arxv: v4 [math.ac] 20 Sep 2013 A SURVEY OF SOME RESULTS FOR MIXED MULTIPLICITIES Le Van Dnh and Nguyen Ten Manh Truong Th Hong Thanh Department of Mathematcs, Hano Natonal Unversty of Educaton 136 Xuan Thuy Street, Hano, Vetnam dnhlevands@gmal.com, manhnt79@gmal.com, thanhtth@hnue.edu.vn ABSTRACT: The paper proves that the superfcal sequences n [13, 15, 16, 25] are the weak-(fc)-sequences n [18]. Ths follows that [18, Theorem 3.4] of Vet n 2000 covers the results of Rsler and Tesser [13] n 1973; Trung [15, Theorem 3.4] n 2001; Trung and Verma [16, Theorem 1.4] n The paper unfed the results for mxed multplctes of deals n [13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 25]. 1. Introducton In past years, usng dfferent sequences, one expressed mxed multplctes n terms of the Hlbert-Samuel multplcty, for nstance, n the case of deals of dmenson 0, Rsler and Tesser [13] n 1973 showed that each mxed multplcty s the multplcty of an deal generated by a superfcal sequence. However, for the case of arbtrary deals, how to fnd mxed multplcty formulas, whch are analogous to Rsler-Tesser s formula n [13], was a challenge. And ths problem became an open queston of the mxed multplcty theory (see e.g. [8, 14]). Vet [18] n 2000 solved ths open problem [18, Theorem 3.4] va (FC)-sequences. Trung [15] n 2001 and Trung and Verma [16] n 2007 obtaned results that are smlar to the result of [18] wth the help of b-flter-regular sequences and (ε 1,...,ε m )-superfcal sequences, respectvely. Ths paper seems to account well for the mnmum of condtons of weak-(fc)-sequences that s used as a tool n transmutng mxed multplctes of deals nto the Hlbert-Samuel multplcty. Ths explans why the superfcal sequences n [13, 15, 16, 25] are weak-(fc)-sequences; and [18, Theorem 3.4] of Vet n 2000 covers the results of Rsler and Tesser [13] n 1973; Trung [15, Theorem 3.4] n 2001; Trung and Verma [16, Theorem 1.4] n Mathematcs Subject Classfcaton (2010): Prmary 13H15. Secondary 13C13; 13C15; 14C17; 13D40. Key words and phrases : Noetheran rng, mxed multplcty, superfcal sequence; weak-(fc)-sequence. 1
2 By studyng [15, 16, 18], we see that one can use Vet s results and method n [18] for [15, 16] wth replacng weak-(fc)-sequences by other sequences that are varant forms of weak-(fc)-sequences. In fact, ths paper shows that the superfcal sequences n [13, 15, 16, 25] are the weak-(fc)-sequences n [18]. Ths proves that [15, Theorem 3.4] of Trung n 2001 and [16, Theorem 1.4] of Trung and Verma n 2007 are only varants of [18, Theorem 3.4] of Vet n So the paper unfed the results for mxed multplctes of deals n [13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 25]. 2. Mxed Multplctes In ths secton, we ntroduce the noton of mxed multplctes of deals and recall some results for mxed multplctes n [18]. Let(A,m)beanoetheranlocalrngwthmaxmaldealmandthenfnteresdue feld k = A/m. Let M be a fntely generated A-module. Let J,I 1,...,I s be deals of A such that J s an m-prmary deal and I = I 1 I s s not contaned n AnnM. Set dmm/0 M : I = q. Then Vet [18, Proposton 3.1()] n 2000 (see [11, Proposton 3.1()]) proved that [ J n 0 I n 1 1 Is ns l M ] A J n 0+1 I n 1 1 Is nsm s a polynomal of degree q 1 for all large n 0,n 1,...,n s. The terms of total degree q 1 n ths polynomal have the form k 0 +k 1 +k s = q 1 e A (J [k0+1],i [k 1] 1,...,I s [ks] ;M) nk 0 0 n k 1 1 n ks s k 0!k 1! k s!. Then e A (J [k 0+1],I [k 1] 1,...,I [ks] s ;M) s called the mxed multplcty of M wth respect to deals J,I 1,...,I s of the type (k 0,k 1,...,k s ). And Vet [18, Lemma 3.2()] n 2000 (see [11, Lemma 3.2()]) showed that e A (J [k 0+1],I [0] 1,...,I[0] s ;M) = e A(J;M/0 M : I ). Remark 2.1. Trung and Verma [17] n 2010 called (see [17, Lemma 5.1]) that [18, Proposton 3.1() and Lemma 3.2()] are results of Trung [15] n 2001 n the case when s = 1, and are also results of Trung and Verma n 2007 (see [17, Theorem 8.1]). Moreover, Trung and Verma [16] n 2007 consdered [18, Proposton 3.1() and Lemma 3.2()] as Trung-Verma s results (see [16, Theorem 1.2]). Although [15, Lemma 3.1] of Trung n 2001 s a partcular case of [18, Proposton 3.1() and Lemma 3.2()] n 2000 but the author of [15] seemed to omt these results.
