1 SARGONIC AND PRE-SARGONIC TABLETS IN THE JOHN RYLANDS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY by BENJAMIN R FOSTER DEPARTMENT OF NEAR EASTERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES, YALE UNIVERSITY n his Catalogue of Sumerian Tablets in the lohn Rylands Library I (Manchester, 1932) T. Fish included twenty-seven inventory numbers1 of tablets which he believed were older in date than the time of the kings of Ur (c.2050 BC). Fish's publication was a notable contribution to Assyriology because it made available to specialists 884 Sumerian tablets of the third millennium BC, most of which had not been published previously. In the half century that has passed since Fish published his book, considerable progress has been made in understanding Sumerian documents of this type and Fish's copies of the pre-ur Dynasty tablets in the Catalogue can in many respects be improved upon. The purpose of this publication is to continue his work by providing a transliteration2 of all pre-ur Dynasty tablets in the John Rylands University Library collection. The tablets may be dated as follows: Pre-Sargonic Nos. 1, 22 Early Sargonic Nos. 8,11 Late Sargonic Nos. 2-7, 9, 10, 12-14, 16-18, 20, 21, 23, 25-7 Post-Sargonic No. 192 Ur Ill No. 24 (not included below) The provenance of the tablets can be guessed only from internal evidence, as none came from a controlled excavation. 'NOS. 11 and 15 are the same tablet. 2~he following special notation has been used for the figures expressing the amount of grain used to produce various grades of beer: Text Transliteration ka5 l (bariga) 10 (slla) ka5 716 ka5 l (bariga) ka5 616 ka5 50 (sila) ka5 516 ka5 30 (slla) ka5 316 The sign transliterated as X is as
2 458 THE JOHN RYLANDS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY The writer would assign Umma as the provenance of Nos. 2-17,21, 23,25-7' and Girsu as the provenance of No. 1 and possibly Nos. 18 and 20. The provenance of the others is too uncertain to guess. With the exception of Nos. 7 and 19, which are partially or wholly in Akkadian, all the tablets are written in Sumerian. Catalogue 1. Pre-Sargonic (Year 1' of Uruinimgina?); from Girsu; record of shearing of 82 sheep. 2. Late Sargonic (Year 2, month 11, day 20); from Umma; distribution of bread and beer; cancelled on both sides. 3. Late Sargonic (Year 2, month 10, day 51); from Urnma; distribution of bread and beer; cancelled on both sides. 4. Late Sargonic (Year 3, month 3, day 13); from Umma; distribution of bread and beer; cancelled on both sides. 5. Late Sargonic (Year 3, month 4, day 23); from Umma; distribution of bread and beer; cancelled on both sides. 6. Late Sargonic (Year 3, month 7, day 28); from Umma; distribution of bread and beer. 7. Late Sargonic (Year 3, month 11); from Umma; delivery of arrears in rations. 8. Early Sargonic (Year 4, month 27); from Umma; record of receipt of quantities of copper from various people at a place called KA-SA-bljm. 9. Late Sargonic (Year 5, month 3); from Umma; record of measurement of tracts of land assigned to various people; cancelled on both sides. 10. Late Sargonic (Year 5, month 5); from Umma; record of issue of various kinds of oil to people. o or detailed discussion of the Umma tablets, see B. R. Foster, Umma in the Sargonic Period, Proceedings of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences (in press). My special thanks go to Dr F. Taylor and Miss G. A. Matheson for permission to examine the tablets. I am grateful to A. Westenholz for checking my transliterations against his own. I owe to him several improved readings and corrections. In a few instances where I wavered between my reading and his, I have indicated his with W.
3 SARGONIC AND PRE-SARGONIC TABLETS Early Sargonic (Year 5, month 9, day 8?); from Umma; record of a clerk's weighing out copper to smiths. 12. Late Sargonic (Year 6, month 4); from Umma; record of assignment of plots of land to various people; cancelled on both sides. 13. Late Sargonic (Year 7, month 8); from Umma; record of producing a ploughman for a day's work seeding a plot of land. 14. Late Sargonic (Year [ l, month 1); from Umma; record of beer used in a regular offering (2) over a period of one month. 15. Same tablet as No Late Sargonic; provenance uncertain; record of daily use of beer and flour over a period of a month, the amounts converted into raw barley and emmer for accounting purposes. 17. Late Sargonic (Year [ l, month 77, day 27); from Umma; distribution of bread and beer. Note that the figures for bread do not check. 18. Late Sargonic; from Girsu or perhaps Umma; list of tracts of land held by i-fib- er. Note that the figures do not add up to the total. Is the discrepancy somehow covered by the notation PAP in lines 3, 5, 7, and g? 19. Post-Sargonic(?); provenance uncertain; list of non- Mesopotamian names subscribed 'people of BAD-D~-NIM~', not debited on the tablet of evening sacrifices'. The toponym in line 6 can be read as Dur-Dannulim or BAd-da-NIM ('Fortress-beside- Elam'); the second seems to me the more likely. 20. Late Sargonic; from Girsu?; list of barley amounts on hand in LagaS and kgud(or: am?)-me-me. 21. Late Sargonic; from Umma?; list of cattle. 22. Pre-Sargonic; provenance uncertain; legal document (7) apparently recording handing-over of barley, silver, garments, and livestock to various people, an oath (mu-bi) at a sanctuary (? kigal-la), and giving of a tablet. Unfortunately the unusual subscrip- tion is broken. 23. Late Sargonic (Year l?, month [ D; from Umma; record of arrears in delivery of grain harvest by chief ploughmen; column i cancelled. 24. Ur Ill account of labourers (line 6': LAL.NI 1 guru3 assigned to various people. The tablet is black and of a type well-known at Ur
4 460 THE JOHN RYLANDS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Ill Umma; for this reason I have not included it here. 25. Late Sargonic; from Umma; record of receipt 'when the man came for the barley of the major domo of the watchmen'. 26. Late? Sargonic; provenance uncertain; distribution of oil. 27. Late Sargonic; from Umma; list of plots of land assigned to various people; columns i, iii, and v are cancelled.
