Mulidimensional quadraic and subquadraic BSDEs wih special srucure arxiv: v4 [mah.pr] 9 Jan 15 Parick Cheridio Princeon Universiy Princeon, NJ 8544, USA January 15 Absrac We sudy mulidimensional BSDEs of he form Y = ξ + f(s,y s,z s ds Z s dw s Kihun Nam Princeon Universiy Princeon, NJ 8544, USA wih bounded erminal condiions ξ and driversf ha grow a mos quadraically in Z s. We consider hree differen cases. In he firs one he BSDE is Markovian, and a soluion can be obained from a soluion o a relaed FBSDE. In he second case, he BSDE becomes a one-dimensional quadraic BSDE when projeced o a one-dimensional subspace, and a soluion can be derived from a soluion of he one-dimensional equaion. In he hird case, he growh of he driver f in Z s is sricly subquadraic, and he exisence and uniqueness of a soluion can be shown by firs solving he BSDE on a shor ime inerval and hen exending i recursively. Key words: Mulidimensional backward sochasic differenial equaions, forward-backward sochasic differenial equaions, quadraic BSDEs, projecable BSDEs, sricly subquadraic BSDEs. 1 Inroducion We sudy mulidimensional BSDEs of he form Y = ξ + f(s,y s,z s ds Z s dw s, (1.1 where Y akes values in R d, Z is R d n -valued and W is an n-dimensional Brownian moion. If he erminal condiion ξ is square-inegrable and he driver f(,y,z Lipschiz coninuous in 1
(y, z, he exisence of a unique soluion can be shown wih a Picard Lindelöf ieraion argumen, see e.g. Pardoux and Peng (199 or El Karoui e al. (1997. Kobylanski ( proved ha one-dimensional (d = 1 BSDEs wih drivers of quadraic growh in z have soluions if ξ is bounded. Moreover, if ξ has bounded Malliavin derivaive, he growh of f(s,y,z in z can be arbirary; see Cheridio and Nam (14. For mulidimensional BSDEs he siuaion is more complicaed because one canno use comparison resuls; see e.g. Hu and Peng (6. In fac, mulidimensional BSDEs wih drivers of quadraic growh in z do no always admi soluions even if he erminal condiion ξ is bounded; see Frei and dos Reis (11 for an example. An early resul for superlinear mulidimensional BSDEs was given by Bahlali e al. (1, which assumed ha he growh of f(s,y,z in z is of he order z log z. I was generalized by Bahlali e al. (1 o he case where f(s,y,z has sricly subquadraic growh in z and saisfies a monooniciy condiion. Tevzadze (8 gave an exisence and uniqueness resul for mulidimensional BSDEs wih general drivers of quadraic z-growh in he case where he erminal condiion has small L -norm. In his paper we pu resricions on he driver. Three differen cases are considered. In all hree we assume ξ o be bounded and use BMO-maringale heory ogeher wih Girsanov s heorem o consruc an equivalen probabiliy measure ha can be used o prove he exisence of a soluion. In Secion we assume he BSDE o be Markovian and relaed o an FBSDE of he form dp = G(,P,Q,R d+dw, P = dq = F(,P,Q,R d+r dw, Q T = h(p T (1. for a bounded funcion h. If he FBSDE has a soluion, we change he probabiliy measure o obain a soluion o a differen FBSDE, from which a soluion o he BSDE (1.1 can be derived. A similar approach was aken by Liang e al. (1 bu wihou proving ha he soluion is adaped o he filraion generaed by he Brownian moion driving he BSDE; ha is, hey showed he exisence of a weak soluion. Here, we prove he