4 Maps and Globes Student Introduction Map Unit 1 Name: Date: In this unit you will learn about the different parts of maps and globes and how they are used. Look carefully at the picture of the map below. Use different-colored pencils or crayons to put an X on each of the following items: equator, prime meridian, north pole, south pole, northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere, eastern hemisphere, western hemisphere, and compass rose. 6 Unit 1 The Language of Maps and Globes Brief #1 Focus People use maps and globes to help learn about the Earth and where things are located. People have been making and reading maps for thousands of years. A map is a drawing of a place. Maps have lots of information about a particular area. Maps are usually flat and they are often drawn on paper. You can also look at maps on a computer screen. There are other kinds of maps that just exist in your head. A map that you have in your head is called a mental map. People have mental maps of all sorts of things. For example, you may have a mental map of how to get from your house to school, or the way from the cafeteria to your classroom. Usually people have mental maps of places that are very familiar to them. But you can also have a mental map of your town, country, or the world. People use maps to help them get from place to place. They also use maps to learn about the world in which they live. Globes A globe is a model of the Earth. Because the Earth is shaped like a sphere, a globe is the most accurate picture of what the world really looks like. Because maps are flat and the Earth is not, maps can distort or change the shape and distance of places. Parts of Maps and Globes There are many things on maps and globes that don t really exist on the planet. These things appear on maps and globes to help make them easier to understand. The Earth is divided into hemispheres. The prefix hemi means half, so hemisphere means half a sphere. 7 Unit 1 The Language of Maps and Globes Parts of Maps and Globes (cont.) Brief #1 (cont.) There are two imaginary lines that divide or separate the Earth into hemispheres. The equator is an imaginary line that circles the Earth halfway between the north and south poles. The north pole is the place on Earth that is the farthest north. The south pole is the place on Earth that is the farthest south. The equator divides the Earth into the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. The northern hemisphere is located north of (above) the equator. The southern hemisphere is located south of (below) the equator. The prime meridian is the imaginary line that runs vertically from the north to the south pole. The western hemisphere is located to the west (left) of the prime meridian. There are other imaginary lines that appear on maps and globes. Lines of latitude are lines that run from east to west. The equator is a line of latitude. Lines of latitude can tell you how far north or south you are of the equator. Lines of longitude run from north to south. The prime meridian is a line of longitude. Lines of longitude can tell you how far east or west you are of the prime meridian.
