2 Increasing Added Value with INSPIRE and SDI Components INSPIRE In 2007, the European Commission issued directive 2007/2/EC, which deals with the establishment of an Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe, or INSPIRE, for short. Its purpose is to create a uniform spatial database for Europe, that can be accessed via geoservices. To this end, member states are obligated to provide, in stages, interoperable, environmentally relevant spatial data, along with the attendant metainformation. The aim is to simplify the cross-border utilisation of spatial data in Europe and to create a basis for political decision making in Europe.
