4 Map Tools & Resources WE DELIVER! Oliver D. World and his partner, Ivanna Gough, are the busy owners of Excellent Delivery Service (EDS). They promise to deliver anything, anywhere in the world, anytime! In their business, they would be lost without these tools: A globe is a model of the Earth. Like the Earth, it is a sphere. It shows land and water formations. Find the globe. Color the land green and the water blue. A map is a flat picture of a place. There are many different kinds of maps. Draw a red border around the map. A scale is a tool that tells distances on a map. A scale shows how the measurements on a map compare to the measurements of the real place. Circle the scale in yellow. A compass rose is a tool that tells directions on a map or globe. Find the compass rose and trace it in orange. Add the four missing directions: NE, NW, SE, and SW. An atlas is a collection of different maps put together in a book. There are many kinds of atlases. Some contain different kinds of maps of the same location (such as political maps, climate maps, product maps, population maps, topographic maps, and so on). Color the cover of the atlas purple. Use with page 11. Name Basic Skills Map Skills & Geography Copyright 1998 by Incentive Publications, Inc., Nashville, TN.
5 Map Tools & Resources ANYTHING! ANYWHERE! Help Ivanna and Oliver choose the right tools for their deliveries. On the line provided, write the tools they will need to complete each delivery or to solve each problem they have. Choose from map, globe, atlas, scale, or compass rose. Use the descriptions on page 10 to help you. 1. A pizza has been ordered for delivery to 123 Cheesy Street. 2. Ivanna and Oliver must get a crocodile from Florida to a zoo in China. They are trying to decide if they should go by land or by sea. 3. The U.S. government wants to send a new flag to the U.S. embassy in every South American country. Oliver needs to find out how many flags to pack. 4. They are going to be picking up 4,000 crates of bananas in Costa Rica to deliver to a pudding factory in New Mexico. They need to find out if their cargo might get rained on in Costa Rica. 5. They need to deliver hot dogs to Tibet. They know how high their delivery plane can fly, but they need to know if it will fly high enough to get over the Himalayan Mountains. 6. Someone has requested that a shipment of microwave ovens be delivered to the Arctic and to Antarctica. Oliver is trying to see how many different ways he can get to these places. 7. They ve been hired to deliver three dozen squealing pigs to Indonesia. They need to find out exactly where Indonesia is! 8. Ivanna is trying to figure out how far her plane will need to travel and in what direction she must fly to take sunflower seeds from Sacramento, California to Houston, Texas. 9. Oliver is searching for a route to deliver souvenirs from the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City to some cowboy fans in Norway. 10. An employee is leaving the office in Kanopolis, Kansas, with a load of whipped cream to deliver across the city. The delivery girl is waiting for Oliver to give her directions. Use with page 10.
