Asset Management Planning GIS and Asset Management Integration Readiness Assessment
With too little data, you won t be able to make any conclusions that you trust. With loads of data you will find relationships that aren t real. You need experience solving real world problems, because there are a lot of importation limitations to statistics you learned in school. Douglas C Merrill, Former Google CIO 2

It is helpful to understand the level of commitment necessary and gaps to achieve integration goals. GIS and Asset Management Readiness Assessment 15
Rewards for asset management integrated with GIS includes simplistic views for planning, executing and measuring work. Not being prepared properly for the integration has risks. Major Project Delays New, scaled or modified IT infrastructure implementations may be required Data cleansing may be necessary to establish data good enough to perform work planning and execution. Data creation may be necessary to perform planning and execution. The creation or improvement of Asset Mgmt-GIS record relationships may be necessary. GIS technology may be used differently than ever before and gaps identified Change Management Challenges Limited awareness of magnitude of business user process involving spatial technology. How familiar is the asset management audience with GIS tools. Uniqueness of GIS datasets, especially as it relates to connected networks / topology rules may require education. Mobile specific Field user confidence and buy-in drops if maps are not up to date. Variance can exist in expectations of commercial tools making it harder to meet those. Investments Necessary at Inopportune Times Project complexities rise during primary build tasks and GIS related investments at that time may be costly to budget and schedule. Disregard of small errors in sample data can lead to systemic problems. Errors include spatial accuracy, attribute accuracy, relationships between Asset Mgmt-GIS. Complicated systems where technical details start overriding business objectives GIS and Asset Management Readiness Assessment 16
Recognizing the gaps between current state and state necessary to achieve integration goals allows prioritization and planning. GIS and Asset Management Readiness Assessment 17
