One Geology as a tool for a crossborder geohazard assessment A presentation due to the occasion of the 100 th Anniversary of the HGI-CGS Dr. Marko Komac Geological Survey of Slovenia Overview Introduction Geology and human boundaries OneGeology Geohazards GH The role of GSOs in the GH management cycle the field of GH Conclusions 1
Introduction Occasion of the 100 th Anniversary of the Croatian Geological l Survey (Hrvatski geološki inštitut) t) Congratulations!!! An opportunity to revise the past cooperation between neighbouring countries in one field of geology nowadays societal very visible geohazards Geology and human boundaries Humans tend to do strange things Defining state boundaries and country borders regardless of natural conditions Geology and geological processes disregard such artificially made boundaries This is not only the opinion of geologists 2
Geology and human boundaries cont. Geological sciences and geological structures do not end at national boundaries. Working on the same planet, geologists need to communicate and share knowledge with each other, and to draw on each other s experiences. Quote from speech by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao 19 June 2007 OneGeology A project to make web-accessible the best available geological map data worldwide at a scale of about 1:1 million, as a Geological Survey contribution to the International Year of Planet Earth (and beyond!!!) Make accessible the best geological map data they have available = putting the jigsaw-puzzle together Work towards consistent standards for data and access - a consistent data architecture - schematic interoperability = leveling li or adjustment of data, especially at the border areas (long way to go, but specific cases can help to ease the thorny path) enhance and increase use and usability of our data = effectivelly solving cross-border problems (usually GH) 3
Geohazards GH Geohazard = Geologic hazard Geohazard = A geologic condition (natural or man-made) that could lead to damage or uncontrolled risk and hence poses a potential danger to life and property Geodynamic hazards, general geological h hazards, d h hydrogeological d l i lh hazards, d mining i i related hazards (by EGS definition 20 types of GH) The role of GSOs in the GH management cycle GSO 4
the field of GH (1) groundwater management The transboundary dinaric karst aquifer system between Croatia and Slovenia Istria peninsula BISTRICA (Gulf of Kvarner RIŽANA and Gulf of Trst) - (karstic groundwater resources and protection zones for GABRIJELI BUŽIN coastal areas) MLINI Transboundary aquifer systems between CRO-SLO 2000 ongoing RJEČINA SV. April 14-15, 2008, Malinska - CROATIA CA the field of GH (1) groundwater management 6
The actual common delineation of transboundary aquifers (Croatia-Slovenia) Conceptual model of transboundary aquifer systems (Croatia-Slovenia) the field of GH (1) groundwater management Future conservation and exploitation of these aquifers require mutual research activities. iti Standardized hydrogeological map produced Tansboundary water divides and aquifer system delineated. Water balance was assessed Water protection areas are extending across border and are delinated by different criteria which are not directly comparable. 7
the field of GH (2) alluvial sediment pollution Heavy metals in alluvial sediments of the Drava River Assessment of geochemical background before industrial revolution; Evaluation of anthropogenic influence on sediment and soil pollution in the Drava valley, Determination of the spatial distribution of heavy metals in soils on alluvial deposits of the Drava River in Slovenia and Croatia Alpine region Pannonian region 8
the field of GH (2) alluvial sediment pollution 134 sampling location Samples: topsoil (0-5 cm) and subsoil (20-30 cm) + 30 river sediment samples Analysis for 41 chemical elements was performed Statistical analysis (basic statictic parameters, R mode factor analysis) Geochemical maps Universal kriging with linear variogram interpolation method Three geogenic and one anthropogenic geochemical associations were established on the basis of visually indicated similarity of distribution of elemental patterns along the Drava River the field of GH (2) alluvial sediment pollution A part of the studied area (about 130 km 2 )is critically polluted according to the thresholds h set by legislation. 9
the field of GH (2) alluvial sediment pollution Spatial distribution of Lead in the Drava valley (Pannonian area) Flooded area Range: mg/kg Median: 420 mg/kg River terraces Range: mg/kg Median: 38 mg/kg Pb (mg/kg) Conclusions Two types of geohazards have been already tackled by joined teams of Slovenian and Coratian geologists groundwater aquifer management and soil pollution Topics to be addressed in the future Other types of geohazards Tighter cross-border cooperation Capacity & networking > Joining forces Knowledge transfer > cost reduction by Avoiding duplication 10
Conclusions cont. And the role of OneGeology? On-line data accessibility access to data not only to geologists, but also decission makers Data standardisation before inclusion into 1G data portal = interoperable data formats 11
