1 Senior Managing Scientist Polymer Science & Materials Chemistry 149 Commonwealth Drive Menlo Park, CA (650) tel Professional Profile Trained as a polymer scientist and organic chemist, Dr. Breitenkamp provides a wide range of chemistry, polymer science, and surface science expertise applicable to medical devices, consumer electronics, and intersecting products including wearable electronics, point of care diagnostics, and other integrated devices. His extensive polymer chemistry and polymer materials characterization knowledge has supported product development at all stages including design, materials selection, and performance validation. Using a variety of analytical chemistry techniques, he also specializes in the compositional identification of contaminants, having specific experience with extractable and leachable compounds to assess polymer biocompatibility. Dr. Breitenkamp also has hands-on experience preparing and testing materials for biological applications including: biocompatible and biodegradable polymers, polymer therapeutic and diagnostic agents, polymer nanoparticles, bioconjugation, tissue engineering, hydrogels, 3D bioprinting, and in vitro and in vivo testing of polymer materials. In the area of environmental technology, he has experience preparing and modifying polymer membranes for water purification, conductive polymers, and organic photovoltaic device fabrication. He also has extensive coatings formulation and testing experience including emulsion polymer synthesis, latex film formation, and anti-fouling coatings. Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Breitenkamp co-founded and served as Chief Technology Officer of Intezyne Technologies, a biotechnology company focused on the development of advanced, polymer nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery. As Intezyne's CTO, Dr. Breitenkamp invented novel synthetic strategies to produce functional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and amphiphilic block copolymers. He also led four preclinical development programs including polymer micelle-encapsulated iron oxide nanoparticles (MRI contrast agent), small molecule drugs (targeted chemotherapy), amyloid-beta peptides (Alzheimer's vaccine), and DNA/RNA therapeutics (gene therapy). After his tenure at Intezyne, Dr. Breitenkamp joined The Scripps Research Institute where he initiated efforts to develop new classes of conductive polymers and hybrid polymer-virus nanoparticles. In his previous consulting practice, he gained practical product development experience working with clients in the medical device, drug delivery, and cleantech space. A prolific innovator, Dr. Breitenkamp is listed as an inventor on 21 patent families that include 26 issued US patents.