exisence of a srong soluion. There exis differen resuls in he lieraure guaraneeing he exisence of a soluion o (1.. We use one of Delarue ( o derive ha he BSDE (1.1 has a unique bounded soluion. Mania and Schweizer (5 and Ankirchner e al. (9 sudied he ransformaion of onedimensional quadraic BSDEs under a change of measure, bu no wih he aim of proving he exisence of a classical soluion. In Secion 3 condiions are given under which equaion (1.1 can be urned ino a one-dimensional quadraic BSDE by projecing i on a one-dimensional subspace of R d. Resuls of Kobylanski ( guaranee ha he one-dimensional equaion has a soluion. From here a soluion o he mulidimensional equaion can be obained by changing he probabiliy measure and solving a linear equaion. In Secion 4 he growh of f(s, y, z in z is assumed o be sricly subquadraic. This makes i possible o prove he exisence of a unique soluion on a shor ime inerval wih a conracion argumen. Under an addiional srucural assumpion, he soluion can be esimaed by aking condiional expecaion wih respec o
an equivalen probabiliy measure. Then he shor-ime soluion can be exended o a global soluion. Noaion: In he whole paper T R + is a finie ime horizon and (W T an n-dimensional Brownian moion on a probabiliy space (Ω,F,P. ByFwe denoe he augmened filraion (F generaed by W. The erminal condiion ξ is a bounded d-dimensional F T -measurable random vecor and he driver f : [,T] Ω R d R d n R d a P B(R d B(R d n -measurable mapping, where P denoes he predicable sigma-algebra and B(R d and B(R d n he Borel sigma-algebras on R d and R d n, respecively. As usual, we undersand equaliies and inequaliies beween random variables in he P-almos sure sense. Y,ξ and f are undersood as d 1-marices, W as an n 1-marix and Z as a d n-marix. By Z T we denoe he ranspose of Z and by he Euclidean norm. Tha is, for a vecor Y, Y := i Y i, and for a marix Z, Z = r(zz T. R + denoes he se of nonnegaive real numbers and. p he L p -norm. We need he following Banach spaces of sochasic processes: S p (R d : all d-dimensional coninuous adaped processes saisfying Y S p := sup Y < p T H p (R d n for p < : all R d n -valued predicable processes saisfying ( 1/ Z H p := Z s ds < p H (R d n : all R d n -valued predicable processes saisfying H BMO (R d n : all Z H (R d n saisfying Z H := esssup Z (ω < (,ω Z BMO := sup T E Z s ds 1/ <, where T denoes he se of all [,T]-valued sopping imes and E he condiional expecaion wih respec o F. 3
By S p [a,b] (Rd, H p [a,b] (Rd n and H BMO [a,b] (R d n we denoe he same spaces if he processes have ime indexes in [a,b]. For H H BMO (R n 1, HT s dw s is a BMO-maringale and ( E H := exp Hs T dw s 1 H s ds a maringale; see Kazamaki (1994. So one obains from Girsanov s heorem ha ET H P defines an equivalen probabiliy measure, under which W H sds is a Brownian moion. Moreover, every Z H BMO (R d n wih respec o P is also in H BMO (R d n wih respec o ET H P. Markovian quadraic BSDEs In his secion we consider BSDEs of he form Y = h(w T + {F(s,W s,y s,z s +Z s G(s,W s,y s,z s }ds Z s dw s (.1 for measurable funcions h : R n R d, F : [,T] R n R d R d n R d and G : [,T] R n R d R d n R n. The following heorem gives condiions under which (.1 has a soluion if here is a soluion o a relaed FBSDE. Theorem.1. Assume