The Social Life of Location David Sonnen September 2008

Three Transformations Traditional Cartography B.C. - ~ 1980 Maps represent location and attributes Portable, persistent communication/ reference tool Digital Maps/ GIS/ CAD -- ~ ~ 2002 Convert maps to digital maps Separate geometry and attributes Thousands of specialists and users Digital Location-specific Data -- ~2002 Present Digital location-specific data becomes hugely diverse and part of IT infrastructure. 2-way communication with users Users organize and use the data as needed 100s of millions of users

3 rd Transformation: What Happened, Rev 1.0

3 rd Transformation: What Happened, Rev 2.0

Evolutionary Timeline

3 rd Transformation Organizing Frameworks 2 nd Transform Personal interest Geospatial processes 3rd Transform Personal interest Personal network Communities of interest Many structured processes

Some Changes 2 nd Transform Geospatial is primary focus ~3,000,000 specialists and users Spatial data developed project by project Proprietary technology and data Long time lag between initial data and use 3 rd Transform Geospatial elements part of IT infrastructure Users: 100s of millions Spatial data developed for broad use Open technology, data and standards Near real-time data. Some data provided by users

Examples: Spatial Processes Engineering GIS Business Consumer Spatial data capture/ maintenance Planning Design Specification Construction Operation/ Maintenance Decommission Spatial data capture/ maintenance Cartography Spatial analysis Land use planning Land mgt. Environmental assessment Asset Mgt. CRM Logistics Marketing BPM/ BAM Risk assessment Risk mitigation Dispatch Master data mgt. Operational analytics Context Locating Routing Directions Local Web experience Personal navigation Entertainment Education

3 rd Transform Adjacent Technologies Enterprise Solution Platforms Examples: Oracle Fusion,.NET, Websphere, Netweaver Enterprise Search Collaboration tools Web platforms (MSN, Google, Yahoo, AOL/MapQuest) Business intelligence Business Process Management/ Business Activity Monitoring (BPM/ BAM) Hardware and networking

Social Life of Location The key points: Information technology always evolves in the directions that people think and act. Location is an integral part of the ways that people think and act Digital spatial information is becoming cheap, ubiquitous and near real-time. Users are becoming data providers Location-specific data is becoming part of broad social fabrics and communities in new ways

Things That May Change Knowledge Local knowledge Location of knowledge Knowledge ecosystems Decision Processes More automated Deeper insights Lower costs Finer granularity

Things That May Change Distance Geo-distance Social distance Community Boundaries Place Social network

Futures Spatial information and technologies will be integrated into enterprise IT assets, then will merge into the IT infrastructure. Rich, location-specific data will be a normal part of IT systems Location-specific analysis and operational information will be routine and unremarkable Location-specific data will generated by a wide range of technologies, including GPS, cellular, RFID, WAN and networked sensors. Users will contribute, organize and use spatial data with and without expert help. Locating will cease to be a one-way activity.

Considerations Acknowledge and understand the social and cultural changes that ubiquitous spatial information makes De-skill applications Most users do not have nor do they want to have geospatial skills. Acknowledge Open Source as part of IT strategy and skills Data, not technology, will drive value Focus on people who use technologies and the ways that they use it. Focus on real value for end users. Find ways to involve users directly. Acknowledge users as valuable data providers Pay attention to standards
