7 What GEO does: To accomplish this mission, GEO works to (i) promote broad and open sharing of Earth observation data globally, (ii) coordinate strategies and investments in observing capabilities; (iii) develop an information architecture to enable sharing of data and information, (iv) and develop new integrative initiatives to deliver services tailored to specific end-user needs, creating and fostering the connection between data providers and users. 7

9 Current Description GEO will advocate the value of Earth observations, engage communities and deliver data and information in support of Energy and Mineral Resources Management by enhancing the discovery, development and sustainable production of mineral and renewable energy resources; in order to facilitate substantial increases in the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix, through usable, actionable information on resource assessment, monitoring and forecasting of intermittent energy sources, including solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, geo-thermal power and biomass.

14 SC European data hub of the GEOSS information system Specific Challenge: Global approach for sustained operation, continuity & interoperability of the GEOSS information system Need also to strengthen the access to EO at regional level To overcome the fragmentation of the European landscape of existing public & private EO data infrastructures To harvest available resources from relevant GEOSS data infrastructures in Europe and in particular from the 14 distributed Copernicus data infrastructures.

17 Possible future DG RTD activities beyond European strategy regarding the international dimension of Earth observation and related R&I needs and benefits Targeted investments for boosting the development of a market of Earth observation services based on the exploitation of GEOSS data. 18 EU R&I for marketable global Earth observation information, services and products Workshop, Brussels September Builds on "Engaging the Private Sector in GEO" workshop (September 2014) & Copernicus Data Value Chain workshop (April 2016) - Forward-looking workshop, take stock of new ideas and business models, necessary framework conditions, innovation deals. - Three main themes to be addressed: 1. To characterise the current EO market in Europe and globally and its future trends (new EO services and products); 2. To identify R&I actions in support to the delivery of new EO services and products and definition of appropriate measures 3. To elaborate a mechanism for consulting/involving the European commercial sector towards GEO and Copernicus. 18
