1 Open Source Geo-Spatial Tools and Mobile Device for Canal Network Digitization Paavan Kumar Reddy Gollapalli Young Professional, ICID(WG-SDTA) Agricultural Engineer, AMIE PGD in RS & GIS (ISRO)
2 Introduction Now a days capturing of coordinates is possible with all devices which are connected to satellites Purchasing of GPS device especially for single work is not viable at all times because of economic constraints With the use of mobile devices canal network digitization is possible and also the wealth condition of the structures and encroachments identification is done through location where it is happened.
3 Overview of Presentation Case Study 1: Guntur Channel Medium Irrigation Project Canal Network Digitization using Mobile Device and GPS: Water Use Efficiency Studies Experiences (WALAMTARI, Hyderabad) Case Study 2: Bhupathipalem Medium Irrigation Project : Canal Network Digitization Studies Using UN-ASIGN application (Water Resource Dept., Andhra Pradesh) Accuracy of the work Adaptability at Field Level Conclusions
4 Case Study 1: Guntur Channel Medium Irrigation Project Canal Network Digitization using Mobile Device and GPS: Water Use Efficiency Studies Experiences (WALAMTARI, Hyderabad) Authors G. Paavan Kumar Reddy, Anita Yadav, DEE, WALAMTARI, Hyderabad, K. Yella Reddy, Vice President (ICID), Ex Director (A&R), WALAMTARI, Hyderabad, L Narayan Reddy, NIT, Warangal & Ex Director General, WALAMTARI, Hyderabad, aproop93@gmail.com

12 Case Study 2: Bhupathipalem Medium Irrigation Project : Canal Network Digitization Studies Using UN-ASIGN (Water Resource Dept., Andhra Pradesh) Authors G. Paavan Kumar Reddy, Trainee, paavankrg@gmail.com Gopala Krishna, Assistant Executive Engineer, Musurumilli Division, Water Resource Department, A.P Subramanyeshwara Rao, Executive Engineer, Musurumilli Division, Water Resource Department, A.P Other Assistant Executive Engineer, Musurumilli Division, Water Resource Department, A.P
13 Data used and Methodology Ground truth data collection (Mobile App) Mapping of Canal Network using QGIS Data Storing in UN-ASIGN website Canal Network Data Processing (photo2kmz) Canal Network Digitization (Add Path)
14 UN-ASIGN working
15 Plate showing the full view of Structures captured in Bhupathipalem in UN-ASIGN website
16 Plate showing the view of one structure in Bhupathipalem
17 Plate showing the editing view of attribute data of structure
18 Plate showing the co-ordinates on the photographof structure
19 Length of Canals Surveyed Content Length/Number Total number of canals (Main canal, Distributaries, Minors, Sub-minors) Total length of the canals No. of Structures captured as photographs and stored in UN-ASIGN crowd source 24 No. 180 Km 813 No.
20
21 Accuracy of the work Purpose of work has to be clarified Mobile device is also giving nearer accuracy of GPS device The best example for this one is UN-SIGN mobile application Digitization of canals (Depends on person to person) Mobile device showing accuracy of 4 m Courtesy: UN-ASIGN
22 Adaptability at Field Level The average distance covered by each person /day is 8 9 km Nowadays all the field level staff (Luskars/Work Inspectors) have smart phones and are well versed with its operation Field staff are very well acquainted about their irrigation schemes All the Officers of irrigation department are now equipped with minimum one computer Engineers (Assistant/Assistant Executive Engineers) have to to improve their skills/knowledge on QGIS and Google Earth
23 Conclusions Advantages No Investment is required from the time of collection of data till processing of data Processing of data can be done in open source GIS softwares (QGIS) and they are user friendly also Ground truth data (photographs) can tell the current situation of the canals Efficient use of man power at field level and we will get precise work
24 Conclusions Limitations Mobile takes time to get connected with location services for getting the co-ordinates for photograph Sometimes accuracy goes beyond 20m to some thousand meters at initial stage Battery in the mobile device gets dead early because of continuous usage Sometimes co-ordinates for the photographs are not created because of poor satellite connection or obstructions like trees/forest Attribute data collection
25 Acknowledgments For Case Study 1: The authors acknowledge the financial support received from the National Water Mission, Govt. of India and the Water and Land Management Training and Research Institute (WALMATARI), Hyderabad, Govt. of Telangana, India for giving support to conduct survey at Guntur Channel Medium Irrigation Project. For Case Study 2 : Executive Engineer, Bhupathipalem Medium Irrigation Project, Water Resources Department, Govt. Of Andhra Pradesh for conducting the survey. UN-Asign crowd-source photos mobile app
