8 GIS as Part of the IM Challenge The current generation of GIS tools has made it relatively easy to create sophisticated maps Consequently, there has been an explosion in terms of the volume and usage of spatial data In most cases, this has not been subjected to accepted data management best practices Consequently, spatial data may be accorded more trust than it deserves

9 GIS as Part of the IM Challenge Major decisions are made on the basis of the spatial data being presented There can be a significant business impact as a result of poor spatial data management practice: Data of unknown or dubious quality Out of date or incomplete information Data from multiple sources displayed with different projections Multiple subscriptions to the same data source

12 More recently, GIS has emerged as an important tool in enterprise Information Management (IM) solutions. GIS plays a role in data: Inventory Integration Quality Workflows and Processes Interoperability Standards are the foundation of these.

13 Inventory What data do I have? Where is it? Do I own it? Do I have the right to use it? What is the history of the data?

16 Integration Integrate data from different sources to generate cross enterprise reports and exports. Users want to access these through a mapbased interface: How much production per well? Cost and revenues per well, field, lease? Drilling cost, progress against schedule, resource records? Maintenance/safety records at the well head?

18 Quality One of the most important aspects of any E&P IM solution is the quality of the underlying data There are many examples of poor decisions being made or opportunities being missed as a result of lowquality data Companies are beginning to invest heavily in assessing, improving, and recording the quality of data GIS technology is increasingly being used to present the quality of critical data to the end user

21 Workflows and Processes It is important to capture the knowledge of the organization through repeatable workflows and processes GIS can provide the focal point for the initiation of processes and tracking of decisions

23 Interoperability Users need to run their analytical applications against the most current data available A map based interface is ideal for allowing users to select data from their area of interest and promote it to their application of choice GIS is often the interface that sits on top of middleware solutions for data movement

25 Standards for Data Management Standards organizations such as PPDM and PODS provide the foundation for IM solutions Standards enable: Integration Quality programs Effective business processes Interoperability

26 Summary The use of GIS for data presentation and analysis has grown tremendously This has resulted in significant data management issues with a business impact We need to apply data management best practices to GIS data GIS can be part of the IM solution not just part of the problem