3 3. Superfcal Sequences Ths secton proves that the mentoned sequences n [13, 15, 16, 18, 25] are weak- (FC)-sequences. As an applcaton, we unfy the results that nterpreted mxed multplctes of deals as the Hlbert-Samuel multplcty n the above works. Now, we recall superfcal sequences whch were chosen n Rsler-Tesser s work [13] n 1973 (see e.g. [1, 6, 9, 12, 29]). Defnton 3.1. An element x I s called an I -superfcal element of M wth respect to (I 1,...,I s ) f there exsts a non-negatve nteger c such that (I n 1 : x) I n 1 1 I c = I n 1 1 for all n c and for all non-negatve ntegers n 1,...,n 1,n +1,...,n s. Next, we recall the followng sequence n [18] (see e.g. [2, 3, 5, 11, 19, 20, 21, 27]). Defnton 3.2[18]. LetM beafntelygenerateda-module. LetI 1,...,I s bedeals such that I = I 1 I s s not contaned n AnnM. An element x A s called a weak-(fc)- element of M wth respect to (I 1,...,I s ) f there exsts {1,...,s} such that x I and the followng condtons are satsfed: () x s an I-flter-regular element wth respect to M,.e., 0 M : x 0 M : I. () xm I 1 n1 I n +1 Is nsm = xi n1 I 1 n Is nsm for all n 1,...,n s 0. M Let x 1,...,x t be a sequence n A. For any 0 < t, set M = (x 1,...,x )M. Then x 1,...,x t s called a weak-(fc)-sequence of M wth respect to (I 1,...,I s ) f x +1 s a weak-(fc)-element of M wth respect to (I 1,...,I s ) for all = 0,...,t 1. Usng weak-(fc)-sequences, the author of [18] n 2000 characterzed mxed multplctes as the Hlbert-Samuel multplcty (see e.g. [3, 5, 11, 20, 21, 27]) by the followng theorem. Theorem 3.3 [18, Theorem 3.4]. Let M be a fntely generated A-module. Let J,I 1,...,I s bedealsof Awth J bengm-prmaryand I = I 1 I s AnnM. Then e A (J [k0+1],i [k 1] 1,...,I s [ks] ;M) 0 f and only f there exsts a weak-(fc)-sequence x 1,...,x m of M wth respect to (J,I 1,...,I s ) consstng of k 1 elements of I 1,..., k s elements of I s such that dmm/(x 1,...,x m )M : I = dmm/0 M : I m. In ths case, e A (J [k0+1],i [k 1] 1,...,I s [ks] ;M) = e ( M ) J,. (x 1,...,x m )M : I
4 ForanygradedalgebraS = n 1,...,n d 0 S (n 1,...,n d ),sets ++ = n 1,...,n d >0 S (n 1,...,n d ). Note 3.4: We recall sequences n [15, 16] as follows. () In the case of two deals, Trung n 2001 gave a result [15, Theorem 3.4] smlar to Theorem 3.3 va b-flter-regular sequences. Set F J (J,I 1 ;A) = J m I1 n and F J m+1 I1 n I1 (I 1,J;A) = J m I1 n J m I1 n+1. m,n 0 m,n 0 For any x I 1, denote by x and x the mages of x n I 1 /JI 1 and I 1 /I1, 2 respectvely. Let x 1,...,x t be a sequence n I 1. For any 1 < t, set A A = (x 1,...,x ) ;J = JA ;I 1 = I 1 A and x +1 sthemageofx +1 ni 1.Then Trung n [15] used a sequence x 1,...,x t n I 1 such that x 1 s an F J (J,I 1 ;A) ++ - flter-regular element and x 1 s an F I 1 (I 1,J;A) ++ -flter-regular element; x +1 s an F J (J,I 1 ;A) ++ -flter-regular element and x +1 s an F I1 (I 1,J ;A) ++ -flterregular element for all 1 < t [15]. () Trung and Verma n 2007 gave a verson [16, Theorem 1.4] of Theorem 3.3 wth the help of sequences whch they called (ε 1,...,ε m )-superfcal sequences. Set J n I n 1 1 Is ns T = J n+1 I n Is ns+1 n,n 1,...,n s 0 Recall that x s an -superfcal element for I 1,...,I s f x I and the mage x I of x n JI 1 I 1 I 