2 B USINESS Introduction NAME to Quantum GIS Friday 30th September 2016 LED BY: Chris Panter (Ecologist, Footprint) Those wanting to start with GIS software; also those with some basic familiarity with GIS but not with QGIS. COST: 130 exc VAT 156 inc VAT N.B. To make the most of the time delegates will need to bring a laptop with QGIS installed. Guidance on installation can be provided in advance of the course. This course is designed as an introduction to GIS in general, and QGIS in particular, with a focus on ecological applications. Quantum GIS is an increasingly popular free software alternative to more expensive mapping systems. It is a great system for a range of tasks from simple plotting of GPS data and mapping, through to complex spatial interrogation of data. The course would cover: Types of GIS data; the formats, good data structure and uses. Introduction to QGIS; software layout and use of workspaces. Creating and editing data; including importing collected GPS data. Map production, styling and datasets available. We aim to cover the basic functions and give attendees confidence in using the software to be able to explore these for themselves and use the wealth of online help. Chris leads on all GIS and large data analysis at Footprint, having specialised in this area for the last 7 years. Chris has extensive experience mapping species data, using Ordnance Survey data, environmental data, GPS bird tracking data and satellite based imagery analysis. Chris has previously worked with ArcGIS, therefore he is able to assist those who have previous experience in ArcGIS.

The course will address: How disturbance impacts birds The relative impact of various activities Species that are vulnerable to disturbance Ways to manage or minimise disturbance The course draws widely from published research and on-going work by Footprint Ecology. Course participants will each receive a CD with reference material and reference lists. A range of handouts will also be provided. Durwyn is a director at Footprint Ecology with a particular interest in bird disturbance. The course will draw on our work across a range of sites (including the Humber Estuary, Nene Valley, the Wash, the Thames Estuary, North Kent, the Solent, the Exe and the North Norfolk Coast), drawing together bird ecology studies, visitor surveys, modelling and planning advice.

4 B USINESS Counting NAME & Surveying Visitors Friday 18th November 2016 LOCATION : Wareham, Dorset LED BY: Dr Durwyn Liley & Chris Panter Those involved in site and access management of wildlife sites; those with an interest in recording numbers of visitors and what they do. COST: 120 excl VAT 144 incl VAT Understanding access patterns in the countryside is important for site managers, policy makers and planners. This course gives an overview of different approaches to recording visitor numbers and activity. The course will consider the importance of counting visitors and will cover survey design, accuracy and use of visitor count data. We will explore the use of car-park counts, direct counts, automated counters and questionnaire-based surveys. The day will be largely office based, but participants will have the opportunity to test equipment such as automated counters and GPS units in the field. The course will be useful to those wishing to commission and understand visitor monitoring. Footprint Ecology is the foremost practitioner of visitor surveys at countryside sites in the UK. This course allows you to tap into our experience of designing, conducting and analysing over 70 visitor surveys in the past ten years. Durwyn Liley is a director of Footprint and has been involved in all the visitor work undertaken so far. Chris Panter is an ecologist specialising in data and GIS, and since joining Footprint he has worked on 18 visitor surveys.

Vegetarian and special diets can be catered for please let us know if you have any special requirements. All courses are at our Dorset office in Wareham Forest. Cancellation Footprint Ecology reserve the right to cancel courses due to unforeseen circumstances. Where courses are cancelled by Footprint any fees paid will be credited in full. If you find you have to cancel, we will do our best to fill your place on the course, however if the cancellation is less than 14 days before the course and we cannot fill your space, we cannot refund your fee. How to pay For organisations and companies we can raise an invoice to be paid within 30 days by BACS or cheque.
