3 The Arctic National Mapping Agencies The project involves NMAs in the Nordic countries, Russia, USA and Canada Many definitions of the Arctic Area The Arctic is to cover the Arctic regions of the involved participating countries, as defined by the countries themselves. - NMAs - April

6 Arctic Why Arctic? Wide array of spatial data around the Arctic Datasets are distributed throughout many organisations often not integrated or coordinated Arctic would allow for more robust management and manipulation of data for both research and management purposes. April

9 The Arctic Arctic - user driven approach - Four main categories of users are identified: The Arctic Council Working Groups (AC WGs). Research groups within the International Polar Year and other scientific communities engaged in Arctic research. Government and governmental authorities involved in decision making processes concerning the Arctic. Media and the public including NGOs. April

17 Status of Arctic project, April 2012 The Project plan and Project Organisation were approved in April 2011 The Steering Committee is up and running one representative from each NMA and users. Project Management Group is taking care of daily work (1,5 man year, Norway and Sweden) The Technical Working group started their work in September 2011 scales for services are 1: and smaller Advisory Group is active Establishment of the MoUs between the National Mapping Agencies in is in process The Board of the Project met in Reykjavik on March 30, 2012 (Directors Generals) Support from AC, European Environmental Agency and EuroGeographics April

18 Finally Input from the user community is of utmost importance for a successful result With an increasing focus on the Arctic, good reference map data is invaluable Sustainable NMAs produces the best reference data available. April
