2 The Mangrove Ecotone Region: Location and definition An extensive region of the Everglades with diffuse/undefined watersheds it is limited by phosphorus availability due to lack of terrigenous sediment input and reduced freshwater flow; 25 km 5 km both, low terrestrial P input and natural water flow spatial patterns, control the spatial distribution of vegetation and limits plant productivity, which is dominated by mangrove forests:

9 Because of this hydrological connectivity the Mangrove Ecotone has been identified as a source of Total Organic Carbon and Nitrogen to Florida Shelf water Blackwater River Gulf Islands Inland Waterway Mangrove Rivers SRS6 Shark River Slough Taylor Slough Whitewater Bay Mangrove forests work as TOC source Most of N (>90%) and P (~90%) are in ORGANIC form Total Organic Nitrogen (TON) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) concentrations increase at the Mangrove Rivers and Whitewater Bay regions by the production of organic matter in the mangrove ecotone There is a hydrological control of TOC & DOM quality Boyer et 2006; Maie et al 2006;
10 Mangrove Organic Matter footprint in Florida Bay: Taraxerol Taraxerol concentration in Florida Bay surface sediments Mangrove leaves contain exceptionally high abundance of Taraxerol up to 1.4 mg/g More than 60% of Organic Matter is derived from terrestrial mangrove contributions in the North East Section of Florida Bay Rabbit Key (RB) Ninemile Key (NB) Shark River Slough Taylor Slough Trout Cove (TC) Duck Key (DK) Russel Key (RK) Butternut Key (BK) Bob Allen Key (BA) Approximately 12% in the Central and Southwest sections Organic matter from the mangrove ecotone has less influence on Florida Bay than the Western Region Xu et al 2006
11 Large spatial scale transects studies show that Soils are calcareous along the Sloughs Bulk Density (g cm -3 ) / % Organic Matter Soil bulk density is lower in freshwater marsh environments and along the Shark River Slough The most dense soils are located in Florida Bay. 12 Soil Phosphorous concentration - Spatial Patterns in LTER sites SRS 6 SRS 5 SRS 4 Estuarine Freshwater Decrease in soil TP from estuarine to freshwater environment in both transects TS/Ph 8 TS/Ph 6 TS/Ph 7 TS/Ph 7 Highest value (300 ug cm -3 ) is close to the mouth of Shark River (SRS-6) Spatial trend is similar for 3 forms of P most likely to be available to plants: Inorganic P, Inorganic P bound to Fe and Mg minerals, Ca-bound inorganic P Chambers et al 2006
13 Water column TP and TN concentration - Spatial Patterns ENSO show strong spatial differences and seasonality associated to changes in salinity (rainy season) Interannual variation due to large scale climatic events (ENSO) Maximum values of TP are low (1.7 um) in comparison to Childers et 2006
14 Estimated N budgets (mg N m -2 y -1 ) There is currently more detailed information in Taylor than in the Shark River Slough The estimated net annual import of N in Taylor Slough is 649 mg m -2 y -1 There is limited information on groundwater N and P fluxes from coastal regions inland Mangrove Ecotone 465 (Precipitation) (Surface water)?? (Groundwater [In-Out]? XXX (Surface water) Shark River Slough 529 (Surface water) Net Annual Import 649 Taylor River Slough 133 (Groundwater [In- Out] 478 (Surface water) 465 (Precipitation) Rudnick et al 1999; Sutula et al 2001, 2003)
15 Denitrification rates (mg N m -2 y -1 ) But there is uncertainty in budget estimates due to a lack of in situ denitrification and N fixation studies (i.e., Taylor) Current work in Taylor River (Rivera-Monroy et al unpublished results) is updating box model (Sutula et al 2003) estimates using field data Mangrove Ecotone Denitrification, Nitrogen Fixation Shark River Slough Taylor River Slough 1104, Denitrification Denitrification rates are similar in Shark and Taylor Rivers indicating N immobilization in soils N fixation is greater than denitrification in Rivera-Monroy et al in preparation
16 Denitrification in Taylor River (mg N m -2 y -1 ) is limited by in situ NO 3 (<2µM) and PO 4 (<1 µm) concentrations Mangrove Ecotone Denitrification rates in Taylor River are [ NO 3 ] limited as result of low in situ concentrations Enrichment studies show that Nitrification is limited by [PO 4 ] availability in soil pore waters Dentirification 8585 (@3x in situ [N0 3 ]) Shark River Slough 1104 (in situ) Taylor River Slough There is a large potential Denitrication at NO 3 > 30 um Rivera-Monroy et al in preparation
17 Findings about N transformations in the Mangrove Ecotone N input from the Gulf of Mexico exceeds input from upstream the Mangrove Ecotone region Everglades, and associated mangrove ecotone N input into Florida Bay, represents only 2% of total input Taylor Slough sequesters most of N in surface water The mangrove ecotone, overall, immobilizes N as indicated by the low denitrification rates, which are regulated by P availability Gulf of Mexico N Flux studies are needed to estimate net exchages between Shark River Slough and Gulf of Mexico coastal waters Need to detemine nutrient inputs through ground water flow Rudnick et al 1999; Sutula et al (2001, 2003); Davis et al (2001, 2003)Rivera-Monroy et al in preparation Florida Bay

22 Example of Coastal Transgression: interaction between the mangrove ecotone and the White Zone, particularly in the Southeast Region Closely associated to the mangrove ecotone is the White Zone, a region of low productivity characterized by low vegetation cover and canopy height Over the past 50 years, the interior boundary of the white zone has encroached inland 1.5 km; maximum shifts occurred in areas cut off by canals from upstream fresh water (1.8 k,-turkey Point) In contrast to other coastal regions in the Neotropics there is a net gain in mangrove area at this boundary Ross et al 2000, 2001
23 Conclusions and Research Directions Ecotone productivity is high and shows significant spatial differences -The scrub mangrove forests reflect suppressed levels of aboveground productivity and seedling development, as influenced by minimal P supply from either the oligotrophic marshes of the southern Everglades or Florida Bay -Production and organic soil accretion in the mangrove forests of the coastal Everglades are controlled by phosphorus availability Productivity is strongly regulated by the interaction of marine phosphorus sources and water residence time Freshwater management has had and will have major effects on productivity patterns, particularly in the Taylor Region; changes in salinity in the Shark River area as result of freshwater diversion will potentially modify vegetation boundaries Low nutrient conditions are expected to enhance belowground productivity by mangroves, which will maintain peat production and soil elevation increases ultimately enhancing the ability of these low salinity forests to maintain themselves against sea-level rise. Need to understand the relative importance of P groundwater sources in controlling productivity
