During the day take a photograph of each of the following: * A closeup of a plant or animal to show its specific characteristics. * A panorama to highlight the type of world heritage area you are investigating. * A ground level photo highlighting the nature of important features eg size, shape and colour of trees * An oblique angle photo to show a three dimensional view of the environment. Places in the distance look smaller than those in the foreground. These photos can printed at home added to this worksheet. Students should describe some features identified in each photograph. Section B - ECHO POINT STOP: 1. Use the interpretive signs to complete the following:- Landforms: Millions of years ago huge swamps gradually turned to c _ after being covered with vast amounts of sand. Massive uplifting of the area left an exposed p (not really mountains) known as the Blue Mountains. The Landscape Today: The shape of the cliffs are formed because soft c l _ layers are eroded and collapse the rock above. List: Jamison Valley, Kings Tableland, Three Sisters, Kedumba River, Mount Solitary. Description: * A major Jamison Valley erosional feature * Vertical rock columns * Dissected plateau * A sandstone plateau * A mesa Muggadah Dreaming: The people living around Echo Point are the G u n. The valley is called G e d _ and is subject to Muggadah Dreaming. According to Muggadah Dreaming, there were actually sisters, not just three. Popular legend has it that three sisters were turned to s to stop their capture by three brothers of a Nepean tribe. They couldn t be turned back from stone. They became the 3 Sisters. The cultural significance to the Gundungurra people, and environmental damage (erosion), means c _ is banned on the Three Sisters. Mount Solitary, K, is said to have once been a sacred aboriginal men s initiation site. White Settlement: The first British to cross the mountains were B _, L _ & W in A rail line was completed, through Katoomba, to Mt Victoria in 18. In 1877, Katoomba was named after the aboriginal term K e _ (shining falling water). John North mined for oil-shale and c _ in The area was the state s main tourist attraction in the 19 s. The Giant Stairway and Prince Henry Cliff Walk were built during the 19 s. Since 2000 a lot of money has been put into tourism - including the recent $30m redevelopment of the Scenic Railway, originally known as the M _ D. World Heritage: Find the following dates for these events:- Echo Point Reserve Blue Mts National Park World Heritage List The Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area was mainly recognised for its outstanding f. It has been described as a natural laboratory for the evolution of e. More than 90 different eucalypt species are found here - some % of all eucalypt species in the world. They grow in a great variety of communities, from tall c _ forests (rainforests) to the s mallee shrublands (heathlands) on the exposed plateaus. Page 3
