2 Volume: Amount of space that something occupies. It is measured in litres 2.-What is matter? Everything that surrounds us is made up of matter. The air, the water, the rocks, animals, plants, everything. We can define matter as all that has mass (can be weighed) and occupies a space (volume). Activity 1. Two students are arguing in class because one of them thinks that the air is not matter. Do you agree? Why? I agree with him, because I don t agree with him, because.. The unit of mass in the International System of Unit (SI) is the Kilogram (kg). We use submultiples of the kg: gram (g), decigram (dg), centigram (cg) ands miligram (mg). Mass is measured with a scale. Volume is the space that a body occupies. The SI unit is the cubic metre (m 3 ). We also use the cubic decimetre (dm 3 ) and the cubic centimetre (cm 3 ). The volume of solid bodies, liquids and gases can be measured with a measuring cylinder. The capacity of a vessel is the maximum volume that it can contain. 4 Activity 3. A measuring cylinder contains 30 ml of water. A metal ball is placed in the cylinder and the level of the water goes up to 40 ml. What is the volume of the ball? 4.- Density The density of a substance is the relationship between its mass and the volume it occupies. Density = Mass / Volume Activity 4.- Discuss with your partner and write down the answers to the following questions: a) Which weighs more, a Kg of white cork or a Kg of iron? Why? b) What has more volume, the Kg of cork or the Kg of iron? c) What has more density cork or iron? Activity 5.- If you mix water and oil in the same recipient, oil float on the water. Why? 5 4.-Classification of matter Matter can be classified into mixtures and pure substances. On the one hand, mixtures can be classified into heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. On the other hand, pure substances can be classified into elements and compounds. MIXTURES are combinations of two or more substances which have different specific properties. Their chemical composition is variable. Homogeneous mixtures are mixtures which you cannot see the different components. Examples: a fruit juice, the air, water and salt. Heterogeneous mixtures are mixtures in which you can see the different components. Examples: a fruit salad, granite, water and oil. IES Rafael Pérez Estrada.1ºBil 5
