4 Chapter 1: Getting Started 1 This chapter provides data overview and explains the file names used, and provides you with instructions for installing the data. In this chapter: Overview File Names Installing Global Gazetteer

5 Overview Overview The Global Gazetteer product contains information relating to settlements in 235 countries around the world. The data covers settlements ranging in size from Cities down to Hamlets. In some countries the data is further enhanced with locations representing the central point of Administrative Areas, Administrative places, postal, census and built up areas and Neighbourhood areas. The Global Gazetteer product is ideal for search, basic geocoding, proximity analysis and in support of analytics work when utilised with other datasets. File Names The Global Gazetteer is available in Mapinfo format and pipe delimited text format. The MapInfo Tab Format data set can be used for data display in MapInfo Professional 15.2 onwards. Data Layers The data file contain five different file types: File Name Global_Gazetteer.DAT Global_Gazetteer.ID Global_Gazetteer.IND Global_Gazetteer.MAP Global_Gazetteer.TAB File Type Data file Identification file Index file Map file Tabular file Note :In order to use the data correctly, you must have access to all of the files in the file set. All the files for each file set must be located in the same directory. Installing Global Gazetteer Note Make sure that you choose a disk with enough space. 1. Locate the zip file and unzip it in a folder where you want to keep your data files 2. Once unzipped, Customers receiving MapInfo Tab files can open them directly with MapInfo Professional through Open dialog command of MapInfo Professional. Customers receiving data in pipe delimited Text files can load the data into a database to access the content. The installation process is complete. 5 Global Gazetteer