ha here exiss a consan C R + and a nondecreasing funcion ρ : R + R + such ha he following condiions hold: (A1 h(x C (A y T F(,x,y,z C y (1+ y + z for all (,x,y,z [,T] R n R d R d n (A3 G(,x,y,z ρ( y (1+ z for all (,y,z [,T] R d R d n (A4 The FBSDE dp = G(,P,Q,R d+dw, P = dq = F(,P,Q,R d+r dw, Q T = h(p T has a soluion(p,q,r H (R n S (R d H (R d n such haq = q(,p andr = r(,p for predicable funcions q : [,T] C([,T],R n R d and r : [,T] C([,T],R n R d n. Then (Y,Z = (q(,w,r(,w is a soluion of he BSDE (.1 in S (R d H BMO (R d n, and Z is bounded if R is bounded. 4
Proof. One obains from Iô s formula ha for every a R + and [,T]-valued sopping ime, e a Q = e at h(p T + e as( Q T sf(s,p s,q s,r s R s a Q s ds Since Q S (R d and R H (R d n, one has E Q T s R s ds E sup Q s R s ds Q S R H <. s T e as Q T sr s dw s. So i follows from he Burkholder Davis Gundy inequaliy ha sup T eas Q T sr s dw s is inegrable, implying ha he local maringale eas Q T sr s dw s is a rue maringale. Therefore, e a Q = E (e at h(p T + e as( Q T s F(s,P s,q s,r s R s a Q s ds. By assumpion (A, Q T s F(s,P s,q s,r s R s a Q s C Q s (1+ Q s + R s R s a Q s C +(C +C +1 a Q s 1 R s. So for a = C +C +1, one obains Q + 1 E E ( e at h(p T +C R s ds e a Q + 1 E e as R s ds e as ds C e at (1+T. In paricular, Q is in S (R d and R in H BMO (R d n. By assumpion (A3, one has G(s,P s,q s,r s ρ(c e at (1+T(1+ R s, from which i follows ha G(s,P s,q s,r s belongs o H BMO (R n 1. Therefore, P is a Brownian moion under he measure E G T P, and R is sill in H BMO (R d n under E G T P. The backward equaion in (A4 can be wrien as dq = (F(,P,Q,R +R G(,P,Q,R d+r dp, Q T = h(p T. Bu since Q = q(,p and R = r(,p, one has dq(,p = (F(,P,q(,P,r(,P+r(,PG(,P,q(,P,r(,Pd+r(,PdP. So (Y,Z = (q(,w,r(,w is in S (R d H BMO (R d n and saisfies dy = (F(,W,Y,Z +Z G(,W,Y,Z d+z dw, Y T = h(w T. Finally, if R is bounded, hen so is Z. 5
Remark.. Since he BSDE (.1 is Markovian, i is relaed o he semilinear parabolic PDE wih erminal condiion u + 1 u+f(,x,u, u+( ug(,x,u, u =, u(t,x = h(x. For example, if he PDE has a C 1, -soluion u : [,T] R n R d, i follows from Iô s formula ha (Y,Z = (u(,w, u(,w solves he BSDE (.1. Bu he sandard consrucion of a viscosiy soluion o he PDE from a BSDE soluion does no work because he necessary comparison resuls do no exend from he one- o he mulidimensional case; see Peng (1999. A crucial assumpion of Theorem.1 is (A4. There exis differen resuls in he FBSDE lieraure from which i follows. The following proposiion derives he exisence of a unique soluion o he quadraic BSDE (.1 from an FBSDE resul of Delarue (. Proposiion.3. Assume here exiss a consan C R + such ha for all,x,x,y,y,z,z he following hold: F(,x,y,z F(,x,y,z C( x x + y y + z z G(,x,y,z G(,x,y,z C( x x + y y + z z h(x h(x C x x F(,x,, + G(,x,, + h(x C. Then he BSDE (.1 has a unique soluion (Y,Z in S (R d H (R d n, and i is of he form Y = y(,w, Z = x y(,w, where y : [,T] R n R d is a coninuous funcion ha is uniformly Lipschiz in x R n and x denoes he weak derivaive wih respec o x in he Sobolev sense. Proof. I follows from he assumpions ha he condiions of Proposiion.4 and Theorem.6 of Delarue ( hold. Therefore, he FBSDE in (A4 of Theorem.1 has a unique soluion (P,Q,R in H (R n S (R d H (R d n such ha Q is of he