All solutions together with solution methods (explanatory statement) must be inserted in the labelled position on the solution sheets. Support your answer with diagrams, equations and examples when possible You can submit your exam after the first hour. Question 1 A : (6 marks) A wet soil sample has a total mass (m t = 2212 gm), air content (A% = 6%), volume of soil solids (v s = 729 cm 3 ), and a specific gravity (G s = 2.71). Find: a) Water content (w%). b) Degree of saturation (S%). c) Wet unit weight (ɣ wet in kn/m 3 ). Page 1 of 9

6 Question 4 A : (5 marks) Two samples of a silty clay soil were tested in consolidated undrained ( CU ) triaxial test. The following results were recorded at failure: Sample No. Cell Pressure (σ 3 ) in kn/m 2 Deviator stress (σ d ) in kn/m 2 Pore water pressure at failure (U f ) in kn/m Find : Shear strength parameters in terms of effective stress (C, ø ). 7 Question 4 B : (5 marks) A fully saturated normally consolidated clay (N.C.C.) soil was tested in an Unconfined Compression test and Unconsolidated Undrained (UU) test. Given that: C = 125 kn/m 2, C = 0, ø = 0, ø = 28 o. a) In the Unconfined Compression test, the sample failed at a deviator stress (σ d ) of (250 kn/m 2 ). Find the pore water pressure at failure (U f ). b) In the Unconsolidated Undrained (UU) test, the cell pressure (σ 3 ) at failure was (400 kn/ m 2 ). Find the deviator stress (σ d ) at failure.
