1 A GAP THEOREM OF ELF-HRINKER arxv:11.608v1 [math.dg] 5 Dec 01 QING-MING CHENG AND GUOXIN WEI Abstract. In ths paper, we study complete self-shrnkers n Eucldean space and prove that an n-dmensonal complete self-shrnker wth polynomal volume growth n Eucldean space R n+1 s sometrc to ether R n, n ( n), or R n m m ( m), 1 m n 1, f the squared norm of the second fundamental form s constant and satsfes < Introducton Let X : M R n+1 be a smooth n-dmensonal mmersed hypersurface n the (n+1)-dmensonal Eucldean space R n+1. The mmersed hypersurface M s called a self-shrnker f t satsfes the quaslnear ellptc system: H = X N, where H denotes the mean curvature vector of M, X N denotes the orthogonal projecton of X onto the normal bundle of M. It t known that self-shrnkers play an mportant role n the study of the mean curvature flow because they descrbe all possble blow up at a gven sngularty of a mean curvature flow. For n = 1, Abresch and Langer [1] classfed all smooth closed self-shrnker curves n R and showed that the round crcle s the only embedded self-shrnkers. For n, Husken [9] studed compact self-shrnkers. He proved that f M s an n- dmensonal compact self-shrnker wth non-negatve mean curvature H n R n+1, then X(M) = n ( n). We should notce that the condton of non-negatve mean curvature s essental. In fact, let and denote the Laplacan and the gradent operator on the self-shrnker, respectvely and, denotes the standard nner product of R n+1. Because H X, H +H H = 0, we obtan H > 0 from the maxmum prncple f the mean curvature s non-negatve. Furthermore, Angenent [] has constructed compact embedded self-shrnker torus 1 n 1 n R n+1. Husken [10] and Coldng and Mncozz [5] have studed complete and noncompact self-shrnkers n R n+1. They have proved that f M s an n-dmensonal complete embedded self-shrnker n R n+1 wth H 0 and wth polynomal volume 001 Mathematcs ubject Classfcaton: 5C44, 5C4. 2 QING-MING CHENG AND GUOXIN WEI growth, then M s sometrc to ether the hyperplane R n, the round sphere n ( n), or a cylnder m ( m) R n m, 1 m n 1. Wthout the condton H 0, Le and esum [11] proved that f M s an n- dmensonal complete embedded self-shrnker wth polynomal volume growth and < 1nEucldean space R n+1, then = 0andM ssometrc tothe hyperplane R n, where denotes the squared norm of the second fundamental form. Furthermore, Cao and L [] have studed the general case. They have proved that f M s an n-dmensonal complete self-shrnker wth polynomal volume growth and 1 n Eucldean space R n+1, then M s sometrc to ether the hyperplane R n, the round sphere n ( n), or a cylnder m ( m) R n m, 1 m n 1. Recently, Dng and Xn [6] have studed the second gap on the squared norm of the second fundamental form and they have proved that f M s an n-dmensonal complete self-shrnker wth polynomal volume growth n Eucldean space R n+1, there exsts a postve number δ = 0.0 such that f , then = 1. Motvated by the above results of Le and esum, Cao and L, Dng and Xn, we consder the second gap for the squared norm of the second fundamental form and prove the followng classfcaton theorem for self-shrnkers: Theorem 1.1. Let M be an n-dmensonal complete self-shrnker wth polynomal volume growth n R n+1. If the squared norm of the second fundamental form s constant and satsfes 1+ 7, then M s sometrc to one of the followng: (1) the hyperplane R n, () a cylnder R n m m ( m), for 1 m n 1, () the round sphere n ( n).. Prelmnares In ths secton, we gve some notatons and formulas. Let X : M R n+1 be an n-dmensonal self-shrnker n R n+1. Let {e 1,,e n,e n+1 } be a local orthonormal bass along M wth dual coframe {ω 1,,ω n,ω n+1 }, such that {e 1,,e n } s a local orthonormal bass of M and e n+1 s normal to M. Then we have ω n+1 = 0, ω n+1 = n h j ω j, h j = h j, j=1 where h j denotes the component of the second fundamental form of M. H = n j=1 h jje n+1 s the mean curvature vector feld, H = H = n j=1 h jj s the mean curvature and II =,j h jω ω j e n+1 s the second fundamental form of M. The Gauss equatons and Codazz equatons are gven by (.1) R jkl = h k h jl h l h jk, (.) h jk = h kj,

Let k=1 k=1 k=1 F = F, F j = j F, h jk = k h j, and h jkl = l k h j, where j s the covarant dfferentaton operator, we have n n (.) h jkl h jlk = h m R mjkl + h mj R mkl. m=1 The followng ellptc operator L s ntroduced by Coldng and Mncozz n [5]: m=1 (.4) Lf = f < X, f >, where and denote the Laplacan and the gradent operator on the self-shrnker, respectvely and <, > denotes the standard nner product of R n+1. By a drect calculaton, we have (.5) Lh j = (1 )h j, LH = H(1 ), LX = X, L X = (n X ), (.6) 1 L = h jk +(1 ). If s constant, then we obtan from (.4) and (.6) (.7) = ( 1), h jk hence one has ether (.8) = 0, or = 1, or > 1. We can choose a local feld of orthonormal frames on M n such that, at the pont that we consder, { λ, f = j, h j = 0, f j. then = h j = λ,,j where λ s called the prncpal curvature of M. From (.1) and (.), we get (.9) h jj h jj = (λ λ j )λ λ j. By a drect calculaton, we obtan (.10) = ( 1)( )+(A B),,l h jkl where A = λ h jk, B = λ λ j h jk.