2I s an T ++ -flter-regular element n T,.e., +1 I s (J n+1 I n I n s : x) J n I n 1 1 s = J n+1 I n s for all n,n 1,...,n s 0. And f ε 1,...,ε m s a non-decreasng sequence of ndces wth 1 ε s, then a sequence x 1,...,x m s an(ε 1,...,ε m )-superfcal sequence for I 1,...,I s f for all = 1,...,m, x s an ε -superfcal element for J,Ī1,...,Īs, where x, J,Ī1,...,Īs arethemagesofx,j,i 1,...,I s n respectvely [16]. A, (x 1,...,x 1 ) Remark 3.5. In the case of two deals J,I 1, Manh n [10, Note ()] proved that sequences n Note 3.4() are the sequences n Note 3.4() when s = 1. Indeed, t can be verfed that f x I 1 satsfes the condtons n Note 3.4(), then (J m+1 I1 n+2 : x) J m I1 n+1 = J m+1 I1 n+1 and (J m I1 n+2 : x) J m I1 n = Jm I1 n+1
5 for all m,n 0. Then for all m,n 0, we have (J m+1 I n+2 1 : x) J m I n 1 = (Jm+1 I n+2 1 : x) (J m I n+2 1 : x) J m I n 1 = (J m+1 I n+2 1 : x) J m I n+1 1 = J m+1 I n+1 1. Thus x s an superfcal element for J,I 1 as n Note 3.4(). Basng on [25, Remark 4.1], the authors of [25] constructed the followng sequences that yeld flter-regular sequences n I n 1 1 Is n n 1,...,n s 0 I n I n 2 2 Is n. Defnton 3.6 [25]. Let M be a fntely generated A-module. Let I,I 1,...,I s be deals such that I = I 1 I s s not contaned n AnnM. An element x A s called a superfcal element of (I 1,...,I s ) wth respect to I and M f there exsts {1,...,s} such that x I and () (II n 1 Is nsm : x) I n 1 1 Is nsm = IIn 1 1 I n Is nsm for all n 1,...,n s 0. () xm I 1 n1 I n +1 Is nsm = xi n1 I 1 n Is nsm for all n 1,...,n s 0. M Let x 1,...,x t be a sequence n A. For each 0 < t, set M = (x 1,...,x )M. Then x 1,...,x t s called a superfcal sequence of (I 1,...,I s ) wth respect to I and M f x +1 sasuperfcalelementof(i 1,...,I s )wthrespecttoiandm for = 0,...,t 1. The followng man theorem shows that these sequences and weak-(fc)-sequences are the same. Theorem 3.7. An element x I s a superfcal element of (I 1,...,I s ) wth respect to I = I 1 and M f and only f x s a weak-(fc)-element of M wth respect to (I 1,...,I s ). Proof. Note that the condton () n Defnton 3.2 and the condton () n Defnton 3.6 are the same: xm I 1 n1 I n +1 Is nsm = xi n1 I 1 n Is nsm for all n 1,...,n s 0. Moreover, we get, by ths equaton and snce I = I 1 that (I k I n 1 = ( (I k I n 1 : x) I n 1 1 xm) : x ) I n 1 1 = ( xi k I n 1 1 I n : x ) I n 1 1 = ( I k I n 1 1 I n +(0 M : x) ) I n 1 1 = I k I n 1 1 I n +(0 M : x) I n 1 1
6 for all k 1 and n 1,...,n s 0. Consequently (I k I n 1 : x) I n 1 1 = I k I n 1 1 I n +(0 M : x) I n 1 1 (1) for all k 1 and n 1,...,n s 0. Let x I be a superfcal element of (I 1,...,I s ) wth respect to I = I 1 and M as n Defnton 3.6. Then (II n 1 : x) I n 1 1 = II n 1 1 I n (2) for all n 1,...,n s 0. We show by nducton on k 1 that (I k I n 1 : x) I n 1 1 = Ik I n 1 1 I n (3) for all k 1 and n 1,...,n s 0. The case that k = 1, (3) s true by (2). Assume that (I k I n 1 for all n 1,...,n s 0. It holds that (I k+1 I n 1 = (I k+1 I n 1 = (I k+1 I n 1 = (II n 1+k = II n 1+k 1 I n Is ns M = I k+1 I n 1 1 I n Is ns M : x) I n 1 1 = Ik I n 1 1 I n : x) I n 1 1 : x) (I k I n 1 : x) I k I n 1 1 : x) I n 1+k 1 : x) I n 1 1 for all n 1,...,n s 0. Hence the nducton s complete and we get (3). Combnng (3) wth (1) we obtan I k I n 1 1 I n +(0 M : x) I n 1 1 = Ik I n 1 1 I n for all k 1 and n 1,...,n s 0. Therefore (0 M : x) I n 1 1 I k I n 1 1 I n for all k 1 and n 1,...,n s 0. Hence (0 M : x) I n 1 1 Is ns M I k I n 1 1 I n Is ns M = 0 k 1
