4 Recognition over the next few years The importance of the deployment over the next few years of a constellation of advanced meteorological satellites in geostationary (Geo) orbit with their imaging capabilities by improved spectral, spatial and temporal resolution sensors, opens up a world of new possibilities for continuous monitoring of the high-temporal dynamics of the land, oceans and atmosphere. In this context, Japanese next generation Geostationary Meteorological Satellite, Himawari-8 is in operation since 7 July 2015

11 A Japan - Australia Collaboration The launch of collaborative project between Australia and Japan, namely CSIRO AuBoM and JAXA - JMA for the utilization of the combined data from Himawari-8/9 and coming GCOM-C as a cooperation on application development. Extracted key non-meteorological (environmental) products; - Land: Vegetation parameters, Fire spread (Hot Spot), Flood warning, Land surface temp. - Ocean: Ocean color, SST - Atmosphere: Solar radiation for solar power generation, Aerosol/Smoke(haze) for air quality monitoring (outcome from Japan Australia workshop on Non- Meteorological applications for Next Generation Geostationary Satellites: August 2015)
12 A Japan - Australia Collaboration It is addressing a broad range of societal challenges, particularly in combination with moderate resolution low Earth orbit (LEO) observing satellites, such as GCOM-C. More information at:
13 A Preliminary Result from Himawari-8/AHI in non-meteorological applications Extraction of Vegetation Parameters
14 Daily fluctuation of derived Vegetation Indices A preliminary from Himawari-8/AHI study, not in printed... NDVI The highter temporal/spacial resolution of observation from Geo will be feasible to extract the more precise vegetation indices on a mountain slope or a complex topography. Furthermore, a diurnal variation of vegetation indices will be a promising parameter for retrieving vegetation condition. 23 GEO/Advanced VIS&IR Imager and GEO/IR Hyperspectral Sounder will be realized by EUMETSAT MTG-I and MTG-S around then moving forward to produce a new synergy for the development of new nonmeteorological applications.
24 Integrated Advanced Imager & Hyperspectral Sounder Unit from GEO will be in scope by 2025 in the scope of Himawari-10/11?? - A flexible sounding observation from GEO will be produced in extracted clear-sky area by spot beam for retrieving vertical profile in significant area, such as atmospheric instability, or diagnosis of large model error. Further advanced GEO Constellation in scope after GEO/Microwave Imager and Sounder will be put into operation
25 Meteorological Satellite Operators, at least JMA, should take into account the existence of the users communities of Non-Meteorological Applications with having a further view to 2040s
26 Conclusion from Meteorological Satellite Operator New Users, excepting NMHSs, will be new Stakeholders? More flexible satellite baseline system will be constructed by taking into the behavior of non-meteorological application users toward 2040
