trade them with other students to solve each other s puzzles. If you do not wish to print the puzzles, allow students to trade computers to solve each other s puzzles. Describe how the Earth s surface, called the lithosphere or crust, is broken up into several major plates that slide on top of the hot, flowing mantle underneath. The plates move independently of each other, sometimes colliding, sometimes moving apart, and sometimes sliding against each other in opposite directions. The boundaries of the plates, where the plates meet, are called faults. There are three major types of faults: divergent faults, convergent faults, and transform faults. Plate movement causes major geologic events such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Extensions: Allow students to find actual examples of each of the three major types of faults. For example, the Mid-Atlantic ridge is an example of a divergent fault. To tie this lesson to the Our World from Space lesson, ask students to think about how satellites can help scientists confirm the theory of plate tectonics. Specifically, what type of satellite data would scientists find most useful for studying this phenomenon?