form Q = q(,p for a bounded coninuous funcion q : [,T] R n R d which is uniformly Lipschiz in x R n. As a consequence, he process G = G(,P,Q,R is bounded, from which i follows ha E G T P defines a probabiliy measure equivalen o P, under which P is an F-adaped n-dimensional Brownian moion. I can be seen from he represenaion Q = q(,p = Q {F(s,P s,q s,r s +R s G(s,P s,q s,r s }ds+ R s dp s ha Q is a coninuous F-semimaringale. By Sricker s heorem, i is also a coninuous semimaringale wih respec o he filraion F P generaed by P. In paricular, i has a unique canonical (F P, P-semimaringale decomposiion Q = Q + M + A, where M is a coninuous 6
(F P, P-local maringale and A a finie variaion process wih M = A =. By he maringale represenaion heorem,m can be wrien asm = H sdp s for a uniquef P -predicable process H. Bu sincep is anf-brownian moion under P, Q = Q +M +A is also he unique canonical (F, P-semimaringale decomposiion of Q. I follows ha R = H, and herefore, R = r(,p for a predicable funcion r : [,T] C([,T],R n R d n. This shows ha (A4 holds. Since (A1 (A3 of Theorem.1 are saisfied as well, one obains ha (Y,Z = (q(,w,r(,w is a soluion of he BSDE (.1. Moreover, since q is coninuous and q(,p an Iô process, i follows from Theorem 1 of Chiashvili and Mania (1996 ha r(,p = x q(,p, where x q is a bounded weak derivaive of q wih respec o x in he Sobolev sense. This shows ha (q(,w, x q(,w is a soluion of (.1 in S (R d H (R d n. Now assume(ỹ, Z is anoher soluion of (.1 ins (R d H (R d n and lelbe a common bound for Y,Y,Z,Z. Then (Y,Z and (Y,Z are boh soluions of he modified BSDE where Y = h(w T + f(s,w s,π L (Y s,z s ds Z s dw s, f(,x,y,z := F(,x,y,z+zG(,x,y,z and π L (y,z := (min{1,l/ y }y,min{1,l/ z }z. Since his BSDE saisfies he condiions of Pardoux and Peng (199, i has a unique soluion in S (R d H (R d n, and i follows ha (Y,Z = (Ỹ, Z. Remark.4. The assumpions of Proposiion.3 can be slighly relaxed such ha he condiions of Theorem.6 of Delarue ( are sill me. Then he same argumens yield he exisence of a bounded soluion (Y,Z o he BSDE (.1. Uniqueness can be shown by using Pardoux (1999 insead of Pardoux and Peng (199. Alernaively, he assumpions of Proposiion.3 can be modified such ha hey imply some oher FBSDE resul, such as e.g., he one of Pardoux and Tang ( Projecable quadraic BSDEs Definiion 3.1. We call a mulidimensional BSDE projecable if is driver can be wrien as f(s,y,z = P(s,a T y,a T z+yq(s,a T y,a T z+zr(s,a T y,a T z (3.1 for a consan vecor a R d and predicable funcions P : [,T] Ω R R 1 n R d 1 Q : [,T] Ω R R 1 n R R : [,T] Ω R R 1 n R n 1. 7
A projecable BSDE becomes one-dimensional if projeced on he line generaed bya R d 1 : a T Y =a T ξ + a T Z s dw s. a T { P(s,a T Y s,a T Z s +Y s Q(s,a T Y s,a T Z s +Z s R(s,a T Y s,a T Z s } ds In he following heorem we consider a projecable BSDE under condiions ensuring ha he projeced BSDE has a soluion. This makes i possible o derive he exisence of a soluion o he mulidimensional BSDE. Theorem 3.. Consider a bounded erminal condiion ξ L (F T d and a driver f of he form (3.1 such ha P(s,u,v C(1+ u, Q(s,u,v C, R(s,u,v C +ρ( u v for a consan C R + and a nondecreasing funcion ρ : R + R +. Then he BSDE Y = ξ + f(s,y s,z s ds Z s dw s (3. has a soluion (Y,Z S (R d H BMO (R d