4 4 QING-MING CHENG AND GUOXIN WEI We defne two functons f and f 4 as follows: f = n j h jk h k = λ h j, f 4 = h j h jk h kl h l = then we have j=1,l n λ 4 j, Lemma.1. Let M be an n-dmensonal complete self-shrnker wthout boundary and wth polynomal volume growth n R n+1. Then (.11) Lf = (1 )f +6 λ h jk, j=1 (.1) Lf 4 = 4(1 )f 4 +4(A+B). Proof. We next consder two cases: Case 1: a( ) b( )α In ths case a( 10 ) α 1. nce λ b( 1,λ 10 ) are the maxmum and mnmum of the prncpal curvatures at any pont of M, we obtan, for any j, o we get and then λ j +λ 1 λ +λ 1, (λ 1 λ j )(λ 1 +λ j ) (λ 1 λ j )(λ 1 +λ ). λ j (λ 1 +λ )λ j λ 1 λ, f 4 (λ 1 +λ )f λ 1 λ, (4.44) f = f 4 f f +(λ 1 +λ )f λ 1 λ, (4.45) f (λ 1 λ ). 4 From (4.4) and (4.45), we have t ( ) (4.46) ( t 9 )(1 α)(λ 1 λ ) t +[a( 10 ) b( 10 )α](λ 1 λ ) t. 4 nce a( ) b( )α 0, usng λ λ λ 1 +λ, we see from (4.46) { ( t 9 )+ 1 a( 10 ) (4.47) [ + ( t 9 ) 1 b( ] } 10 ) α. nce (4.48) we have from (4.47) ( t 9 ) 1 b( 10 ) ( ) = > 0, (4.49) ( t 9 ) On the other hand, [ 1 a( ) ] 10 b( ). 10 a( ) 10 b( > 0.86, ) 10
20 0 QING-MING CHENG AND GUOXIN WEI then from (4.49), we see (4.50) ( t 9 )(1 0.86) ( ) 0.14 > , hence (4.51) > > 1.8 > Ths s mpossble. Case : a( ) b( )α > In ths case a( 10 ) > α 0. From Lemma. and (4.4), we obtan b( ) 10 (4.5) t ( ) ( t 9 )(1 α)(λ 1 λ ) t + ( t 9 )(1 α)(λ 1 λ ) t [ + a( 10 ) b( ] 10 )α (λ1 λ ) (λ λ 1 +λ 1 λ ) t. [ a( 10 ) b( ] 10 )α tf Puttng y = λ 1λ, we have 1 y = λ 1λ (4.5) that 1 λ 1 +λ 1, then we nfer from (4.5) ( t [ 9 )(1 α)(1+y) + a( 10 ) b( ] 10 )α (1+y)( y) {[ = ( t 9 )(1+y)+a( ] 10 )(1+y)y [ + ( t 9 )(1+y) b( ] } 10 )(1+y)y α. Defnng two functons ρ(y) and (y) by (4.54) ρ(y) = ( t 9 )(1+y)+a( 10 )(1+y)y, (4.55) (y) = ( t 9 )(1+y) b( 10 )(1+y)y.
21 nce n >, we have 1+y > 0, then (4.56) (4.57) By a drect calculaton, we obtan (4.58) t follows that A GAP THEOREM OF ELF-HRINKER 1 (y) = ( t 9 )(1+y) b( 10 )(1+y)y = (1+y) [ t 9 b( 10 )y] > (1+y) [ ] = (1+y) > 0. ρ(y) = ( t 9 )(1+y)+a( 10 )(1+y)y = (1+y)[ t 9 +a( 10 )y ] < (1+y)[ ] = (1+y) ( ) < 0. ρ (y) = ( t 9 )+a( 10 )[y +6y ] = [ t 9 +a( 10 )y +a( 10 )y ] < [ a( 10 ) < [ ] < 0, 1 (4.59) ρ(y) ρ( 1 ) = ( t 9 )+ 1 a( 10 ). From the above arguments, we have (ρ(y)+ (y)α) ( ( t 9 )+ 1 a( 10 )) (4.60) > ( ( 1) ) = > , then (4.61) > > 1.54 > It s a contradcton. Hence, we have t >, that s, > 10 f > 1. Ths completes the proof of 10 7 Theorem 1.1.