7 for n 1,...,n s 0. Thus, x s an I-flter-regular element wth respect to M and hence x s a weak-(fc)-element of M wth respect to (I 1,...,I s ). Now, suppose that x I s a weak-(fc)-element of M wth respect to (I 1,...,I s ). Snce x s an I-flter-regular element wth respect to M, t follows that (0 M : x) I n 1 1 = 0 for all n 1,...,n s 0. Indeed, by Artn-Rees Lemma, there exst postve ntegers u 1,...,u s such that I n 1 1 Is nsm (0 M : I ) = I n 1 u 1 1 Is ns us [I u 1 1 Ius (0 M : I )] I n 1 u 1 1 Is ns us (0 M : I ) for all n 1 u 1,...,n s u s. Snce M s noetheran, there exsts a postve nteger u such that 0 M : I = 0 M : I u. Therefore I n 1 u 1 1 Is ns us (0 M : I ) = I n 1 u 1 1 Is ns us (0 M : I u ) = I n 1 u 1 1 Is ns us (0 M : I1 u Is) u = 0 for all n 1,...,n s 0. Remember that x s an I-flter-regular element wth respect to M, 0 M : x 0 M : I. Thus (0 M : x) I n 1 1 I n 1 1 (0 M : I ) = 0 for all n 1,...,n s 0. Hence (II n 1 : x) I n 1 1 = IIn 1 1 I n for all n 1,...,n s 0 by (1). Thus x satsfes the condton () n Defnton 3.6 and hence x s a superfcal element of (I 1,...,I s ) wth respect to I = I 1 and M. From the above facts, we obtan some followng comments. Remark 3.8. On the one hand, [25, Remark 4.3 and Remark 4.7] showed that the superfcalsequencesofm-prmarydealsndefnton3.1and(ε 1,...,ε m )-superfcal sequences n Note 3.4() are the superfcal sequences n Defnton 3.6. On the other hand, sequences n Note 3.4() are sequences n Note 3.4 () when s = 1 by Remark 3.5. Hence sequences of m-prmary deals n Defnton 3.1 and sequences n Note 3.4 are sequences n Defnton 3.6. But sequences n Defnton 3.6 and weak-(fc)- sequences n Defnton 3.2 are the same by Theorem 3.7. Hence the superfcal sequences n [13, 15, 16, 25] are weak-(fc)-sequences. From ths t follows that Theorem 3.3 [18, Theorem 3.4] n 2000 covers the results of Rsler and Tesser [13] n 1973; Trung [15, Theorem 3.4] n 2001(see [10]); Trung and Verma [16, Theorem 1.4] n 2007 (see [3, 5, 27]). Moreover, [25, Theorem 4.5] and [18, Theorem 3.4] are equvalent by Theorem 3.7.
8 Remark 3.9. Theorem 3.7 and [25, Remark 4.1] seem to account well for the mnmum of condtons of weak-(fc)-sequences that s used as a tool n nterpretng mxed multplctes of deals nto the Hlbert-Samuel multplcty. Ths explans why the superfcal sequences n [13, 15, 16, 25] are weak-(fc)-sequences. Note that weak-(fc)-sequences are also an useful tool to study the multplcty and the Cohen-Macaulayness of blow-up rngs (see e.g. [4, 22, 23, 24, 26, 28]). At ths pont we would lke to emphasze that: On the one hand the authors of [15, 16] used Vet s results and method n [18] for ther works wth replacng weak- (FC)-sequences by other sequences that they called flter-regular sequences. On the other hand one seemed to omt Vet s work. Ths causes confuson n ctatons, for nstance, J. Huh cted [18, Theorem 3.4] n 2000 as Trung-Verma s theorem n 2007 (see [7, Theorem 5]).