n. Moreover, if F(s,u,v = a T P(s,u,v+uQ(s,u,v+vR(s,u,v saisfies F(s,u,v F(s,u,v C u u +C(1+ v v v v, (3.3 hen (3. has only one soluion (Y,Z in S (R d H BMO (R d n. Proof. By Theorem.3 of Kobylanski (, he one-dimensional BSDE U = a T ξ + F (s,u s,v s ds V s dw s (3.4 has a soluion (U,V S (R H (R 1 n. Therefore, here exiss a consan K such ha F(s,U s,v s K(1+ V s, and i follows like in he proof of Proposiion.1 in Briand and Elie (13 ha V is in H BMO (R 1 n. Denoe P s := P(s,U s,v s, Q s := Q(s,U s,v s, R s = R(s,U s,v s and assume he mulidimensional linear BSDE Y = ξ + (P s +Y s Q s +Z s R s ds Z s dw s (3.5 8
has a soluion (Y,Z S (R d H BMO (R d n. I follows from he assumpions ha R s C +ρ( U S V s. So R is in H BMO (R n 1, and P := ET R P is an equivalen probabiliy measure under which W = W R sds is a Brownian moion. Now one can wrie from which i follows ha Y = ξ + (P s +Y s Q s ds Z s d W s, (3.6 and herefore, e Qudu Y = e Qudu ξ + e Qsds Y = Ẽ [ s T e Qudu s P s ds e Qudu Z s d W s, e Qudu ξ + ] s e Qudu P s ds, (3.7 where Ẽ denoes expecaion wih respec o P. This uniquely deermines Y. Now Z is uniquely given by (3.6. To show ha (3.5 has a soluion in S (R d H BMO (R d n, one can define Y by (3.7, which is equivalen o ] Γ Y = E [Γ T ξ + Γ s P s ds, where Γ is he unique soluion of he SDE dγ = Γ (Q s ds+r T s dw s, Γ = 1. ThenY belongs os (R d, and by he maringale represenaion heorem, here exiss a unique predicable process Z such ha ΓZ belongs o H (R d n and [ ] Γ s (Y s Rs T +Z sdw s = Γ T ξ + Γ s P s ds E Γ T ξ + Γ s P s ds. [ Since Y = E Γ T ξ + ] T Γ sp s ds, one has Y + ] Γ s (Y s Rs T +Z s dw s = E [Γ T ξ + Γ s P s ds = Γ Y + Γ s P s ds. Therefore, hen one obains ( Y = Γ 1 Y + Γ s (Y s R T s +Z sdw s Γ s P s ds, dy = (P +Y Q +Z R d+z dw, Y T = ξ. 9
In paricular, (3.6 holds, from which i can be seen ha M = Z sd W s is a bounded Pmaringale. Since Ẽ Z s ds = Ẽ(M T M, his shows ha Z is in H BMO (R d n wih T respec o P and hence, also wih respec o P. So we have shown ha for a given soluion (U,V S (R H BMO (R 1 n of he one-dimensional BSDE (3.4, he linear BSDE (3.5 has a unique soluion (Y,Z S (R d H BMO (R d n. (a T Y,a T Z solves he one-dimensional linear BSDE Ũ = a T ξ + (a T P s +ŨsQ s +ṼsR s ds Ṽ s dw s, which, like (3.5, can be shown o have a unique soluion in S (R H BMO (R 1 n. I follows ha (a T Y,a T Z = (U,V, from which one obains ha (Y,Z solves he original BSDE (3.. If he addiional condiion (3.3 holds, one obains from Theorem.6 in Kobylanski ( ha he one-dimensional BSDE (3.4 admis only one soluion (U,V in S (R H BMO (R 1 n, and i follows ha (3. has a unique soluion (Y,Z in S (R d H BMO (R d n. 4 Subquadraic BSDEs In he case where he BSDE (1.1 is no Markovian or projecable, we assume he driverf(s,y,z o be of sricly subquadraic growh in z. For consans C,C i R +, ε (,1 and a nondecreasing funcion ρ : R + R +, consider he following condiions: (B1 ξ is a d-dimensional F T -measurable random vecor saisfying ξ C (B f(s,y,z C ( 1+ y +ρ( y z ε (B3 f(,y,z f(,y,z ρ( y y (B4 f(s,y,z = F(s,y,z+G(s,y,z and ( ( y y + 1+( z z 1 ε z z y T F(s,y,z C y (1+ y + z, y T G(s,y,z y T z ρ( y z. The main resul of his secion is he following Theorem 4.1. A BSDE Y = ξ + f(s,y s,z s ds Z s dw s (4.1 saisfying (B1 (B4 has a unique soluion (Y,Z in S (R d H BMO (R d n, and ( (C +1 Y (C +1exp (T. 1
