2 Natural Arctic landscape and it s many attractions provide a good base for nature tourism. It is one of the fastest growing types of tourism in the world. This is clearly reflected in the wilderness areas of northern Europe, where geotourism, hiking, kayaking, canoeing and other nature experiences are steadily gaining popularity.
3 Historical sites related to gold prospecting and mining, not to mention modern-day gold panning, are also popular among tourists.

5 The Ivalojoki River flows through a canyon up to 150 m deep, which is an ancient preglacial valley. It stretches 180 km through wilderness areas towards the Barents Sea. It passes by geologically interesting nature sites and cultural-historical attractions related to the more than 140-year history of gold mining in the area.
6 The granulite bedrock originates from sea sediment layers and volcanic ash and lava, which, during orogenesis 1.9 billion years ago, ended up deep in the Earth crust. Recrystallisation evidently formed lenses consisting of quartz, sulphides and gold. Gold was also freed up during the chemical and mechanical weathering processes. During the Quaternary glaciers eroded the rock. Gold grains mixed in with the till. Glacial melt water streams formed gravel deposits along the shores and enriched gold nuggets.
7 The gold digging history of Finnish Lapland begins with the Ivalojoki river in 1868, when the first discoveries of gold nuggets in the gravel were made there. The discovery led to a great gold rush amid the uninhabited wilderness. At its peak, close to 500 men could be counted in the area, digging and panning for gold in the hopes striking it rich. Unfortunately a truly productive gold vein was never found. Between 1870 and 1910, 464 kg of gold were discovered.
8 Tankavaara is home for the Gold Prospector Museum. Basic exhibition presents the history of gold prospecting in Finland International exhibition Golden World Annual Gold Symposium and various events (class camping) Goldpanning (indoor panning site during wintertime) Museum shop. A selection of books, maps and souvenirs.
9 Gold Prospector Museum and Natural Heritage Services (Metsähallitus), have carried out valuable work in inventorying cultural-historical sites, planning nature paths and restoring partially destroyed houses, machines and structures.
