The scientific scope of the Marine Working Group shall include but not be limited to any marine natural science or engineering research.
MARINE WORKING GROUP Scientific Foci: based on 5yr Strategic plan: Predicting and understanding rapid changes to the Arctic Ocean system Understanding biological and ecosystem processes in the Arctic and Sub-arctic seas Understanding sea ice: structure, dynamics and the Arctic system Understanding geochemical processes in the Arctic and Sub-arctic seas Increase access to paleorecord in the Arctic Ocean oups/working-groups/marineaosb
MARINE WORKING GROUP Activities Creation of ACSNet in order to carry on the legacy of iaoos. Cross-cutting Proposal Accepted by IASC June 2011 First Workshop, April 2012 Devise a common space-time framework for individual research projects combining disparate efforts to form an intensive, international and multidisciplinary research effort initially with its focus on the Greater Canada Basin and its marginal ice zone. Overcoming Barriers to Arctic Ocean Scientific Drilling: the Site Survey Challenge Workshop 30 Participants Copenhagen, Denmark October 2011 OUTCOMES: Develop a site survey strategy and planning strategy Distributed Biological Observatory OUTCOMES: In collaboration with the PAG, continue coordination of physical and biological measurements in the hotspot areas. Begin development of research teams dealing with data and publication issues. Workshop 30 Participants Sidney, BC, Canada November 2011

ARCTIC CLIMATE SYSTEM NETWORK (ACSNet) An IASC cross-cutting initiative Coordinators: Mary-Louise Timmermans (MWG) John Cassano (AWG) Pedro Elosegui (CWG) Jeremy Wilkinson (MWG) Key upcoming activity: Inaugural ACSNet Meeting, 23 April 2012, from 5:30-7:30 pm (During IPY2012 Conference, April 2012, Montreal)
ACSNet Geo-Focus, Goal, and Timing study region Goal: ACSNet aims to facilitate the coordination of existing and emerging projects to implement an intensive international crossdisciplinary study of the WA. Timing: Given the international effort that is underway or planned, the approximate timeline of ACSNet activities will be: Initial workshops: Main field phase: Synthesis effort:
o What? ACSNet Fact Sheet o Implement an intensive cross-disciplinary study of the role of the polar oceancryosphere-atmosphere in climate, with emphasis in the Western Arctic o How? o Integrate efforts into a network, series of workshops, to coordinate existing or emerging fieldwork in the Western Arctic and stimulate international collaborations o Who? o Pan-Arctic scientists, including early career, will form a Scientific Steering Group o When? o 2011/13, 2 years (IASC, phase I; phase II thru 2015) o How much? o IASC, 15k ; NERC (~$400k, Jeremy Wilkinson PI, pending)
Linking Physics to Biology: the Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO) DBO sites (red boxes) are regional hotspot transect lines and stations located along a latitudinal gradient 4 5 DBO sites are considered to exhibit high productivity, biodiversity, and overall rates of change DBO sites will serve as a change detection array for the identification and consistent monitoring of biophysical responses [modified by Karen Frey from Grebmeier et al. 2010, EOS 91] Sites occuppied by national and international entities with shared data plan