We prove Theorem 4.1 by firs showing ha he BSDE (4.1 has a unique soluion for shor ime inervals and hen consrucing a soluion on [,T] recursively backwards in ime. For small h > we use Banach s fixed poin heorem o prove he exisence and uniqueness of a soluion on [T h,t]. For R R +, define { } B R := (Y,Z S [T h,t] (Rd H BMO [T h,t] (Rd n : Y S R, Z BMO[T h,t] R. [T h,t] Lemma 4.. Assume ha R 3C and (B1 (B3 hold. Then here exiss a consan δ > only depending on C, R and ρ(r such ha for all h (,δ], he BSDE (4.1 has a unique soluion (Y,Z B R on [T h,t]. Proof. In he whole proof we assume [T h,t] and rea ρ = ρ(r as a consan. This is possible because Y will urn ou o be bounded by R. For (y,z B R, define φ(y,z := (Y,Z, where Y = E (ξ + f(s,y s,z s ds, T h T, and Z is he unique R d n -valued predicable process saisfying Then T h Z s dw s = ξ + T h f(s,y s,z s ds E T h (ξ + T h Y C +E f(s,y s,z s ds, T h T, f(s,y s,z s ds. and if is a sopping ime wih values in [T h, T], i follows from (B and Hölder s inequaliy ha ( E f(s,y s,z s ds CE 1+ ys +ρ z s ε ds Ch (1+ y S +CρE [T h,t] Ch(1+R+Cρh ε/ R ε. Choose h > so small ha Ch(1+R+Cρh ε/ R ε C. Then z s ε ds Ch (1+ y S +Cρh ε/ z ε BMO [T h,t] [T h,t] E f(s,y s,z s ds C and Y S C R. [T h,t] On he oher hand, i follows from he definiion of (Y,Z ha Y = ξ + f(s,y s,z s ds Z s dw s, T h T. (4. 11
So one obains from Iô s formula, Y + Z s ds = ξ + Ys T f(s,y s,z s ds Ys T Z s dw s. Since(y,z S [T h,t] (Rd H BMO [T h,t] (Rd n, i follows from (B1 and (B haξ+ T h f(s,y s,z s ds isp-inegrable for somep > 1. By Doob s maximall p -inequaliy,sup T h T T h Z sdw s is also p-inegrable. So one obains from he Burkholder Davis Gundy inequaliy ha T h Y T s Z s ds is p/-inegrable and sup T h T T h Y T maringale T h Y T s Z sdw s is p-inegrable. This implies ha he local s Z sdw s is a rue maringale. Therefore, E Z s ds C + Y S E f(s,y s,z s ds 5C, [T h,t] which shows ha Z BMO[T h,t] 3C R. So φ maps B R ino iself. Nex, we show ha φ is a conracion on B R. Choose (y,z,(y,z B R and denoe (Y,Z = φ(y,z, (Y,Z = φ(y,z, y = y y, z = z z, Y = Y Y and Z = Z Z. Then, and by Iô s formula, Y + Y = Z s ds = I follows from (B3 ha E ( T f(s,ys,z s f(s,y s,z s ds Z s dw s, (4.3 Y T s f(s,ys,z s f(s,y s,z s ds E ρh y S [T h,t] +ρ E ρh y S +ρ (h+e [T h,t] ( f(s,ys,z s f(s,y s,z s ds Y T s Z s dw s. [T h,t] So for h > small enough, one has E f(s,ys,z s f(s,y s,z s 1 ds ( y 4 S + z BMO[T h,t] [T h,t] 1 ( y S z BMO[T h,t]. [T h,t] 1
Since T h Z sdw s and T h Y T s Z s dw s are maringales, one obains from (4.3, and from (4.4, Y S [T h,t] 1 ( y S [T h,t] z BMO[T h,t], Z BMO [T h,t] Y S supe f(s,ys,z s f(s,y [T h,t] s,z s ds 1 ( y S [T h,t] z BMO[T h,t]. This shows ha here exiss a δ > only depending on C, R and ρ(r such ha for h (,δ], φ is a conracion on B R, from which i follows ha on [T h,t], (4.1 has a unique soluion in B R. In he nex sep we show ha under he addiional condiion (B4, he soluion of Lemma 4. saisfies ( (C +1 Y (C +1exp (T. This allows us o consruc a soluion on he whole ime inerval [,T] recursively. Lemma 4.3. Assume (B1 and (B4 hold, and for some h >, he BSDE (4.1 has a soluion (Y,Z S [T h,t] (Rd H BMO [T h,t] (Rd n. Then for [T h,t]. ( (C +1 Y (C +1exp (T Proof.
